Chiefs banged up, Houston plus 1 favorte for saturday

Hey all, since I live in KC I thought I would give some info from the local media. I didnt write it all down so no quotes or links(sorry) but the jist of it is, KC is really banged up going into saturday with about 13 guys injured. I saw about 6 starters listed mainly o-line/d-line. ty law sat out yesterdays practice also. day to day I believe. The KC Star has Houston listed as the +1 favorite for the game. Herm Edwards has been a little upset with the offense, I guess they are so used to scoring, they are having trouble with ball/clock control style that edwards is known for. Kinda ironic I think, they are switching from agressive to conservative, we are switching from conservative to agressive. Just thought I would give my input from KC. should be fun game to watch.

Links are always good... but thanks for the heads-up.

With Al Saunders gone and their 2 starting tackles gone, I would expect a lot less from the KC offense this season. Too bad for everyone that took Larry Johnson first in their fantasy draft.

uh-oh...I haven't made it to a point in my Texans fanatic career where I feel good about being favored in a game. ;)

It should be a good game. Although preseason wins can be fool's gold, I think players are still trying to win the game along with proving themselves to secure a position on the team.

I'm still in surreal mode that the season is upon us. It probably won't hit me until I grab my hardhat and jersey and head off to the game.

According to the Vegas book I have seen, KC is -1. In other words, they are the favorite by 1 point.

A + means you are an underdog, not a favorite.

Setting odds on preseason games is silly. Betting on them is outright idiotic.

A line is a line, if you think its off, you should bet it no matter what time of season it is. Betting is all about making money, nothing more. There has been some huge action to move the Stl v Indy line 3 points, are the bettors who jammed enough cash down to move the line idiots, or are they taking advantage of a financial opportunity based on a weak line?

Because preseason is preseason. Most teams don't play to win, they are throwing in players to look at them. You might as well just get some friends together and start flipping coins. BTW, who is favored in coin flipping? Heads or Tails?

I always call tails myself.

I think you guys have this backwards. A + sign means you are an underdog. That means you are getting points before the game starts.

The Texans are +1 against the Chiefs. From a betting perspective, the score before the game is Texans 1 and Chiefs 0. If there is no scoring in the game and you bet the Texans, you win the bet.

I don't bet anymore but I am pretty certain I am right and you guys have this backwards.

The Texans are underdogs for this game!!!!

Betting on preseason games are dicey and it least know which way you are betting.

Actually, since the head of the coin is usually has more weight shifted to it, the coin will land on it slightly more (like a tenth or hundredth of a percent). You always call Tails - take an edge when you can!

Unless Jerry Glanville is coaching. He seemed to confuse the preseason with the playoffs.

I have no Idea, I just know we were listed in the favorite collumn and +1 in the O column, pick in the C collumn and 36 1/2 in the O/U collumn. I dont bet sports, so I usually just see who is favorite and who is underdog. I just threw in the info coupled with the multiple injuries to let you all know what to expect. they had to sign another QB because both of their backups are injured. I didnt think I was gonna cause this much turmoil lol

At chiefscoalition I picked up a virus called exp_txtrange.a
Hey guys, I was ummm, well I was trolling and I found this post. So I thought I'd register and let you all know that the virus thing has been fixed. Actually what happened was the home page got hacked and all the menus redirected to a site that tried to load a trojan virus. Although it has been fixed, the exploit is still there leaving the door open for it to happen again. The forums were not harmed, and for peace of mind I can provide a link for the forums. We really like visitors from the opposing team to come and talk football. As long as it isn't just a bunch of smack. So here is an open invite to all of you to come over and talk some football. Here's to a great injury free game. Oh yeah, my prediction:
Chiefs 20
Texans 17
LJ is going to bust loose on the very first play for a 40+ yrd run!!! See ya all over at Chiefs Coalition. Here's the link so you can bypass the homepage.

As do we. From a Chief fans point of view, is your O-line hurting? What's the word on H. Edwards as head coach? How's the D going to look? I agree on the injury free game. Good luck
Texans 32
Chiefs 17

The oline isn't really that banged up. Brian Waters is the only starter out on the O-lone. Turley is a starter, but he had to compete and earn that spot. Jared Allen goes up against him in camp, and has nothing but good things to say about him. The players are responding well to Herm. His practices are alot shorter than Vermiels were. That was one of the complaints the veterns had was DV practiced way to long.Reports out of camp say that the D is dominating the offense. Hope that means the D has improved and not that the offense has declined. Larry still shows that awesome burst that he had last season. The 2 rookie safetys are close to unseating the starters of Welsey and Knight. So look for them to have a big night. Remember these names Bernard Pollard and Jarred Page. Those are the rookie safetys that seem to always be involved in every play. Like your team there is so many question marks. I'm optimistic like every year. But, as a long time Chiefs fan I will remain a little pesimistic until I've seen them perform. We here every year how great the D is looking just to be dissappointed during the regular season.
GO CHIEFS!!!

