Is Demeco the man or what?....

Byshop

Practice Squad
Sup peeps, lemme ask a question here, only cause I didn't watch much college ball last year. How good is Ryans? We took him with our second pick after Mario. Does that mean he was drafted as a starter?....and if so, just how good is he? What are his strengths which made him draftable so high?

In other words, is he "the man" as a linebacker or what?

I am waiting for the same answer myself. I have no idea who Ryans is. All the scouting reports I read stated that he was an average athlete with average speed and would not be a game changer type player.

In my opinion for the first pick in the second round you better be.

I just hope he is not another Gafney.

Lucky pointed out elsewhere how careful you have to be with scouting reports. My theory is a lot of them are copied from one site to another. Ryans was consistantly described as an average athlete while AJ Hawk was lauded to the moon--interesting in light of the fact that all their testing was very similar. For example one site described Ryans as not having great speed and AJ as having more than enough speed--Ryans ran a 4.69, AJ a 4.65.

Ryans is a very smart guy with academic honors who was described by his coach as a coach on the field. He takes good angles, has good instincts and plays IMO with a joy for making the play. Where he will break into the line-up and when is certainly up for debate but he looks like a great pick who will eventually make an impact IMO.

There's something to be said, especially at the linebacker position, for football instincts. Apparantly this guys cup overrunneth with football instincts.

That's awesome. With D.Rob in our secondary and Mario up front, I hope Ryans becomes the leader in the middle. He's got the smarts to understand systems and make adjustments. We'll just have to wait and see if he's got the skills.

He cant be at too bad, didn't he get an award for his D in the SEC? If he can hold up with LSU, FSU, Miami, at least he has a good idea of what NFL can be like.

Prediction: around halfway point i see our Linebacking crew as: Greenwood, Cowart, Ryans.

I beleive his intelligence is what we really need in the middle. I really like the idea of a young smart guy like that taking over at MLB and leading our defense in the huddle.

FSU and Miami are ACC....

You mean if he can hold up with LSU, Auburn, and Georgia.

They are. No different than a local paper picking up an article off of a wire service.

He is someone that I feel so good about that I am tempted to get a custom jersey with his name on it. The more I read about him, the more I like him.

Here's some linkys:

This link needs some patriotic music in the background.

This link kinda says meh a little bit to claim that DeMeco is unathletic stuff

My friends from Alabama adore DeMeco.

Yea, I've noticed the same thing with scouting reports.

It's his name. It makes people think you are fast with a name like AJ Hawk. It's like racing and screaming birds of prey.

While DeMeco Ryans sounds like some beater Eastern block car with a slow fat Buddy Ryan at the wheel.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/9326200 is a great link, thanks. Look at Cromartie's jumping ability. Thats almost rediculous.

"The Man" was the SEC defensive player of the year! When you're considered the best defender on the best Defense in the nation, it can't reflect too badly on you.

I ordered my first Texans Jersey since before we even had players today. I'm getting a Battle Red Mario jersey, but I was sorely tempted to get one of DeMeco as well. Both of them have the makings of Pro-Bowl caliber players, and I expect DeMeco to be 1st on the depth chart come the season opener. :yahoo:

Wow. i never noticed how close he was to AJ on so many different physical aspects. 1" shorter vert., a half-step slower 40, and 1 rep weaker. So little seprated by 28 picks. now i understand why Kieper and other post-draft guys are complementing the Texans on this choice. I'm starting to warm up to him real quick-like.

Thanks a ton for all the responses and especially for the links. I have a much better understanding of him and the potential of the Texans defense now. :yahoo:

uh isn't it LeRoy Jordan?

What's up with that in Bama anyway? It's like DeMeco not Demeco... LeRoy not Leroy. I have seen Demarco so many times that I thought that was his real name and DeMeco was the mistake.

EDIT:

or maybe not... I just checked Alabama's site and they have him listed as Leroy. Yet the old Hall of Fame sites list him as LeRoy or Lee Roy. I bet it's Lee Roy...

Thanks for the capitalization lesson....

Yes it's DeMeco and LeRoy. The main purpose of my response is that he is a stud, not how he or I spell his freaking name.

Absolutely ! And I guarantee you Bama, we are thrilled and feel very fortunate to have him here in Houston. Many felt he'd be long gone before the second round rolled around.
And thanks for your post with his very impressive bio.
Now let me ask you, which LB position do you feel he's best suited to play ?
The thinking here seems to be he'd be most effective as an OLB on the weakside. What do you think ?
According to the bio you posted, looks like he played on the strongside his junior year ? I guess I thought he played weakside and in the middle while in
college at Alabama, but didn't know he played on the strongside ?

