Bengals pick up QB Ragone off waivers

Wow. Good for them, and for Ragone. That was quick :shocked. The Bengals obviously wanted him really bad. He will make the team and after losing Jon Kitna he could become a #2 QB for them over Anthony Wright (he is definately on the downfall, but with his experience I wouldn't be suprised if he did stay at #2 and Ragone is #3). If Carson's not ready for the beginning of the year I imagine he might get some time if Wright performs bad.

Quick pick up:

Three-year veteran quarterback Dave Ragone, released on Friday by the Houston Texans, was awarded to the Cincinnati Bengals on a waiver claim Wednesday afternoon.

Once regarded as a solid prospect, and a player who might eventually emerge as a starter in the league, Ragone might be the kind of quarterback the Bengals have been attempting to develop as a young backup to starter Carson Palmer. He joins veterans Anthony Wright and Doug Johnson and rookie undrafted free agent Erik Meyer of Eastern Michigan on the depth chart.

The waiver claim shows there was some value there (as opposed to clearing waivers).

I'm sure he's ecstatic. He's basically going home....from OH and played just across the river .. plus he could see some legit playing time while CP is on the mend. Their backup QBs are nothing to brag about.

The Colts also put in a waiver claim on Dave, but the Bengals had a worse record, so that's where he was sent. Seems to have been some value there.

The people in Cincinnati saw Rags play all through college, so I think he'll be well received (pun intended). He was an excellent college player, and his NFLe experience couldn't hurt.

I wish him the best of luck; he was drafted into a bad situation here - bad in that it would have taken a miracle for him to get any significant playing time.

I was hoping the Texans would have ended up with Reggie. Let him do some "Slash" kinda stuff and be the #3 guy.

Good luck to big Dave. Too bad we had to play Banks at the end of the year over him....still can't figure that one out since teams may have been interested in sending a second day pick to us if he played well.

Yup, just another item that proves how bad the coaching was last year.

By that time of the year, his arm was weaker than mine. QB's that only play the regular season have very tired arms by week 17, and Ragone had to play in NFLe as well as play in practice. That is the only explanation I would have.

looks like dave will be battling doug johnson and craig krenzel for the third qb spot up here. i would like to see him get a shot somewhere.

Does anyone else think Ragone might have wanted to be waived so that he could compete for at least #2 on a depth chart? He was buried by the previous staff and the signing of Sage may have been the writing on the wall from this regime.

Good luck to Dave, here's hoping that he makes it where someone might be able to coach him up/use his talent that the previous coaches here obv never thought he could posess...

Once Palmer comes back from his injury Dave will have 0 chance of seeing the field unless Palmer gets hurt again (and the other backup QBs they have brought in get hurt/cut).

He could very well end up as the #2 QB there. In this league that is much better than #3 and frequently provides ample playing time.

Exactly!!!! I remember several of us pleading for this move last year...oh well. Good luck to him.
