Eric Winston is a Beast!!!

Texican

Practice Squad
I saw eric winston Saturday @ All Access

All I can say is he is a beast!!

WOW

Just put him on the right side and he can play RG and RT

at the same time

I just hope he gets a chance to play seemed like a real nice guy but i wouldnt want to be across from him on the line

crazy hair too

I really hoped that he would turn out to be our fixture at LT. But it seems that they will play him on the right side. I think that if his knee gets back to 100% the coaches will move him back over to the left side where he could dominate.

yah i saw some clips of spencer on tv at the draft, and he looked really good, he was strong, so that he can hold the guys, but he also is very athletic for his size, he will make the texans o-line great.

You are not kidding. I saw him walking through the locker room and he looked like an extra from Lord of the Rings. But in a good way.

All the pictures of him on the internet do not really demonstrate what he looks like. The slick down hair picture on his draft profiles is as about as mortal as he can look. Oh my.

I hope Winston and Spencer can win starting spots at some point in the early part of the season, you can call be a bad fan, but Pitts and Weary have never impressed me. they were given ample time to develop, but they just look lost alot of the time. I think pitts could be a good 2nd string guard, but I dont think he's tackle material, and definately not left tackle. anyone ?

Two rookie bookend tackles. I think we would be running the risk of hindering player development by putting them in before they are ready. However, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence - this goes double for football rookies. Rookies are frequently thought of as better than what a team already has. When they aren't, people wonder what happened. Generally, NFL competition is what happened.

By the way, our current first team tackles are Wand and Wiegert; Pitts and Weary are playing guard, with only Pitts being first team.

As far as "ready to play," I've heard that Spenser is closer to NFL-ready than Winston, which surprised me. I always thought Spenser was the one who would need more work, but it sounds like Eric is the "diamond in the rough" and will need more time. I don't expect either to start this year, except maybe Special Teams.

Definatly, I agree 100%. Wasn't Winston thought to be a 1st rounder on some boards before the draft? Spencer looks like a big ol' meanie, too.

We really added to the lines this year in a nice way. Win the battle in the trenches.

It's not uncommon to start your future LT @ Right Tackle........ it's also not uncommon to put an aging LT @ RT..... but it's good training for Winston to get good time at RT, as opposed to just getting Garbage time @ LT.........

I'd really like to see Wand given a fair shot at LT..... I think he is more than just serviceable...... Spencer for the future, if Wand proves to be just "serviceable"

Spencer was a DL first with the U of Pittsburgh and didn't move over to the
O side of the line until his jurnior year (2004), and then as a guard. So last
year is the only time he's had as a tackle, and only his second year as an OLineman.
Winston on the other hand was the 'canes LT in 2003 and part of 2004 before he blew out his knee, then again last year.
And this is off the subject, but the new LT at Miami this fall is expected to be Reggie Youngblood, 2005 grad of BT Washington HS here in Houston.
This guy is not expected to red-shirt, he's that good so if he lives up to expecs he should be in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Outside of these boards, I never saw Winston ranked higher than the second round. However, I attribute his status as a potential first-rounder to the claim that this was a deep draft and that many second-rounders this year were of equivalent ability to first-rounders of previous years. TIFWIW.

Saw Winston up close Saturday ..... between his size and his hair I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley .... looked like a humongous Hell's Angel ....

This site Has him ranked as the third best OT....

and being deep in the draft would mean more first rounders falling into the second/third.... If this were a deep draft, and he was only a fair prospect, he would've been projected as a good second day pickup.

Exactly. I was shocked to hear that Spenser is more ready than Winston. I am not sure who has a better shot. Like I said, from what I've heard, Spenser is more ready (mentally prepared) than WInston to play ball. Whether Spenser plays next year depends on Wand's performance. Wand's progression has been steadily improving from what I've heard. On the other hand, this could be Weigert's last year because of age. So which rookie will see the field sooner is still up in the air.

I saw plenty of mock drafts and projections that showed Winston in the 1st round, some as high as the low 20's. I'm not sure where you were looking, but it wasn't very hard, as it wasn't hard to find those projections.

Yes, and that was post-injury. Pre-injury he was ranked ahead of D'brick by everyone.

For some reason every team in the league passed on Winston multiple times until we picked him in the 3rd round. I don't buy the reasons in the vein of "there was a run on safeties, so nobody picked tackles". Offensive tackle is too critical a position for most teams to pass on a "first round talent" so many times. In the end, many people with more expertise than we posters passed on him. I know there are sleepers in the draft, but Winston was a well known, well studied player.

All that being said, I expect Winston to pan out. He has the physical attributes (and not just long hair!) to be a good player in this league. However, I think he will need some seasoning and will not be an impact starter his rookie year. He may get some PT if injuries occur, but I am leery of projecting a 3rd round lineman who needs development work into an early starting role. I'd predict he breaks into the starting line-up to start his second season on the team.

There were more than just offensive tackles in the draft. Personally, I think he is the second best tackle. Justice is a head case, and I expect him to implode within a few years (JMO).

Hahahah nice! Winston is a beast indeed. He has the tanacity and likes to not just stop his assignment, but dominate them and make them look silly.

When we got Demeco, I thought we lost him for sure, but dayum! He was there in the third.... my heart stopped. To get spencer too..... he was very fluid in the combine for a guy his size.

We should have been drafting oline a loong time ago.

