Texans | D. Davis given full medical clearance, should be ready Week 1

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports Houston Texans RB Domanick Davis (knee) has been given full medical clearance by doctors to resume normal activities. He is expected to be ready for Week 1.

Hervoyel statement below about Boselli is not factual. The NFL Network did not launch until 11/2003. Adam Schefter was a sports writer in Denver in 2002 and 2003. He was named Colorado Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2002 and 2003.

Funny how things seem to change so quickly. I hope it is correct and he doesn't suffer any other setback by coming back too early.

...I don't care about the report, his knee is not 100%

See, I know a lot of things have changed around here but when I see the kinds of things I've seen happen over the past few weeks with Domanick Davis and then I see a press release like the one quoted here I tend to see the following (red because I see it that way, alarms go off if you get my drift):

Maybe I just need a little more time to restore my trust that what I'm hearing about injuries from this organization is even close to what's really going on.

I agree, when I read the original post my stomach turned a bit...:hide:

Before I post this there are 7 posts in this thread. Excluding the two by the original poster that leaves 5. Four of those are concerned that this "clearance" isn't worth the time it took to put it up on KFFL.com and I'd describe Zep as sounding pleasantly surprised and cautiously optimistic.

Yeah that Boselli experience didn't have any lasting repurcussions on the way the fans think.

Add that to the fact that DD is still having pain in that knee and having to rest for two days at a time I do not see how he was medically cleared.

Read the part that i made massive. Unless he went to Dr. Nick from the Simpsons, I doubt any doctor would put their reputation on the line and give him full clearance for the hell of it. Injuries take time to heal, lets all just be patient, relax, and have faith in our new coaching staff.

capers would describe it like this:

"well if it was during the season, he would be able to go. we are just holding him out from contact as a precaution"

i understand some injuries you just have to play through when its the regular season, but this is a chronic problem DD is having and i doubt there is an end in sight. hopefully morency, smith, and taylor can show us something good

I'll second that. It's a shame, because this is how the story of all-too-short careers begin.

I hope we (the ones thinking it's over) are all wrong. He was such a surprise and always did such a great job. He carried the load on a really bad offense, and put up some good numbers.

MAN! I REALLY hope he bounces back! He deserves to be part of a good offense.

Isn't this an example on why you don't give running backs long contracts with huge signing bonuses?

This is his whole article: link

In the past week, Texans running back Domanick Davis has undergone an MRI on his knee and gone to see a specialist in Charlotte. His worries have matched those of Texans' fans, whose team bypassed running back Reggie Bush in the April draft.

Yet both can relax. Davis' checkups turned out to be fine, and the running back was told that there is nothing wrong with the knee that underwent surgery during the offseason. He is on pace to return from the injury and experiencing nothing that isn't out of the ordinary for a running back recovering from offseason knee surgery. Soreness is to be expected.

Now the Texans can continue developing a cautious schedule by which to bring back Davis, and the running back can begin mentally preparing for the season ahead. Doctors have given him the mental peace and physical clearance he wanted and needed.

Unless his pain somehow magically disappeared after seeing the doctor I'm not buying it. Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, I would like to see him get another opinion or two. And if DD's knee was deemed fine by the doctor, why put him on a "cautious" schedule?

Exactly.

This is obviously one of those "If we say it, then it will come true" situations where nobody wants to admit that (A) The surgery wasn't as successful as it should have been or was hoped to be, and/or (B) DD needs to get more surgery or seriously rehabilitate the knee on a better timeframe than the one that forces him to be ready by week 1.

All of this is just wishful thinking on the behalf of many people who are entrusted to make decisions that SHOULD be based on the best interests of a player's longterm career....not for what's best RIGHT NOW.

I just don't get it. Why the gamble?

Soreness and draining fluid off the knee after low-level practices are two different things, isn't it?

I sprained or hyper-extended my big toe in a softball game a week ago. It took me almost the entire week to be "ready" for the next game. I took precautions, making sure my wife mowed the lawn and did all the heavy work for me, and I was able to stay off the foot enough, and stay away from potentially harmful activity which might re-aggrevate it, to allow it to heal. It was SORE and that was to be expected. But I didn't have swelling and I didn't have to drain it with a needle.

DD's knee is not just sore, it has massive amounts of fluid on it/in it that requires it to be drained.

Look, I'm not attempting to be a pessimist here. I would loooooove for DD to be ready. But what's being said by the all the sources, and what we're seeing are two different things IMO. Period.

And I didn't say everything was hunky dory--just that asking why he needed to be on a cautious schedule when he is 100% was ignoring half the story--that according to that doc he is 100% on schedule, not 100% right now.

I didn't realize that not being able to practice due to knee swelling and pain and waiting for him to practice on Monday equated to 'medical clearance" for next week. Funny how much spin goes on with the teams and media.

I'm sure that Hervoyel will respond on his own. But the way I was reading his post is: The "link" and text in red were simply made up as a fictitious example of team "feed" and/or media coverage in general, and how it works. I took the word "organization" refers to the Texans, NOT the NFL Network..........in other words, garbage in, garbage out........I could be wrong.

