Since nothing else is going on..is anyone else worried?

Since nothing else is going on I thought id ask..is anyone else worried about how much we are taking after the Broncos?

Before I go any further let me set a few things straight.

1. I love what we have done this offseason and have high hopes for this season.

2. Kubiak is a great choice for HC.

3. I like our new philosphies.

Let me also make it clear that I have no problem with us adopting a similar style of play as the Broncos. They may not have been in the superbowl recently but they have stayed competitive, and really.. thats what you need to do.. just stay competitive and hope for a streak at the end of the year.

No, what worries me is the scouting, and the type of players we may start bringing in.

Maurice Clarret
The entire browns defensive line
Ron Dayne
Jake Plummer
Javon Walker

All of these players were high risk signings. More than any other team in the NFL, it seems the Broncos like to make those controversial deals that has people shaking thier heads. I dunno if it is arrogance, or perhaps a greater "vision" that makes them do these things.. but they seem to have a "boom or bust" philosophy when it comes to the draft and free agency.

Now, I dont mind a little bit of "chance" in our signings.. but im praying that our front office does not make the same kind of reaches that the Broncos make. I dont want us to draft the next Claret, or sign the entire Cardinals Oline, or any of that nonsense.. I like to see chances taken, as long as that recklessness is tempered with a much greater portion of safe, intelligent choices.

It's kind of nerve-racking, but at least I have no doubt that we will be better than what we were. How much better in the long run is very hard to know.

We have taken the good from Denver...and learned from the bad. I think the risk-factor will be a no-factor and we won't really take any big chances on players.

I honestly have full faith in the front office and coaching staff at this moment. That, however, is no measurable prediction for success. :mario:

if you look at the players you mentioned they all happened in the last year..kubiak had been there for years b4 that..its more shanahan becoming more desperate for another SB in my eyes...

and then when you look at the guys we drafted and signed this off-season..to me its a non-issue..maybe you should post this on the bengals board though

I understand the thinking, but The Broncos can always call scoreboard on anyone who thinks their picks are risky. You don't get to be one of the best teams in the league for years by making too many mistakes. Not that they haven't made a few bad choices but the results speak for themselves.

I'll take being like the Broncos. They had a much better record than we did last year and they are one of the more consistent teams in the league. It's been broke.....we need to fix it.

I'm not worried about the risk factor a bit. Almost all of those "risks" you mentioned were positive one's. Plummer's been more successful than all the other QB's since Elway (whether you like him or not) and the Browns line was fairly productive under Shanahan's watch, so it's no big deal to me.

Shanahan was/is the gunslinger/gambler on the Broncos who tries to match up with the "Geniuse" tag that he has gotten. Not sure that Kubes plays that fast and loose.

Clarrett I agree was a risk in the draft, but he was the last pick in the 3rd round so I wouldn't consider it too high of a risk. Denver's defense was ranked 15th in the NFL last season, and 2nd in the NFL against the run, it was a risk bringing in those guys from Cleveland, but a risk that paid off for Denver IMO. Ron Dayne was battling Tatum Bell for the starting RB spot a few weeks ago so that IMO paid off also. Plummer has had success since coming to Denver, and Javon Walker I would not consider a risk except for maybe injury concerns, he did seem to have a bit of an attitude problem in Green Bay, but I attribute that to Favre sticking his nose in where it did not belong. And we don't even really know if Kubiak had a hand in any of the decision making of any of this. IMO you have to take some risks to try and be successful, which IMO is on of the many problems that plagued Capers regime, it seemed they were afraid to take risks as far as playcalling and in other areas.

It might be a little risky, but Denver has been successful. The Browns were terrible with those high first round picks on their O-line. With a little coaching, the Broncos made them very effective. Here, we haven't had a good pass rush EVER. With a little (good) coaching, hopefully that will also change. I'm not sure how much of a risk Jake Plummer was. Yes, he wasn't very good in Arizona, but I don't think anybody wrote him off as being awful, so it's not like the Broncos sighed Cade McCown and made him the starter. Maurice Clarett was just Shananan's ego I think. Clarett wasn't predicted to go until the 2nd day (5th or 6th round I think). Shananan seemed to be saying "Any running back we have will rush for over 1000 yards, so I'll do it with Clarett". That didn't work out. But, the Broncos system has worked. Ours hasn't. Even with some of their riskier offseason and drafting moves, I would take those over what we've done the last four years.

Until taking after the Broncos is proven to be a bad thing or until the new staff loses our faith, I have no reason other than to believe that this isnt something to worry about. Denver did lose to the SB champs last year in the AFC Championship game so if we end up coming close like that I wont mind . . .

I would think the Raiders would have the tag of being the biggest risk takers in the NFL. Also, look at what ourformer regime did last year(P-Burnt most notably) and compare that with Ron Dayne and Jevon Walker. Those two were PROVEN commodities in the NFL. P-Burnt had a bad rep in only 2 years and was living on potential.I think that in the next few years the "Broncos of the South" tag will go away as Kubes establishes his own identity as a head coach and the identity of the Texans as a whole. Going to be real interesting to follow both teams(ALL you guys know we will) and see how Shanahans' genius tag holds up without Kubes and Smith in the background and how Kubes does being the one responsible for the whole show.
:stirpot:

We've got their Offensive Coordinator, their QB coach....... WR coach......... Their Tight end......... thier GM........ ummm..... yeah, I think people are going to make that comparison.............. Besides, we've been trying to install their run system(ala Pendry/Palmer) into our game for a couple of years anyway.

but, make no mistake. Kubiak is not Shanahan. We are going to continue to run the ball, because that's who we are. But I believe Kubiak is looking for a more prolific passing attack than what is in Denver.

