Aug 13 NBC Sports reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) suffered a separated shoulder during the preseason game Sunday, Aug. 13. However, his shoulder did slip back in to place. He is scheduled to undergo further evaluation Monday, Aug. 14. KFFL

Aug 13 Updating earlier reports, Portis suffered a partially dislocated left shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday night's game against the Bengals, the Redskins' official site reports.

Recommendation: Portis was taken into the locker room for X-rays and no fractures were found, but he underwent an MRI and the Redskins announced that he has a shoulder subluxation injury, meaning that he suffered a partial dislocation of a joint in the shoulder. The team's training staff was able to put the dislocated shoulder back into place. We'll continue to keep a close eye on this situation.

Hopefully Portis is okay. He didn't sound too happy when he was interviewed later. The Redskins need him considering they have no depth at RB.

yep he didn't sound too happy.

"After that 8-yard run, I was like, 'Get me out of that game,'" Portis said. "That's what I was thinking. It's football. It can happen to anyone. It happened to me."

Standard treatment involves rest and strengthening exercises. Portis had the left arm in a blue sling after the game, when he lobbied for regulars to play less in the preseason.

"For whoever's watching: Let's get rid of some of these games," Portis said. "Four games is ridiculous. Then you play a 16-game season and the playoffs behind that."

Gibbs planned to keep Portis and his other starters in the game for only a short time.

"We wanted to have one good drive," Gibbs said. "We didn't want him to carry the ball more than one or two times."

The Redskins have signed linebacker Jeff Posey, offensive lineman Spencer Folau and running back A.J. Harris, the team announced on Tuesday.

To make room for the three new players, the Redskins waived linebacker Chris Clemons, running back Kerry Carter and defensive back Ben Emanuel with injury settlements.

Clemons and Carter both suffered serious knee ligament injuries in last Sunday's preseason opener against Cincinnati. Clemons would have been sidelined 4-6 weeks and Carter would have been forced to miss the entire season.

Posey, 6-4 and 241 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran who began his career with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 1997.

Posey spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills under current Redskins cornerbacks coach and former Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray.

Regarded as a strong, hold-the-point-of-attack linebacker, Posey served as the starting strong-side linebacker for the Bills the last three seasons. He was playing at the weak-side linebacker position until the Bills released him on Aug. 7, 2006.

Posey, who played his college ball at Southern Mississippi, has appeared in 123 games with 76 starts and totaled 357 tackles (221 solo), 20.5 sacks, two interceptions and eight forced fumbles.

In 2005, Posey appeared in 16 games with 15 starts for the Bills and recorded 68 tackles (47 solo), three sacks and eight pressures.
