Sick of hearing how great Steeler fans are.

I am sick and tired of the Steeler fans being praised by the media as being loyal and great fans....blah blah blah.

Steeler fans love their team, they are proud of their team. Well that is all fine and dandy but let's not act like Steeler fans are anything special. There is no team in the NFL that is easier to be a fan of than the Steelers.

I'll go back to 1970 (about 35 years)
Steeler fans don't know what a drought is. In the last 35 years they haven't had more than 2 losing season in a row.

How hard is it to be a fan of a team that in 35 years puts up these kind of numbers:
26 winning season
9 losing season (in these 9 season 4 of them they were one win away from being a .500 team, and the worst they did was go 5-11 and they only did it once.)
1 .500 season

5 Superbowl Victories (They have been to 6 Superbowls)
12 AFC Championship games played

I hear people talk about sticking with the Steelers through the hard times. What freaking hard times? (You mean the two season they went 6-10, 7-9 in the 90's after four straight years of double digit victory seasons?) Unless you are 60 years old you don't remember their hard times.

Steeler fans don't travel well. They just have enough fans in each city that love a winner and love the color black.

Take a team that wins constantly. Add a tough guy, working class reptutation to the team. Throw in the cool masculine Black and Gold colors. Blam you have a team that is very very easy to be a fan of.

(btw...most of my family lives in Pittsburgh, we have a combined 12 season tickets, including 6 on the 45 yardline(15 rows up) that our family has had since the early 70's. I have been to 10+ steeler games ove the years, Including a few where I was decked out in "luv ya blue/columbia blue". I respect the steelers and don't mind them winning but would love to see the Texans destroy them.

But I am sick and tired of hearing how great the Steeler fans are. The Steelers are winners and everyone loves of winner.

Never been a fan of theirs, but went with a couple of buddies, who are fans, to Pitt this past December to see a game at their beautiful stadium. It was an awesome experience. The fans are knowledgeable, the town is behind it, the stadium is great, the fans wear the colors and they party like rockstars after the game.

Hopefully this is the type of base we are brewing here, but I do look forward to going up there again.

I'm primarily a Steelers fan, but I really like the Texans as well. The Steelers were absolutely horrible the first 20 years of their existence. Here is their record for the first 40 years, through 1972 - definitely a record of futility:

Steelers, Cowboys, Raiders... pretty much the three fan bases with the most history and tradition. Steeler fans know how to have fun at a football game. Gotta respect that.
 
The fact that Terry Bradshaw once sullied the Steelers rosters prevents me from ever rooting for thier team.

Why? He was a dang good QB in his time. I wish David Carr would turn out like him. But he did have 2 great WR's in Stallworth and Swan. And a good rb in Fronco Harris..

The Steelers are just a team to me that you love to hate. All good teams are like that. That is what good ownership can do for ya and keeping 1 headcoach in place through thick and thin, just MHO...

As many may know, I am originally from Pittsburgh. 30 Years worth. Grew up a Steeler fan, family has had season tickets since 1972, missed maybe 5 games maximum, since I was born. I switched allegiance due to my love for Houston years ago, and a franchise that I felt supports its' players and the city as a whole. The Steeler organization is highly overrated on this front, as I have family that work for them, an uncle and cousin that played for them, and have seen the way they treat the ticket buying fan. But, Steeler fans are still extemely passisionate. For anyone in Houston to ever make a claim that our fans are more dedicated or just as passionate is complete lunacy. Their fans will mortgage their houses for extra tickets, tailgate for weeks before the game, fight, kick, scream, and do whatever for the guys on the field. I'm not saying that all of this is rationale, but the fans are really passionate. In a city that has 400,000 people in the immediate area, the Steelers come first. Steelers come second, and Steelers come third. When they win, the rest of the week is full of sunshine, no matter what the weather, if they lose, its Katrina times 10,000. For us to play Pittsburgh last season and 1/4 to 1/2 of the fans be Steeler fans shows the difference. Had this been in Pittsburgh, vs Cleveland for example, Brown fans would not dare show up due to fear and NO STEELER FANS WOULD BE SELLING THEIR TICKET FOR NO AMOUNT OF MONEY!!! Even if an opposing team fans gets into the game, he doesn't wear his team colors or jersey. Next time you see a game, look in their crowd. The media likes to talk about Steeler fans, Philly, Green Bay, and others because they are fans, not people wishing to be entertained for 3 hours, and the outcome doesn't matter. I don't know about you, but it matters to me. If I pay $55/ticket( and I have 2 season tickets since the beginning), I want to see a great outcome. How many of us pay $8 to see a movie, and don't care if the ending is good. Same with football games. Houston fans as a whole are really not passionate at all. Support the teams, but when it comes to passion, not even close to the other teams around the country.

If we could get our fans to be as passionate, even through the hard times, we can become like Pittsburgh. Think about how fast things change. NO ONE was a fan of the Patriots UNTIL 9/11. It became Patriotic to root for the patriots then. Now they are one of the hated teams in the NFL, because they are always around. Believe, winning, especially in the Madden 07' video era, gives you a chance to become a darling of the fans across the country. I know a ton of people that are fans of teams due to mass media outlets, video games, and players changing teams. BUt you have to have a solid fan base at home and people selling their tickets because we are not a solid franchise is what will cost us a great fan foundation.

Hoping that is about to change.
Just go check out a Dynamo match.
The Passion is building. Most Dynamo fans also are Texan and Astro fans.
The Astros have about zero passion until playoff time.

