Wong Time To Return?

CloakNNNdagger

Hall of Fame
Here's a name that hasn't surfaced for a while. If he does get back for TC (big if, even though he "hopes" to return then) or for that matter at all, what position will he fill? Wong could be big positive in the locker room, but all of this is mute if he cannot come back and come back strong.:

Wong will try to come back from knee injury

EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene native Kailee Wong has had a long, productive career in the NFL.
The former North Eugene High school star has played defense for the Minnesota Vikings and the Houston Texans.
But last season against Seattle, Wong seriously injured his knee. Now, he's trying to come back from the injury, after eight months and two surgeries.
He told the Eugene Register-Guard that he hopes to return for active duty when the NFL training camps begin later this month.
But Houston has a new coaching staff, and there are no guarantees for Wong.
Wong has 639 career tackles, six interceptions and 21 passes defended in his NFL career.

You should know more than anyone about his prognosis. A patella tendon tear and repair in mid-October '05 followed by several weeks of immobilization and then the ACL repair in January, which typically is 9 months minimum to recover if you're superman....

Hope is the operative word here. I like Kailee but I don't hold out too much of it for him, at least in the early part of the season if they decide they want to carry his cap number at all.

I didnt realize the severity of the injury until recently. I think we will definantely keep him, when he's in shape is a smart player.

I think this is fair. Stuff I have heard is that he is still limping a little but is muscled up pretty good. (What happens when you have time to lift but can't do a lot of cardio). He is well liked in the locker room and gets along with a lot of different groups of players.

Isn't Wong more expensive cap wise to cut this year than to keep?--about $3.1 mil to keep for the year and $4+ to cut?

They can split it over two years.

Haven't seen the limp. I've seen a wrap and some llight jogging like nothing was wrong. But it's those multi-directional plants and cuts that are the beech.

This is my understanding. But I cannot recall how the bonus was pushed out in 2008 and 2009.

Ya, especially at Linebacker.

Also, just hitting people, be it blockers or running backs, takes alot out on the knee. Considering you are supposed to drive through the people you tackle.

It counts 4 more years at $1.2 per.

They can take his $3 point whatever roster hit this year or cut him and take about a $2.4 dead hit this year and another $2.4 next year.

Interesting lanquage there TC. When you say "different groups of players",
I dunno....but somehow I don't think you mean groups of players like by position (WRs,OLs,TEs, etc.) or a group of starters vs a group of reserves.

I thought he would be a June 1st casualty and since he made that date I strongly feel we will keep him.

I think he'll stay, but either way since he has been injured I don't think they can release him. Anyone have a better understanding of the rules on cutting injured players?

I can't claim to be very knowledgable about IR either. If Wong is put on IR, what are the rules to return to the active roster?

Even if he can't play the 1'st half of the season, I would really like to see him on the sidelines next to DeMeco and some of the other rookies offering advice. IMHO he has always seemed like a smart and classy guy, I think he does have a lot of value for other reasons than smacking people around on the field.

Quick question? Is D. Ryans 6 "3" 236 like it states on the roster or is he more like 6 "1" 236 like it said on his Combine measurements?

A player can be placed on the waiver/injury list. If a team picks him off waivers they have him and the original team is carries its normal cap ramifications for a waiver. If the player is not claimed, the team and the player have 5 days to reach an injury settlement (not sure how this affects the cap). If no settlement is reached the player goes on the original team's injured reserve list and misses the entire season (there is no return from the IR list as opposed to the PUP list). That's the best I can recall.

DeMeco is 6'1"--the Texans have a typo.

Most likely the PUP list for Wong.

I think this is Highly Likely .... But if Wong is to play for this team again , its probably as a MLB . His best seasons in Minnesota were at that position .:twocents:

I don't think that he will have the agility or quickness he would need to play outside linebacker...I think he will definitely be playing middle...And i think he will definitely be back this season...This is 2006...almost 2007....Medical technology has come so far and now days players bounce back from injury almost to there full form...Look at McGahee and how vicious his injury was...or even look at alstott with his neck injury...a few years ago, injuries that severe would have ended players careers...

MLB is a possibility, I'm just worried he won't have the lower body strength you need to play in the middle after this injury.