I actually opened this thread specifically to ask this question. I always figured he would play MLB or SLB, but I keep reading on this board that he is a WLB. Is that just because he isn't 250 lbs? I'm not worried about his weight. He isn't really all that small now and should easily be in the 240s in a couple of years. From what I've picked up about his game, he seems like he plays best going downhill rather than operating in space. Isn't that more of a SLB type?

I pegged him as our future MLB the nanosecond after we drafted him...and I still think he ends up there.

BT, we need a link for that cutnpaste btw....thanks for the info otherwise.

Even though DeMeco didn't knock out great 40 times, I think his measureables in general were really very impressive which documented his strong athletic skills. And as far as his production goes, just take a look at the info supplied by the poster from Alabama for a history of his performance. So this guy unquestionably is an outstanding playmaker worthy of being a first round pick. But lucky for us, he was still there in two.
Usually the top LB playmakers go on the weakside in 4-3 Ds.
I'm hoping we'll hear back from Bama to get his thoughts about DeMeco's
best position to play, given his extensive knowledge about DeMeco's
career at Alabama.

Look man, I am actually trying to help you out a little. I wouldn't have bothered if you were from Florida or Tennessee. We are talking about DeMeco Ryans.

Example:
A lot of people around here think this guy is just like Earl Campball.

If you open up like that, it looks like you don't really know what you are talking about. It's one thing if it's a typo, it's another if you cannot even spell the man's name right.

What does that say then? Maybe these people that are saying DeMeco is like Leroy Jordan don't even know who Lee Roy Jordan is. They have probably never seen Lee Roy Jordan play a single down. So how in the heck can I believe that their comparison is anything of substance?

( and it's not you that I am talking about... I saw the same things on Alabama news releases too )

I watch a ton of SEC football and he was a dynamic will backer but I think he is a 3 down mlb in the NFL. I think that Cowart is a short yardage and running down linebacker at this point in his career and I don't see anyone else who can play in the middle credibly. I can't see Morlon playing at the Sam and he isn't suited for the middle, so that puts DeMeco in the middle at the end of the day. I liken his game to the style of play Jon Vilma brings - smooth, athletic and instinctive. I think Cowart is going to struggle to make the team frankly.

I like the sounds of that. If we got a backer thats comparable to Vilma,
we definitely done good with our second round pick in '06.

Now let me ask you, which LB position do you feel he's best suited to play? At Alabama, he seemed a more natural fit at OLB. I'm not up to speed on the LB's at Houston like the rest of you, but he can slide into MLB if there is a need.

The thinking here seems to be he'd be most effective as an OLB on the weakside. What do you think? He has great hands, good coverage skills and excels at putting pressure on the QB.

According to the bio you posted, looks like he played on the strongside his junior year ? I guess I thought he played weakside and in the middle while in
college at Alabama, but didn't know he played on the strongside? They should have just listed him as an LB. He played wherever he was needed due to graduation or injuries. The guy at strongside that year, Cornelius Worntham with Seattle, injured his elbow and had to sit out that year. Another start left the team due to personal reasons. He filled in for Derrick Pope (Dolphins) and Freddie Roach (Pats) as well during hsi 4 years.

To summarize, I think he would make an outstanding OLB, but he will fill in nicely at MLB if needed.

I seem to remember hearing that AJ Hawk ran a 4.39 in one of his 40's. Now that is extremely fast for a linebacker. That would be why he has "more than enough" speed compared to Demeco.

I remember holding my breath when, the commish walk to the microphone & then announced DeMeco. I kicked, yelled and held my breath to turn blue and put on a fine old tantrum. Then the next round we got the two tackles and I started feeling better. And then I started collecting more info on Ryans... whooee! Man, we got a player in the second. I think it is highly possible all 4 of our first picks could be starters sometime in '06.

although probably a hair slower.i think he has better instincts, more leadership, and just general football saavy than odell thurmann out of georgia last year. he had a very nice rookie season for the bengals last year at SLB. i would like to see him start from week 1 if he has a nice TC and preseason.on another note i liked what i saw out of wali rainer the couple years he was at CLE. think he'll make the team or better yet ,beat out maybe cowart?just curious.

Me too, I was thrilled that Winston dropped to #33, then pissed that we didn't take him, then thrilled that he fell to #65, pissed that we didn't take him there even though Spencer is a good acquisition as well, then quickly very pleased when we took Winston at #66.