I only hope that Kubiak isn't too comfortable with the Denver comparisons.... I hope it's a monkey on his back, that he wants to throw..... so much so that we never loose a game to Denver......

You can add another Bronco that lives in Carolina to the tally. It appears that this is Smith's first "hire".

( follow the orange bouncing ball )

Houston Broncos, HEWston Broncos, Hewston Broncos Number 1, NUMBER ONE!

:highfive:

Alright..YEAH. Go Broncos!!

:monkey:

On a side note:

I wonder how long it is going to be before McNair retires #7 and hangs John Elway up as the first player in the Texans' Ring of Honor?

Also Mr.Thunderkyss check out Clemens, it will make you a better art critic

Javon Walker maybe but Ron Dayne as a proven commodity? If anything he was more of a proven bust than P-Buc. He had three years at a 3.4 ypc average and one break out year at 3.8 ypc--one year the Giants didn't activate him the entire year. That's 5 years of suckage from an 11th overall draft pick (Dayne has had only one day over 100 yds in his career--his 3rd game ever against the Aints). At least P-Buc (17th overall pick) had one solidly above average year in 2003 when he intercepted 6 balls (2 for TD's), forced 2 fumbles and returned 2 punts for TD's.

According to the "Latest News" of the Texans, we just hired what looks to be one of the Bronco's better college scouts. Does anyone have anything on this guy Dale Strahm? From what the article says, he sounds like he's got a lot of experience.

FYI Kyle Shanahan (our WR coach) never coached in Denver, he was in Tampa last year, but he is obviously the son of Mike Shanahan. I hope Kubiak does open up the passing game a little (Plummer did have almost 4100 passing yards for them in 2004), Carr definitely has the talent for it and with Andre and Moulds we have enough talent catching the ball (not to mention our TEs, RBs, etc.).

I'm trying to do the math here.......... 5 years........ 11th overall....... 3.4 ypc(which ain't too bad..... I mean three carries, and you've got a 1st)........ = bust..... hmm...

This is on a team with Tikki Barber(who alot of people around here thinks is a god.).
I'm having touble with this.... poor performance after 5 years..... 11th overall=bust.......

so, poor performance after 4 years...... 1st overall= ?? what??

I've got to go get my calculator for this one...........

Nice job of trollishly injecting an off-topic proof of your anti-Carr bias. Why yes Alex, I would like to follow that up with Another Nonsensical Comparison Purely to Irritate for $1000.

This is on a team with Tikki Barber(who alot of people around here thinks is a god.).

Now watch closely--Tiki averaged 4.7 ypc behind the same OL during the same time frame. Seems to me whatever you were trying to do bringing up Tiki makes your point worse not better.

I've got to go get my calculator for this one...........

Try looking at chicken entrails--it seems more consistant with your other "analysis."

Please tell me that ONE DAY you will stop hating on Carr and try and protect yourself in case he does well in the future by saying things like "I won't criticize him during the season" and blah blah blah. We're tired of this already...this is a moot point about a BACKUP RUNNING BACK and not for a QB. You should at least be able to realize that that is comparing apples and oranges.

Besides...the guy didn't say Carr wasn't performing well or was more worthy of anything. You're the guy who's got to make his "Vince Young is a Demi-God who obviously produced more than Carr in college because Carr was product of the combine even though he garnered 45+ touchdowns his senior year..."

We can all play this game...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it stop...my brain hurts.

I pray that David will eventually do well. I don't need to protect myself... the fact is that he hasn't.......

I know I'm not the only one here who sees the double standard.......

& Ron Dayne vs. Tikki Barber..... how would NewYork look, had they given up on Tikki after 4 years....... which I believe they were awful close.

Hey GRID, what are you talking about here? You have a list of about 8 qustionable picks that the broncos have, now the broncos have been around longer than we have, and we have more qustionable picks than they do? How can you not like what we are doing. I know it's the off-season......right?:crying:

Im just talking about the very odd moves that the Broncos have made over the last 4 or 5 seasons. They have done some off the wall stuff.

I don't get it...are you saying they should have given up on Tiki because he didn't produce in 4 years?

It seems as though you're saying it was a good thing they didn't proves the point everyone else is trying to make...Just give Carr a chance to succeed and we're sure he'll get the job done.

I know college prospects don't always translate into the NFL, but Carr put up "video game" number his senior year. I think he'll do well enough for us to win us a championship if we get a good line, since we have solid receivers and an (at least) average running core.

I'm not saying Carr is the sure thing guy...all I'm saying is just give him a fair chance and stop criticizing him. He's been working harder than anyone on the team (and quite possibly in the NFL) not only to show that he's worthy of his job but to make sure that he's light years ahead of other people in his position going into his first year in a new system (case in point: Michael Vick).