I don't really think that is much of a concern... I think playing middle would be easier because on if he played the outside he would have to work more in space...and it would probably be harder for him to make plays at the outside position...

On Wong: IMO he's a great character guy in the locker room and a solid veteran LB on the field. My hunch is this year he's put on PuP-IR and shelved till next year when they dump Morlon Greenwood and any other LB's who dont pan out this year. My hunch is since it looks to be a contract year next year for Wong he would have a chance of getting healthy/fully rehabing this year and probably making the squad as good veteran depth while teaching DeMeco next year.

Going by his website he says he's 6'2 - 236
http://www.demecoryans.net/dr/content/view/13/27/

IMO he kind of splits the difference. Most places ive seen have him at 6'1-1/4 to 6'2 flatfooted. Meaning he's 6'3 with shoes on.

Whats funny is his info is all over the place and different.

Rivals- recruited height is stated as 6'2 - 212
http://alabama.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=4765

Then you have CBS - 6'1 - 229
http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/420098/rss

One Espn college page says 6'2 - 232
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/gamelog?playerId=136377

Yet another ESPN page says 6'1-1/4 - 236
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft....go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?id=9307

Draft Countdown - 6'1-1/4 - 236
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/olb/demecoryans.html

etc etc...

My consensus is he's around 6'2 and is 6'3 with cleates on.

Wong is signed thru 2009.

Bah - not so good on the caps & contracts info - Thanks CaK. I was kinda hoping it wasnt 2 more years.

So do you know if he's an RFA next year and a UFA in 09 or is he an RFA in 09?

It is actually in place for 4 more seasons--2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009--last year he signed a new 5 year deal.

Wong is far past any possibility of RFA status. RFA only applies to players who become FA's with less than 4 accrued seasons in the NFL. So when you sign a 5th round draft pick to a 3 year deal, at the end he becomes an RFA rather than a UFA. DeMeco for instance signed a 4 year deal--he will never be a RFA and will go straight to UFA status since he should have four accrued seasons.

Ahh that makes a bit more sense now why some were saying they might dump him because of his contract. But then again, they kept Joppru on the roster 3 years without playing a down too...

Joppru was relatively cheap since the signing bonus was spent money even if they cut him.

I agree, I would rather have Wong sitting this season out so he can come back 100% for us next year. This could also give him time to master the defense, and he could participate in some of the padless practices. Then next year we'll have Ryans with a year of NFL experiance under his belt and Wong in full form, if you remember in 2004 Wong had a really great year for the Texans.

And that was a change in the new CBA. No contracts over four years for second rounders and beyond - so they can't get locked in to crap deals when they would otherwise have qualified for UFA.

The most recent and the most accurate (you can take it to the bank) measurement is the one from the combine, taken barefoot.

I don't think it is too realistic to expect a guy to sit out a year and come back a beast....I think if Wong wants a spot on this team he definitely needs to try and get some playing time this year...he's already missed almost a whole season....I think if he tries to sit another one out he will become somewhat of a forgotten man...:twocents:

Not really a whole season out - Kailee got injured in game 5 of last year and had to have 2 major surgeries to get things back to semi-normal. It takes a bit of time to recover from that kind of stuff and its not like he had an injury bug history to contend with before then. I hope the staff gives him the time to try and make it back. It's just a shame if he ends up getting cut because of biz and the injury thing as we can certainly use and benefit from having a good veteran LB on our squad atm. It's not like Cowart or anyone other than D-Wreck has sttod out at the Camps this off-season at LB. IMO Kailee would bring experience to the 4-3 MLB position for us and could help Ryans develop his game.

Thats all true....BUT the team is moving so fast toward the future and there have been so many changes, and IMO, if Kailee wants any part of it he better be on the scene...He can't afford to sit out another season...That will basically be two seasons.....thats toooooo looooooong....He will become mr. Irrelavant if he has to sit out for too long...The Texans are rebuilding, trying to get fresh meat in....They are not going to wait on Kailee...If anything we would draft another LB in next years draft...IMO, He will be back this year...If not don't look for him to be apart of the Texans future...

I want to see him practicing, but not straining his injury. If he can come in late in the season thats great, but if he re-habs longer, I'll be ok with it, even if other fans are not.
