Flipping through my new issue of ESPN the Mag. I found this little fact about our new coach that I did not know.

"In 21 NFL seasons as a player and a coach with the Broncos and 49ers Gary Kubiak has been on just two losing teams(1990 broncos, 1999 broncos).Now he's running a Texans franchise that has not won more than seven games in any of its first four seasons.Something's gotta give in Houston-Most likely, Kubiak's winning ways." ESPN the Mag. Aug 14 2006 pg.94

Don't know if this info. has come out in other post but thought it was realy a great fact in that we all, as Texan fans, want a winning tradition in Houston.

So here are my Questions:
1. Will Kubiak be able to teach winning or is it something else, i.e. luck, hap-in-stance, or personal drive that has allowed coach Kubs to assist in this streak of winning?
Don't get me wrong I understand he has only been apart of winning teams.
2.Can/Will he be able to keep it going here in Houston?
 
I think winning can come from an attitude. Kubes will get this team believing it can win and that is half the battle. I think the perception among fans is that under Capers this team had the attitude of not going out to lose a game. This will change with the new coaching staff.

I think once it begins it will continue as long as the staff stays in place. It's impossible to predict or even believe that they will be in the playoffs every year, but I would be surprised if they aren't in the hunt each year.
 
It seems to me winning follows him. Not the other way around. From everything I have seen the last 7 months, he will have this team winning very soon. I am almost starting to believe he can turn Carr around. And after last year I did not think that would every be possible.

I think some of his success has been luck and some of it hard work and the right attitude. Regardless, I think Carr has been seriously undercoached and "coddled" (in a way--while also putting up with horrible pass blocking and receivers that can't catch) and that a really good, head-coaching caliber ex-QB coach is exactly what this team needed. It's not often that a player admits to being "coddled", especially when they have been sacked so much and much of the public wants (or wanted) them fired. Some people are just luckier than others and I doubt that I'll change my mind about that, but Kubiak is one of those who takes advantage of any luck that comes his way and makes it a bigger positive, as opposed to those who are just taking whatever's easy.

I think that he has the majority of these players chomping at the bit wanting to get on that field and play some football. Very few, if any, just want their paycheck, or feel like it's a lost cause (team-winning wise). They seem to have gone from, "Can we not embarrass ourselves anymore?" to "Just wait and see what we do!" with their general attitudes. I can't wait to see it myself.
 
:offtopic: I read somewhere that Aikman and crew credited Norv Turner for their development ..however Jimmy Johnson wanted Pendry for OC.. some reason Pendry couldn't do it at the time..

Troy Aikman lavished praise on Turner during his HOF induction speech yesterday. IMO, winning is 10% attitude and 90% hard work and preperation. Surrounding yourself with talented individuals is also a must, which makes Kubes' resume very impressive. Winners want him around and he's been an asset everywhere he's been.

Yep and Jimmy Johnson also credits Casserly with Norv Turner's failure in Washington. And Capers did well with a guy by the name of Bill Polian ( who is now doing well with the Colts )

I could fill in the rest, but you might get upset... so I will leave it there.

Norv Turner has been a failure everywhere he has been the head coach. Like Capers, he is a better coordinator than coach.

Well... everyone has a different way of counting failure I guess. I don't count coaches that made it into the playoffs as a complete poof.

Turner made it after Casserly got the boot. That Raider team he got tangled up with was in aweful shape. Looking at his record there he had 3 losing seasons 2 winning ... and was 7-6 before getting fired.

So it wasn't a case of not being good in Washington, it was a case of not being good enough. Schottenheimer and Spurrier couldn't top his 99 season.

EDIT: Actually I think Casserly was still on board in the playoff year.. I am not sure. I just know Cooke died and then Snyder took over around 1999. I bet there are plenty of stories floating around about it too.

The guys out there are grown men though. They know they have to get the job done. It's Kubiak and his assistant's job to teach them the schemes and such, but the players know that they have to execute. I don't know if they can "teach" winning though. The coaches coach, the players play. It's up to the coaches though to make sure the players do the jobs correctly, and if they do, they start winning.

It's too early to tell if he can keep it going in Houston. After the season is over and we can evaluate it, then we'll see. If Carr makes amazing progress and the offense and defense both improve, then yes he probably can.

do you really believe winning cant be taught? what makes a winning team then? great players? if thats the case then all you need is money to get great players.

I dissagree, I believe the coaches ESSENTIAL job is to teach winning. or rather teach their players to PLAY like winners.


If you play like a winner you will believe you can win, if you can get your whole team to play like winners you WILL be
 
I think Kubes will be a winner in Houston. He has the attitude to make players want to perform at their best. "Put out or get out"!!

Kubes has had years of coaching experience at the NFL level. Maybe not HC experience, but being involved with a NFL team during these years.

Look at Nick Saban. I feel he did a decent job at Miami with what he had to work with, coming out of college ball.

Look what Kubiak landed into, a rat-tat Texans team. Look what personnel changes he made in the first couple of months. He will surround himself with quality players. Not the first year but will be a winner in years to come.

I think Carr is just as good as Plummer. DD will be the deciding factor this year. You have got to get the pressure off the Oline and the QB. This is what works at Denver.

Honestly, I think Carr will be better than Plummer, but not any time real soon. That doesn't mean I won't give up on him if he doesn't show some serious improvement this year, but I expect that he will.
