Texans 2006: The bad news and the good news

They just put up this latest fanblog post: Link

The last post was asking for everyone's predictions. And this post is my prediction (which I don't really care about), but is really an excuse to do a season preview. Lots of links. Some that have been posted here, some not, but sorta organized so that you can find them.

Might be a nice one to forward to your friends that don't MB but want to know a summary of where we are.

Football dangit. Let's talk football. :redtowel:

So, you've read blink. Good book, no?

Actually, I haven't read Blink or Tipping Point, but they are way high on my list of things to read. I've read a lot of reviews of those books and read Malcolm Gladwell's blog because it's interesting and well written.

Hey TC, always enjoy to see what you have to say.

I also think the Texans will be about 7-9 this year. Playing against the NFC East will be difficult as all 4 teams in that division are tough.

I am highly optimistic about this season. Last year things started bad and just snowballed from there. But people can not forget that this franchise was on the verge of an 8-8 season in 2004 then came the lackluster effort to end that season. Perhaps that was a sign of things to come for 2005.

More than any other off-season the Texans have made significant upgrades. Getting a guy like Moulds will help tremendously as will Putzier who I'm sure is an immediate asset knowing the offense so well. I am also optimistic about the O-line after getting Flanagan from the Packers not to mention Sherman to coach the line plus drafting a couple of young guys.

On defense I still think the secondary is weak however a good pass rush will help to cover up the deficiency. I am very excited about the Texans drafting Mario Williams. Certainly it was not the sexy or easy pick, but he is a guy who should be able to create havoc. Add in guys like Babin and Peek(if he can keep himself under control) and you have D-linemen who can ge to the QB. It seemed the last two years Dunta Robinson had more hits on the QB than anyone on the D-line.

My other prediction is that the Texans finish in 2nd place this year. Titans will be terrible and Jags are overrated.

Well, that's my two cents. I have my Mario Williams jersey, will shortly have my season tickets then it's just wait for the season to start.

Colts are the overrated team! :stirpot: I'm not going to get into that arguement on here as that would belong to a thread of a different topic.

Great blog TC, it shows both sides of how you could view this season.

I agree that the Colts are also overrated but no one else in this division is ready to overtake them. Only way they do not win this division in my opinion is if Manning gets hurt, which has happened virtually never in his career.

Manning's not going to have the excellent pass-blocking of James. Colts are going to have to run a spread offense this season, so I expect a lot of teams to send the house after Manning. My prediction- Colts at least 8 wins, 10 at the most.

I reserve my final prediction when the preseason ends, but as it stands now, the Texans are good for 4 to 5 wins next season.

I break it down like this:

The First Six Games - These teams have talent to make a run for the playoffs. Further, all of these teams will be looking at their schedule and the Texans as taking care of business to complete their playoff run. As it stands now, all of these teams have better talent, experience, and argueably better coaching staffs. To go a step further, the opener is huge against Philadelpia. If they win that game, look for them to possibly go 3-3 in that stretch. If they lose to the Eagles, look for the Texans to maybe win 2 games in the first six. Right now, my call is they go 1 - 5 in the first six games, beating either Miami or Jacksonville.

Games 7 through 13 - The schedule lightens up against opponents, but they have 5 of 7 on the road in this stretch. If there is really anyway they are going to go 8 - 8 this year or better, this is the strecth where they have to make it happen. Games they have a shot at winning are Tennessee (actually, they play them twice in this stretch because they are a divisional opponent), Buffalo, Jets, and Oakland. That is 5 games they could knock down as W's, but keep in mind 3 of those games are on the road. Right now, my call is 3 - 4 on this seven game stretch.

Games 14 through 16 - Here is crunch time. Go into the teeth of the Patriots in December and then have Indy and Cleveland at home to close out the season. Right now, my call is 1-2 in this stretch. However, I think the game against Indy at home will be a good one and I have some feeling the Texans will be playing well enough at that point in the season to beat them. Since it is just a feeling, I am not giving them a W though for this analysis. Basically, they beat the Browns to wrap up the season in this stretch.

Here is the breakdown,

First stretch 1 - 5
Second stretch 3 - 4
Third stretch 1 - 2

Record 5 - 11

As I said earlier, the Philadelphia game is huge to start the season off if they want to sniff around 8-8 for the season. I don't see them beating Indy in week 2 and at best splitting between Miami and Washington. Same with Dallas and Jacksonville. This team has never won more than 2 games in a row and I really don't see that changing this season.

Bottom line, the first six games will be a guide to the entire season. If they can get through that stretch at 3 - 3 (or even better), they will be sitting pretty for a really good push to show they are competitive in the NFL.

The pessimist in me thinks they could easily go 0 - 6 on the first six games.

There you go, rip me a new one.

Very nice TC. As always great post.

Not bad and fairly likely. I think they snag one more that isn't much expected and go 6-10.
What he said. Very nice job Doug in Kingwood. Upset Philly, get the guys to buying into the system all things are possible. All the changes, that opening schedule,Killa. Kubes gets the club to 4-2, Oh My ! Might happen. He gets this team sniffing the playoffs by december, COY no boubt. Nobody & I mean nobody outside this board is making that call. I believe 5-11 is pretty close.
