When he was at LSU, they called him a scatback. Small, quick to accelerate, and able to make cuts on a dime. I saw him in a game one time when the defense stuffed the run on the line. Davis was so small, no one was able to get a hand on him in the pile. He just spun around, took a step back and was gone. Gained a huge chunk of yards. I don't remember if he got a touchdown, I just remember thinking the play was over and seeing this little missile fire out of the smoke. It was a hell of a run.

You cannot call Davis a speed back because that's just not what he does. 9 times out of 10 he's going to get caught from behind on long runs and it's very rare that the Texans aren't playing a team where at least half the secondary (and some of the linebackers) aren't faster than DD.

When the guy catches him he'd better be ready for a fight though because Davis doesn't go down easy. He's a "smallish" back who runs with more power and authority than his size would indicate. the one thing that I think keeps him from being truly dangerous is his inability to stay healthy.

I'm not talking about missing major chunks of the season because he's not been all that much worse than many other running backs in his three years. I'm talking about the minor injuries that accumulate over the course of a season and with which an NFL running back is expected to produce. Davis gets dinged up and he's a different player. If he didn't have that problem he'd be what I'd call an un-flashy 1300+ yards per season back. With it he's been about a grand a year guy who's one good draft away from being the 3rd down back he was drafted to be.

I cannot wait to see how he fits into this new offense though. I believe this offense was made for Domanick to run wild in.

The past was a smokescreen.....it's a whole new world. We can take a page out of the Kubiak and co. guide to a TEXANS makeover. Forget the old films that keep running through your head....everyone's got a clean slate.

Nice optimism but no, the past isn't always a "smokescreen" and sometimes a guy is exactly what he appears to be. I like Davis a lot but he's going to get hit in this offense just like he did in the old one. I hope that a) He stays healthy because I think he was born to run in a system like this, and b) We find someone to back him up because after three years if anyone is counting on Domanick Davis to be able to throw this team on his back and carry them for 16 games they're kidding themselves.

Absolutely he's got the kind of heart to try and do it. How can anyone not like this guy? He's just not in the kind of body that holds up well to the beating of an NFL season at RB.

First, IMO you shouldn't worry on a fantasy team about categories and worry more about production. That aside, DD is much more toward power than speed. DD is a decisive back who can pick a hole and accelerate cleanly thru it in prompt fashion. He has good vision in picking his holes and enough shiftiness and vision to minimize but not avoid contact and enough power to run thru quite a bit of contact. He will almost invariably get the last 1-2 yds out of a run by finishing it off unless hit high hard. He can take advantage of good blocks and angles to get some longer runs but speed other than acceleration out of the blocks is not his game nor is juking folks completely out of their shoes--i.e. he will maximize his opportunities, minimize his contact and sometimes run thru the contact, but he isn't going to flat out create room with speed.

I don't look for him to be asked to carry this offense. I see alot of diversity in the backs we have on the roster. I don't necessarily expect everybody to make the cut, but I think the staff plans to run an offense using several backs. Additionally, Kubes made it quite clear in comments posted on this site today that they are still looking for more help at that position. I think the odds of Domanick making this season without injury are much higher because he won't be asked to do it all by himself. In my opinion, that's exactly what he was asked to do in the past.

Of course....this is completely my opinion.....but you have to go with your gut instinct. That's one the things that makes sports exciting. This team is putting the pieces in place.

take into consideration how the scoring is calculated.in my leagues we get a point a catch.so you can rack up a lot of extra points w/guys like DD and westbrook.or it could be a touchdown league so i would definitely check the scoring layout before drafting.sounds like maybe its your first year in a league so good luck. btw ,i was in three leagues last year and had #1,#1,and#2 overall and took dom in all 3.yes .......i was ridiculed relentlessly......but thats how i roll.

Davis is a speed back. Once he gets tackled, he will rarely drag anybody 1-2 yards upfield.

if not for carrying defenders, our run blocking would've been seen as being as bad as our pass blocking (which it was). he's the only rb to average more than 4 yards per carry as a texan (wells 3.1, mack 2.7, allen 3.3, hollings 3.0), and did so despite being hit behind the line of scrimmage more often than not. DD is more than capable of carrying linebackers and powering through the line.

as for the question, he's neither IMO. of the choices, he's more of a power back though because it's rare that he makes more than one lateral move, and is much more successful breaking tackles up the middle than he is trying to outrun defenders or juke past them.

Let's hope he makes it INTO this season........that's my main concern at this point.

I agree. I haven't seen anything new in a while on him. I know it's the month of mystery but I was hoping to see or hear something. Does anyone have any new information on his status?

November 28, 2004 - Tennessee Titans at Houston Texans

Running back Domanick Davis had a field day against the Tennessee Titans and led them to a 31-21 win at Reliant Stadium. Davis rushed 16 times for 129 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also added seven receptions for 52 yards. The Texans were down 21-10 at halftime, but were able to regroup and managed to score 21 unanswered points in the second half. Quarterback David Carr was good on 21 of 30 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. The win gave the Texans their first-ever sweep of a division opponent, having beaten the Titans 20-10 earlier in the year.

DD can't be classified as a speed or a power back because he doesn't do either exceptionally well....IMO, he is just a persistent back...He has a strong will and doesn't go down easily...

He is not a speed back or a power back, but he is a descent combination of the two. He's more quick than anything, I would say. He's hard to hit just the way you want to hit him and he will shed your tackle, by making you half miss and half hit him, then using a little power to go through it.

And I must add the great hands he's got. I hope we don't rely on those dump-offs toooooo much anymore, but he's sure there when he's needed.

Another thing about not relying on DD to carry a team for 16 games is that, even if he did, he could get hurt right at the start of the playoffs and miss a significant part of that. Of course, most of us aren't expecting play-offs right now anyway, but it's just a point to be made.

All in all, I say we keep him around. :)

The word I would use to describe him is shifty.

This years team will have RB by committee. Dominick Davis will be out for the first several games, so it will be Smith, Morency, and the rookie Lundy doing most of the work. Smith is a big back who did well during his SB years with NE, and last year with the Saints after McAllister got hurt. Morency may have some injury issues himself, so we may get an early look at Lundy, too.
