Bob McNair on SportsRadio 610

I only caught the tail end of the interview so feel free to add to these points if you have any additional information. Most of the interview seemed like a recap of things we have already heard but it was good to hear it from the owner himself.

- Under Caper's regime, some of the coaching staff needed to be replaced earlier but Dom was a pretty loyal person. McNair also went on to say that the personel changes should have taken placed in the offseason rather than during the season.

- McNair also spoke about David Carr saying that he is quick learner and should be able to make better decision since he is learning directly from Kubiak who is able to teach him the game of football through the eye of another successful quarterback (since Kube had a lot of experience in that position). McNair went on to say that this is the best person they have hired who has the most experience to teach the QB position.

- McClain went on to ask about McNair's opinion on Mario Williams and if they will be patient with him. Bob's response was that he expects him to be a superstar one day but that he understands that he is rookie and will make his mistakes. What they expect is for him to bring talent and burse of energy to the team. Also it is expected for him to not be consistent but that he definitely needs to show flashes of brilliance so that the fans can see what the Texans saw when they picked him.

Again this is all I heard so feel free to add anything in.

He may not have been the best coach, but you've gotta respect the man.
 
During the discussion of Capers and the coaching regime McNair also made a comment about the team needing more leadership last year. McNair has in other interviews talked about wanting Carr to become more of a vocal leader but my impression in this interview is he was addressing leadership from the coaching staff given the context (Capers being discussed and Carr not at the time).

The leadership issue pretty much sums up the bulk of the Texans problems last year. It all started with the release of Jamie Sharper and Aaron Glenn...the leaders on defense. Carr was incapable of being an effective leader on offense because he did not even know the direction of the offense. It all falls back to the decision making process of the GM and the coaching staff. Luckily, that won't be a problem anymore.

I don't think that was what McNair was alluding to in this interview, but OK.
 
While I'd like to hear a whole transcript of the interview, I've got a feeling that McNair played it safe and provided generic answers to everything. He doesn't seem like the kind of owner to throw any coaches or players under the bus, much less get himself involved with day-to-day football operations.

I do feel sorry for Titan fans, but thus far they have the one-up on us. They have reached a Super Bowl in Tennessee and have been successful for the most part. There is no doubt in my mind who has the better owner though, and Bob McNair wants this franchise to win. Hopefully the team doesn't disappoint. McNair has all my support though.

On the contrary, McNair was more candid about this issue today than I've ever heard. He said Capers was loyal to a fault in so many words. He didn't name assistants by name but he did refer to "assistants" that he was obviously unhappy with (as were the players) and it's not too difficult to figure out who he was talking about.

The loyalty criticism and the firing of Palmer in-season are two separate issues - don't confuse the two. Palmer was never one of the 'family' like Fangio, the Marciano's, Roman, and Pendry.

McLain asked McNair what he had learned over the last four years and his response confirmed some of my suspicions about how he will no longer give his head coach and GM full autonomy and authority ("because that's the way it's done in the NFL"). McNair didn't like Casserly telling him to pound sand and it showed when Reeves was hired. McNair said that he would be more apt to intervene now if he saw an assistant not performing to what he thought was an acceptable standard.

I don't have a problem with the level of McNair involvement at this point. I'm glad he's learning how to be an NFL owner. That's something I've written about more than once in the past few months.

Agreed. He had argubaly the best off season of any owner.
 
OK, I can go with the general drift of this theme, but lest we forget "BottomLine" Bud, he constantly meddled in the old Oilers to the absolute detriment of the team. I'm sure McNair is much too smart to do that, but it does behoove us to remember past mistakes.

In answer to a question made above, the only reason Bud's team in Music City went to the Super Bowl is becuase Tagliabue almost forced him to hire Jeff Diamond as President of the club. Diamond built the club up to where it went to the Super Bowl, not Bud. As soon as he could conveniently do so, he fired Diamond, and to my way of thinking the Titans will continue to be an also ran because of it.
 
Man, if Mcnair indeed said all those things, then what a way of taking off all tremdous pressure this young kid (Mario williams) would feel throughout the intense course of a season. I see their approach in giving him time to learn from his mistakes. Hopefully, those mistakes transfer at one point throughout the season where he shows this continued progress.

thanks. I don't expect to hear anything different then what has already been talked about... but I still like to hear it myself.

I saw that they tossed that Carr interview up into the vault yesterday.
