New article on Wand

I was waiting for some one else to post this article. My favorite line in this article is "Mickey Mouse Stuff" when referring to the previous year. We are seeing article after article coming out on how players are responding to the new coaching staff and appearing to be infinitely better than thought. Another common theme is yea forget the tapes or film of last year.

I've said before I don't think the current coaching staff could believe what they were seeing on tape and film. Yes, it was that bad. Many of us have said don't judge our players by what they did in the past. Judge them based on what the new staff is saying. The irony of that is that's what the current staff is saying to our players. We are not going to judge based on the past, but what you do know. You're starting with a clean slate.

It is absolutely astonding how many people are stepping up to the plate. They want to play football and want to forget the past. They all indicate they want to work hard and make the team. They don't mind the competition, they just want a fair chance. The previous team must have been a political nightmare.

Very good points. I can't wait for training camp and see the names of the cream rising to the top. I bet it will looklike some of the threads on here asking why certain players are on the bench....:spy:

Good stuff.

Things are already on the upswing for Wand. At this point in the offseason he seems to be planted in the starting lineup, and he’s enjoying every minute so far.

He has the attitude and the skills to take advantage of this chance. I'm glad to see this staff make decisions on football ability rather than other things. I'm not surprised at what he and the coaches had to say, but it was good to see it in print.

I fully expect this to continue through the season, and if he does continue to play to the standards set by these coaches, he will be a cornerstone of the o-line. Go Wando!

I would rather have Spencer take over after a while, unless Wand does his thing like the coaches think he can do.

"“You always get the money defensive end, the best pass rusher,” Wand said. “You’re always going to get the blitzes from that side. You always have to be aware of who you’re playing against, being aware of what they like to do blitz-wise.”
****************************************************
And if Wand can deliver this year at LT, as an UFA next year he'll be the money guy himself at offensive tackle.

I'd like to have the better player play, regardless of the last name on the jersey.

Yep. That is the danger of these one year tenders. What's a coaching staff/front office to do? They probably could have gotten a reasonable long term contract done this year if they tried, but that carries more risk than seeing how the season turns out. However, if the season turns out well for Wand he's a high value free agent at a critical position.

I like Seth Wand and I was always intrigued by his potential. Hope he solidifies his position as our left tackle for now and the future.

"“We’re dealing with the present,” Sherman said. “The only evaluation I have to go by is what he does each and every day he is out here. I’ve seen film from last year, but it wouldn’t be fair to hold anything I might see on film against our players.”
Sherman added that while Wand still has some technique issues to work on, he likes Wand a lot as an athlete and thinks he can be a solid left tackle in the NFL.
“From an athletic standpoint, for a big guy, he really can move around very well,” Sherman said. “Athletically, what you look for from a left tackle as a pass blocker and a run blocker, he certainly possesses the talent you need in those areas.”
*******************************************************
Can you imagine, after what poor ole Seth went thru last year with the bozo
coaching crew the Texans had, to have a guy who has a line on his resume
which reads, "Head Coach, Green Bay Packers: 2000-2005", say those things
about you as your current OL coach. Wand probably pinchs himself every
day at practice.

I pinch myself twice everyday ...

It is a motto we might need to live by for a while.

Agreed. I think 2005 season film is especially worthless for player evaluation. I've said before that there were so many things going wrong simultaneously - coaching, schemes, teammates not doing well or out of position, attitude, injuires, etc. - it is hard to accurately evaluate individual players.

Wow, that is almost an indictment. That wasn't PC at all.

I was about to post that myself. What an indictment.

I'm going to try it on for size :thumbup :)

Sherman is licking his chops because he knows he will get the sweet HC gig next season.

I couldn't agree more. You hear all the time how the talent in the NFL is much more consistent from the top to the bottom than people think and it seems like every year now someone goes from a 4-12 season to an 11-5 record (or the reverse, from 12-4 to 6-10).

A 4-12 team isn't all that different from a 7-9 team or even a 10-6 team. A few plays go one way instead of another, somebody overlooks you and doesn't show up and just like that you've got a few extra wins and you look pretty good. When a team gets to 2-14 though then that's more than just a matter of one or two problems. That's a situation where the wheels just came off of the thing and the losing took on a life of it's own.

Plus the 2005 season really started to go downhill around midseason 2004, in Denver if I'm not mistaken.

Just look at the Texans last year. We weren't out of too many games. A big play here and there and we could've been 8-8 and still dealing Capers. Maybe it was a good thing that he not only sucked at getting the players in proper schmes, but also at motivating them to play upto or above their potential. :twocents:

Few plays? You aren't kidding:

11/06 21-14 Jacksonville
11/27 33-27 St. Louis
12/04 16-15 Ravens
12/11 13-10 Tenn
01/01 20-17 SF

Those five games go the other way, and the Texans are a seven-win team, matching their best record to date. IMO, it would have been hard to keep Capers even with that record, but Cass would probably still be here, and Houston would be "rebuilding" a team with less draft impact.

IMO, it was almost impossible to win those games no matter how close the score was. In these games we did accomplish our goal: we kept it close.

If we had a goal such as: attack until you win, then I agree - we could easily have won those games.

All of those teams stink, other than JAX. As I want to wipe the slate clean for all players and their evaluations due to the p[ast staff, we should also wipe false hope due to competing with awful teams. Moreover, they were mostly awful games.

Good point. I'm assuming that is the new coaching staff's philosophy.

That's where a decent scheme and proper motivation/ utilization of talent on hand comes in. Capers managed to fail spectacularly at all.:brickwall

I disagre about Capers failing to motive his players. The fact that they were still fighting in close games despite the season being a lost cause, speaks well of a coach. Now schemeing and knowing the type of complentary players to aquire as well as knowing when to ditch cordinators is a whole other stories

No doubt, V. It still trips me out that we even have him. It's really an honor, IMO, and a good sign regarding our owner. When men like Sherman and Dan Reeves are willing to work for you, it's never a bad thing. :thumbup

ok so what will our O-line be this year then, wand at LT, mckinney at LG? flanigan at center, wiegart at RG, Salaam/Spencer at RT?

Right now it is:

Wand - Pitts - Flanagan - McKinney - Weigert.

I'd be surprised if it changes before the beginning of the season, but then again, I've been surprised before.

With the bench being

Spencer - Weary- Holden - Winston - Sallam

Has anyone heard anything about how the O-Line is doing? Are they getting GK's Zone Blocking System down :yahoo: , or are they struggling with it?

I've asked this before on another thread, but I'll ask it here to see if anybody has heard anything.

All I've heard about the o-line is that Mike Flanagan is providing leadership along the line, and that with acquisition of Flanagan, McKinney is more comfortable back at his natural position of guard. Add that to this and previous Wand articles, and you pretty much get the gist of what most of the fans know about our O-line this year.

Its tough to grade out blockers until you get to full contact, pads and hitting. Laying blocks, shedding blocks and beating blocks are violent acts and you really can only judge footwork in light drills.

ok...I get that Sallam is supposed to be Ephraim Salaam, but who is Holden? Do you mean Drew Hodgdon?

And since a few of our players needed work there, it's nice they've addressed that fairly extensively before the full contact work starts.

Thanks for the correction. I really like the idea of having some veteran experience on the bench especially with the tackles, but we will see. I think Winston could be part of the guard rotation.