No one questioned the faith of the coaching staff... everyone is questioning the validity of the dr. that cleared him to practice.

That was a hell of a 1 day turnaround... I trust the player in a lot of cases, if he said he knee was hurting and he couldn't practice, then you know what? I think there is a problem with his knee.

And for the record, Dr. Nick attended the Hollywood Upstairs Medical College and claims to be "just as good as Dr. Hibbert." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Nick_Riviera

I can't seem to get around the fact that CARSON PALMER is ahead of DD. The dude had his knee shredded and is way ahead of schedule. DD had a little ole 'scope job done and can't practice. Something fishy going on. I liked CND's synopsis of the bone bruise theory. Sounds very likely, if not encouraging.

It's less of an urge to stick a tombstone on a guy, and more of someone like me...a fan who really wants to see DD healed and TRULY 100%...desiring to see a Texans organization sit DD out and do the right thing, rather than trainers or doctors or Texans management or an agent or even DD himself playing the spin game and trying to "wish" DD back into good health with official statements that say he will be ready in a month when he's had EIGHT months to heal and cannot run through low-level practices without getting fluid drained off his knee.

Not wishing him to fail. Just a fan wanting to see a guy get fully healed. I'd rather have him next year than to have him wreck his whole career.

I hope you are kidding, I was never "Pro-Bush" and never wanted us to draft him. And yes he is experiencing problems out of the oridnary as far as a knee scope goes. He hasn't been able to practice consistently since last November. He had his knee scoped in December. Carson Palmer had an ACL tear, MCL tear, cartilage and meniscus damage, and a dislocated knee cap, and had reconstructive surgery AFTER DD had his knee scoped. Palmer has been in camp for a month and played in a scrimmage yesterday and has had no problems while DD is still having pain and swelling in his knee and has not been able to practice at full speed yet. You are going to sit here and tell me DD is on schedule? My 82 year old grandma had 2 knee replacements earlier in the year and was fully recovered after two months with no problems as of yet. I had a knee scope in high school for cartilage damage and a meniscus tear and was playing football again 6 weeks later. If you honestly think DD is "on schedule" 8 months after having his knee scoped I don't know what to tell you...

Yeah, quarterbacks never have to move...

Carson Palmer went 4-for-9 for 57 yards and a touchdown pass in Cincinnati's scrimmage on Friday night, his first action under game conditions since tearing up his knee in the playoffs. Palmer showed the mobility to move around the pocket and outside of it when necessary. His longest completion was 37 yards to wide receiver Chris Henry. Palmer's touchdown pass was a 6-yard throw to Tab Perry.

ok, heres how it works, the doctor has to determine if the knee's structure is sound and can withstand the stress of a normal workout/practice, it does not mean that the knee wont hurt or swell, or that is 100 % NORMAL, just that there is no unrepaired damage that will endanger the knee to undue risk. someone with a totally healthy knee can stress the joint in practice that causes swelling and pain. I do think though that DD will have a tough season, and possibly a tough carreer dealing with future Knee problems. that doesnt mean he cant play footbal, Kubiak is a very smart man, read between the lines of his comments, he doesnt think DD will or should carry the full load this year or possibly ever. so what, we are talking about denver style running, when did denver ever rely on soley 1 runningback?

FWIW - I had arthroscopic knee surgery. The Dr. said he would be in and out in 30-45 minutes. He said I would be up walking the next day and back to normal in a few months. The operation took 1hr and 45 minutes, doc said it was a lot worse than the xrays showed. Back to normal took 8-10 months. There was discomfort and soreness for a long period. The knee has been good for the last 20 years, was running 6 miles a day but the extent of my athleticism today is a 3 mile walk or a round of golf.

Since you are comparing the two players, from ESPN regarding CarsonPalmer:
And, he will eventually find out what happens the first time he gets taken down. That will be a major test -- one he wasn't quite ready for on Saturday.

"I'm confident running with it and planting and cutting," he said. "But as far as getting hit, having to run full-speed and stop in a small area, I'm not mentally ready for that. And I don't think my knee's ready for that. There's no point in me testing it and seeing exactly what I can and can't do."
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=2533858

the demands on a QB and a RB are totally different and a quarterback may be able to play on a knee that a running back would never be able to play on.

As far as your Grandma is concerned, I'm glad she is fully recovered.....if Davis can't go this season and our other RB's don't work out - what kind of contract do you think she'd want to sign with us?

Mentally ready, even if his knee isn't ready, he played in a scrimmage last night and I have not heard of him having any problems with it, and even if Palmer was sidelined right now because of the knee it woudln't surprise me, some thought that injury ended his career.

Still a runningback playing on a healing knee, and a QB playing on a healing knee, are totally different....

Just because Palmer is doing it, doesn't mean that Jamal Anderson and Terrell Davis should still be playing....

I'm not that worried about DD. While I certainly hope he heals and makes an impact for us, I don't see him as such an important part of our offense that we'll fail without his services. I believe in Coach Kubiak's offensive philosophy - molded after Denver - who can produce a consistent running game by establishing a solid o-line and teaching running backs how to produce in this system with sound fundamental techniques.
