Gaffney getting better
Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports last week, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said he liked what he'd seen of WR Jabar Gaffney, and then added, "He's got to get used to our tempo and our pace." Asked Tuesday, Aug. 1, how Gaffney was doing with that adjustment, Reid said: "He's working his tail off. It's new for him; it's new for all the guys that come in. It's a little bit of a different pace than what they're accustomed to, but they're working to compete and play fast and practice fast. And Jabar is getting better." Gaffney said that while the current Lehigh weather might be a lot like Houston's, the workouts here are not. "It's definitely an adjustment. Everything here is full speed. Even walkthrough is full speed," Gaffney said. "It's all about timing. Practice is always up-tempo, no matter what we're doing." Gaffney has gotten a lot of work in the slot at training camp.

Very interesting to see that it would seem that as a player, the Texans probably were not pushed as hard under Capers, which speaks to the track record of younger players not fulfilling their potential in the past.

Anyone have any insight into the tempo of the TC practices this year vs. past years?

Well not to cross swords, but what else can he say ? Be interesting as we get closer to the cream in the cut downs, if Philly bites on someone. I believe that will speak volumns on Jabar. Reggie Brown is reported to have a hammie the other day...we'll see. This is the first year I went to TC . Can't help there. But I believe one of the anointed three mentioned it in a Bulllpen thread.

I saw some Eagles games last season and was impressed with Reggie Brown's continued improvement that year. I expect him to have an AJ circa 2004 type of year.

KC Wilson.....I had a chance to review not only the "snippet" of the article from KFFL.com, but actually the whole article (linked below). Essentially it seems that Gaffney is struggling to become their 3rd receiver and basically in the slot where he played a good deal of the time in Houston.

So far - and the Eagles haven't even played a preseason game yet; it only seems as if they've been at Lehigh forever - Gaffney hasn't shown much more than solid, unremarkable No. 3 receiver chops. The biggest headlines he's made came last week, when his June 20 arrest on a charge of possessing a handgun in New Jersey that he'd registered in Texas became a 1-day whirlwind story. And that was mostly because unsigned No. 1 pick Brodrick Bunkley was at first wrongly identified by a Web site as the Eagle who was charged.

That is an interesting and insightful take, and its consistant with the remarks
made by Jeb Putzier about his thoughts of the Texans practice and tempo that he observed in the past couple years when he visited during inter-squad TC sessions while he was still with the Broncos.

I've had jgl35 giving me his eye witness accounts of Eagles practice...as he has for years, and I must say he has a fine eye for talent and football in general....and he would probably disagree with the unremarkable Gaffney camp since he has told me Gaffney has been having a nice camp. Why do people knock Gaff because he is a fine slot guy? Beats me.....but Gaffney was at the WR1 when Brown was out and told me he looked good.

The thing about camp reports is (not speaking to the article)...not eveyone knows what they are looking at (hate to say it but it's just so true). I tend to trust a few people here since they have a history of astute observations....jgl35 is one of them on the Eagles side of things for me.

I certainly wish him well.

Good Lord, Vinny. That is a lot for me to live up to. Thank you for the kind words.
As to Gaffney.

First off, this is the Philly press. Look for something negitive to throw in there. Note the remark about the gun charge. Has nothing to do with football. These guys really miss Owens, the only ones who do.
My take on the article is that Gaffney has not done anything spectacle in camp. This is true. But to me, anyway, that does not mean that Gaffney is having a bad camp or will not help the Eagles.
From what I saw of Gaffney, I see a guy in a new system who has seemed to pick it up quickly with few mental mistakes.
When Gaffney does make mistakes, he learns from them and improves to make himself better. He does not look to me as to be fighting to get things down.
He didn't have a drop the times I watched him, and he gets open a lot.
A friend, who goes to camp much more that I do remarked to me that he felt McNabb was not looking for Gaffney enought. But since he or I are not pro scouts, take that for what it is worth.
Will Gaffney become a pro bowl receiver? No. But will he help the Eagles? I beleive so. He with be the guy who keeps the drives moving and catches the ball over the middle for first downs.
This is what I mean by saying Gaffney is having a good camp and is what I told Vinny.

I always thought that Gaffney was a solid receiver, especially in the slot and was a great fit in Philadelphia. They have had problems with receivers going over the middle and making catches, Gaffney can help them in that department, he's solid. He wasn't exactly given a great chance to succeed here being the 3rd option on a team where the QB can't make it past his 1st read.