:francis: :francis:
My thought exactly! Draft day, I am sitting in the old chair with predictions, bios, what each team needed by round all over my lap, the couch, floor, etc. and Demco's name was called. Oh man, my living room look like a tornado hit! And I'm trying to quit cussing. That selection set me back a long ways. Nothing against the L/B, I just wanted Winston. Then we got him in 3rd. Whoopie! I was doing the funky chicken and that is an ugly sight.:yahoo:

This guy is our future left tackle, no doubt about it. Alot of scouts have listed him as a right tackle since he has short arms for his size. What a joke. Left tackles only need long arms if the don't have good foot work or are too fat to move well.

Winston is a very talented tackle prospect. He has a great frame, with room for additional growth. He is a very good athlete, with very good agility. He has great footwork, and is always in position to keep his man in front of him. When asked to get out and move, he shows the ability to move quickly and set up to pick up his man on the move. Winston's toughness is second to none and he will not back down from anyone. He also has untapped potential left, as he has only played on the offensive line for three seasons.
Winston is a speciman with really quick feet, and a nasty streak. Sweeeeet!

Sherman will mess around with Wade for a little while at the begining of the season, but by the end of the season, Winston will be our starting LT.

did you mean wand and then winston at LT or Wade with Winston at RT?

I thought he was professional enough to do what was right and not just mess around.

Wand is our LT. Sherman has the player he thinks is best there right now. Sure, things could change in the coming months, but Sherman isn't just experimenting.

I'm surprised at how many people still agree with Pendry's evaluation of Wand.

Sorry, my bad, Winston will replace Wand at LT. And, I think Winston is the real deal and will be a mainstay at LT.

I think with Winston he missed Junior year with knee injury, so he is only going to be in 2nd year after surgery in 2006. Everything have seen and read says takes 2 years AFTER surgery to get back to 100%. so he practices gets in a few games in 2006 and in 2007 dominates our opponents...IT'S ALL GOOD:redtowel: :redtowel:

I agree. I would be ok with Winston seeing limited time this first year. I want to get him more upper body strength and let him adjust. I want Spencer inside at G, but I could easily live with him at RT. I just don't see Spencer ever being an effictive LT.

Winston hurt his knee in September 2004, so two full years will be the very start of this season, his knee is not an issue anymore, the only possible effects from it would be that it has slowed his development the last two years. Either way I do expect him to be starting at either RT or LT by mid-season, depending on who is playing better between Wand and Wiegert. Thusfar Wand has not looked real good, Mario has owned him and Peek and Babin have all looked pretty good against him too whereas Wiegert has held his own much better.

This statement is based on what?

I am asking because I've heard that both Wand and Weary have been hearing unaccustomed praise from the coaching staff - on the field and in the film room.

If this "ownership" is real, as well as Peek and Babin doing so well, I'm surprised Coach Sherman hasn't taken any action yet and ended this silly experiment.

infantrycak said:
Frankly, Mario better be "owning" Wand on at least some plays or the Texans have made a serious mistake.

Yes, but you know how it is around here: "I saw Mario beat Wand, therefore Wand sucks". It couldn't be that Mario is so good he wins some one-on-one battles (when he pretty much knows what play is coming). I guess all players will have people who dislike them no matter what.

One final thought on the subject:

Coaches Sherman, Calhoun, and Kubiak have all signed off on Wand at LT to start things off.

These same coaches know that time is short and every snap is precious when installing a completely new offense with many new players.

If they thought Wand was as clearly lacking as some posters have said he is, they would not have him first on the depth chart taking valuable first team snaps. They know the team has to learn to play together and needless experimenting at a key position is not something they would waste time on. They haven't given anyone a long leash - they get rid of players they don't want.

So, either the coaches are evaluating the talent correctly or the posters are from their more limited perspective.

I for one think the coaches know what they are doing.

Eric had this auora about him that gave you this feeling that we picked a very good one. I left his table thinking, that dude's line is going to be longer before his career is over.

We have to remember that even though this draft was not the way ESPN saw it, we got some very good picks going into the 3rd round. With the exception of Spencer, each one of our picks were expected to be in the first round/very early 2nd.

It was a deep draft.

Edit, Post number 400 since joining in April... yay!

One of the benefits to taking Winston is that he can sit out the first year and improve not just in the mental side of the game, but also as a player overcoming a knee injury. The longer he can stay off his knee, the better. To me, the Texans' move reminds me of the Bills taking McGahee, another Cane with a busted leg. The Bills obviously weren't drafting McGahee to play the first year. Now, Winston's injury was nowhere near as bad as McGahee's, but regardless, the time off the knee will make him a much better player. Since rarely do third-round linemen make an impact in their rookie year (i.e., play on the first-string), I think it behooves the Texans to let the man recuperate this year. Put him in next year, and celebrate a great lineman then rather than risk re-injuring a player that will probably not have as great an impact this year. My :twocents:

At the beginning of this season, Winston will be almost two full years from his knee injury. While it is conventional wisdom RB's need two years to recover fully, the same does not apply for linemen and many have made a much shorter recovery, ex. Seth Payne returning in 1 year. Winston's knee should be fine this year--he will undoubtedly benefit from added experience however.

It seems like Winston and Wiegert were made for eachother. Wiegert is pretty good and fits the system well when he is healthy. Unfortunately he is never healthy very long. This situation allows Winston to sit early and to get increasing playing time as Wiegert gets banged up (and he will). By next year, Winston should be a full time starter without having to be thrown into the fire as a rookie.

I think this is the likely scenario, and probably one that is best for Winston in the long term. Rookies on the line have a lot to learn. Mixing watching and playing could pay dividends.