I for one bleed Texans, hell.. I wore my David Carr Jersey all of last year plus on draft day this year. I wasn't :chicken:

People always talk smack about our boys. Even thou half of them are Cowboy bandwagon fans just riding the highs of the '90s.

People were litterally protesting in the streets for Matt Millen to be fired last year, but the idiots are still going to sell out the stadium again.
Hopefully the Tigers are in the playoffs and Lions fans go across the street.

What happens to the fans of other teams if they show up wearing their team colors or jersey?

Is it something the Pittsburgh fans can be proud of? Something to boast about? Something Texan fans should emulate?

Anything like the riots at 'kickball' games in third world countries where some deaths actually occur?

I will take sportsmanship over throwing things on the field every time.

It's easy to be passionate about the Steelers, with a long history, some players very well known outside of football, national recognition, and the Dallas Cowboys type of appeal. Plus it helps that the team is in the northeast, where they're going to get attention in a lot of big cities.

What does Houston have? A somewhat recent history, few players very well known outside of a specific sport, little national recognition besides playoffs, and almost no appeal outside of Texas. Also, it hurts the teams that there are no really big cities anywhere in nearby states that might show some interest in games.
 
Coffee, I'm not slamming the Texans Fans. I think Houston does have some PASSIONATE fans, some of which I tailgate with and have become found of over the years. I also don't think that you have to beat on the opposing fans, or become rude and obnoxious. But there is a difference in watching a game, and cheering for your team.

If you want to watch a game, watch it on the couch. At times, this is what Reliant seems like, a huge living room with a big screen tv, and mom saying "don't get to loud, we may wake grandma or the neighbors!" Where is the home field advantage? We're supposed to be loud throughout the entire game, not only when a big play happen. This is what causes the other team to become distracted. If you go to Pittsburgh, or some of the other fields, fans won't beat on you, but will give you a friendly debate during the entire game. It makes the game more enjoyable to discuss each play, to get perspectives of those who usually have more knowledgable than the Tv announcers. Pittsburgh/Cleveland is an extreme rivalry, but the fans get jacked up for other teams. The cities don't like each other, the people don't like other, heck, no one in PGH likes anything about cleveland. BUt, at times Reliant seems like a walk in the park. If I was an opposing team, I would love to play here. More often than not, you feel like you playing at home, quiet on offense and you see more of your fans than Texan fans. Did you go to the Pgh game last season? My family was here and laughed the entire time "we have more fans at the game than you do!" Did you go to the Green Bay game, I saw more cheese there than at Randall's sale last week for the 4th. What about when we played KC? Dante Hall's family almost had an entire section in 2004 on the 300 level. It was a sea of red. This would never happen at these stadiums that some talk about, like PGH, Green Bay, Philly, and KC.

This isn't a slam, but we must protect our house and make it the best place to play for our team. Hopefully the Smith style of defense will bring a toughness, that rubs off on the fans. I'm Steel Blue from the beginning. I travel to away games and get roused. I returned home to watch us play Pittsburgh, and receved the jeers from MY ENTIRE SECTION (They Knew me since my birth!!!), but it's all in good fun. I wonder in 20-30 years if I will be able to say the same for my son? Will the section know him, or will he just be another guy? Or will Texan tickets be sold and passed around like a Ricky Williams splif, during a Bob Marley convention. Don't sell tickets to opposing fans. If you give them to friends, tell them to wear Texan gear and cheer, not just attend and drink. At these other venues, the best way to explain it is, the fans become a family, that rubs off on the city. Both the city and the team take on the same personality. The people in PGH are great, but during football games, it would be the equal to "yankees" coming into Texas and stomping on the Texas state flag. Your in for a butt kickin'! I hope we just get the same personality here, along with our southern charm and respect.

Any fans, including Steeler fans, would find cheering for a 2-14 team that hardly ever had a lead (much less a consistent drive) tough to do.

The 2004 season for the Texans was different, though. Reliant was turning into quite the homefield advantage, and it was even getting noticed by the national media as one of the loudest venues to play at. In addition, the FO kept stats for the fans regarding how many false starts, timeouts, and messed up audibles were caused by homefield crowd noise.

Don't let the 2005 season be a reflection of Texans fans. Like I said, 2-14 will deflate fans of ANY given team.

And besides, let's be honest here. What else does the city of Pittsburgh have other than their football team? Not slamming the city, but it's just the truth of the matter that there's not much else there. Same could be said of Green Bay, too.

And having NFL Championships in a team's history never hurts, either.
 
Pittsburgh is really a Large city, inside small confines. Although the numbers aren't there, it's hardly like Green Bay with old folks riding in horse and buggy....lol Has greatly changed from blue collar to white collar, with many of the nations largest companies going there. Great art district, universities, beautiful layout with hills, valleys, and beautiful downtown area. Baseball team would change immediately with a salary cap, as players love to play and live there. School systems are in the top 15% in the US. The hockey team will rebuild definitely. If Pittsburgh had more of a racial diverse backround, most never would think about moving, but living in a city of black and white, when the world is in HD color, has worn pretty thin on the younger population. That is the sole reason for population numbers not growing. Location is in the midst of some of the other major cities and states, without having to pay their tax rates, such as NY, MD, DC area, VA, and OH. Not Houston with hospitality, but not many places are. There's a bit from both cities I would love to take, but I guess I can't have it all.
