Even though he is fast he would probably get burned by much slower receivers.
Billy Johnson was a great punt returner because he had rubber legs. He wasn't a speed demon and not as good a kick returner. Mathis is the opposite. He is a better kick returner than Punt returner since he has great straight away speed....although he is a little wooden when it comes to moves (not so good for punt returners).srstex said:The old saying holds true here, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Mathis is a ProBowl return man, with another year under his belt he could be a Billy White Shoes.
Everyone talks about all this hating Mathis and his cocky, poor attitude....but I have only seen one article talking about some problems he was having with the new WR coach, Shanahan. Some actual links to all this cocky behavior and extreme bad attitude would be much appreciated. And the motorcycle one says nothing about being cocky or having a bad attitude....more than it says he made a foolish mistake that many players have made, I guarantee he isn't the only one riding around on a motorcycle occasionally in the offseasons (apparently he just wasn't too good at it), just be glad he isn't involved in the 800 other problems for players in the first 3 years - like drugs, girls, fights, and just immature criminal activity that unfortunately sometimes comes with the jump from unknown to star. But yeah....several credible links from different sources and situations to all this cocky bad attitude would be great. Not just the hear-say that gets magnified on this board becuase one person offers an opinion or assumption as if it were a fact and then posters take it as the truth accidently and run with it....

He has the speed to compete with other recievers. He could turn out to be a Deion Sanders or something. Who knows..
Vinny said:DB's need special skills like great hips to turn and run quickly while in a backpeddle (not everyone can do this), and they also need to sprint....backwards. Not everyone can do this well either. Mathis has great straight away speed...but you need much more than that to play CB.
This off-season is way way way too long.