It's matter of perspective, betting on any game is a questionable endeavor actually. I'm not a gambler but like anything there is a knack to it. Even pre season games are more than just a flip of the coin, there are tendencies to consider, some coaches play to win the 2nd or 3rd game, some the 4th some, don't put much emphasis on it at all. Injuries, the fact that a normally strong team isn't going to want to show it's play book, Knowing these tendencies and the forewarning of how long the starters will play makes it as bettable as any other game which as I said before is still a questionable decision.

I feel the same about the Texans. Although I feel that we are much improved on paper. I'm still weary about the O-line and the amount of time it might take our team to adhere to the teachings of our new coach. I will take note of the two players mentioned. I want you to look for a guy that goes by the name of Mario Williams:mario: and let me know how he looks.:ok:

All I know about the line is my five hundred looked pretty danged good @ the 6:43 mark. Then Bush went to the pine and 'ol biscuit got stuffed. The only sure thing is there are no sure things.

Yep think the chefs are gonna run us out of the park. They could line up Paula Dean behind that banged up line and she'd look good.

Thanks for the update. Thought at the inseption the Edwards deal was oil & water. We'lll see.
Got one of the best young runners in the game and you're gonna pack the box ? Might work out. We'll see.

That's not going to be a problem. Turley said he would rather play at that weight. He might have trouble on occasion with somebody bull rushing him but also at his lesser weight he is going to be able to keep up with speed rushers alot better.

I've always liked Turley. I hope he's able to make a full comeback. I'm not sure I'd be throwing him to the dogs so soon though. Are the Chiefs linemen that banged up? I kinda hope they line Mario up against him. That'll be a true test for Turley, huh? I suppose if he could handle his speed and bull-rush he'd be good to go. Even though I'm a true Texan and Texan fan, I'm still going to watch for Turley and hope he does well.:shades:

He's been going up against Jared Allen during training camp. I'd say that's a pretty good test. He rarely gets beat by Allen.

OK, well I wish him luck. As for the score of the game, Texans 32 Chiefs 17:tease:

As I will be looking for Mario Williams to do well. I hope it doesn't happen this game, but I would love for Williams to prove that the Texans made the right choice in picking him over Bush.

Link on Turley's progress:

Kansas City Star

One measure of the early success of Kyle Turley’s comeback is that he’s looking forward to playing against this year’s overall No. 1 draft pick, Houston’s Mario Williams.

There’s no better sign for the Chiefs that Turley, more than two years removed from playing his last game, is ready to face a premier talent like Williams in Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Texans in Houston.

So far, so good for Turley in his attempt to return from two years of back troubles and fill the space at left tackle that became empty for the Chiefs when Willie Roaf retired.

Turley won’t face Williams on Saturday night unless the rookie, who’s playing the left side himself, flips sides.

Whether he sees Williams, merely playing in the game is a big step for Turley, who hasn’t played since a playoff game for the Rams following the 2003 season.

“It’s on track,” Turley said. “I won’t be completely content until the season is over with and I’ve played all 16 games and then some, hopefully.”

Turley appeared tentative in his first few practices, as if he didn’t trust his back to hold up. But that hasn’t been a problem in recent practices.

“He’s a little rusty because he hasn’t played football for a little while,” offensive coordinator Mike Solari said. “The key thing for him is to learn our system and what we need to do as far as techniques and blocking schemes. That’s where the uncertainty comes in. When you’re not sure what to do, you look hesitant coming off the ball.”

Turley said: “I haven’t played football in two years, so there was some rust to knock off. Learning a new system doesn’t help. There are a lot of plays to learn, and a lot of them sound the same. So I was going through not just the physical part of it, but also the mental part of it.”

His back, meanwhile, seemingly has held up well. Turley has been given a few practices off, but that’s no different from many of the Chiefs’ veterans.

He turned down at least one offer to rest on another day. That’s another positive sign for Turley.

“I’ve trained hard,” he said. “I’ve taken a couple of practices off, but I’ve practiced a lot more than that, so I’m pleased with that part of it.”

The Chiefs were most impressed with Turley’s play against another former No. 1 draft pick, Minnesota’s Erasmus James, when they practiced against the Vikings last week.

But practice is conducted at a certain speed, far below that of a game. That’s what makes the game in Houston a big step for Turley.

“It’s a game situation, so that’s good,” he said. “Minnesota was a practice. The game takes a different mentality. Everything is a little bit faster. People will be moving around much quicker.

“I don’t feel I would need any more work than what is normal in the preseason. The preseason is just what it always has been for me, I hope. I’m not going to be content until I’ve started 16 games for this team, finished out this season and played every down.

“I don’t want to waste any snaps. That wouldn’t be wise. These games don’t really count. There have been times in my career when we went undefeated in the preseason and then 3-13 during the season.”

Weight continues to be an issue for Turley, who lost several pounds as he battled his back issues. He said he’s up to about 280 pounds, which is still light for an offensive tackle.

By comparison, Roaf is 320 pounds. Right tackle Kevin Sampson is 312.
