What Should Our D-Line Look Like???

HeartofHouston

Waterboy
We have a lotta good D-Linemen, we have some strong rushers, some big nasties and some guys that can play all positions on the line.. So what would your.. 2006 Houston Texan's D-Line look??

Babin DE
Johnson DT
Kalu DE
Payne DT
Peek DE
Weaver DT/DE
Williams DE/DT

Antwann Peek --- Travis Johnson --- Robaire Smith --- Mario Williams

I envision a YOUNG, HUNGER, TENACIOUS Defensive Line.. Every single one of these guys are Monsters.. Imagine tryin to avoid Peek and running right into Super Mario. Or "The Bear" Smith coming atcha on a DT stunt. I would LOVE to see this lineup come Game 1.

On Paper we have the dline personnell to match up with any oline style, personnel, scheme, etc.

Teams that like to play smash-mouth football, we can smash them back by having Williams---Payne---Bear Smith----Weaver lineup.

Teams that like to pull their offensive lineman alot, we can run with them too and have a Peek----Travis Johnson---Weaver---Mario Williams lineup.

Whatever the rotation is I him sure it is going to be a NICE one.
Our Sacks #s and even hurries are just as good, should be high this year.

I'm not sure how you guys are listing the positions on the line.

One thing we do know is that Mario will primarily line up on the strongside vs. the TE. Leaving the weak end for Peek/Babin etc.

I don't think we see Mario inside much, it would be a waste of his athleticism in my book.

I think he might move inside may happen on passing downs, from time to time, allowing a speed rusher outside. Same with Weaver on the weakside. Babin, Williams, Peek Weaver getting after it on 3rd and 12 or something would be tough to defend. I see very few guards able to handle MW's burst, and any double teams would allow the other to run free. Just my thoughts Kiwi

I don't understand why we are thinking of moving Weaver to the weakside. He is not our best pass rusher and we just signed him to a big contract. He is also a little light to play DT so the only logical position for him should be LE. IMO we lose a huge advantage putting Williams on the strong side cause most decent LT can block Weaver 1on1 and then its much easier to double Williams on the strongside either with the TE or guard cause Weaver don't scare many people on the RE position. I think the best line up we can put out there is
starters
Weaver---Johnson---Smith---Williams

on passing downs

Williams---Weaver---Johnson---Peek/Babin

on short yardage

Weaver---Smith---Payne---Williams

Unless we plan on benching Weaver, Williams best serves us at the RE position. Look at the Panthers. They make Peppers a LE because they already had a good pass-rusher in Rucker who is about 6-5 270. Peppers at 6-7 285 is stronger and a better run stopper then Rucker. Instead of keeping Peppers at RE and either benching or moving Rucker to LE were he would probably become a liability Peppers was moved instead so that they can field the best 4 DL they had. We already have a big, run stuffing DE why move him to the weakside where he will most likely be inaffective?

Williams will line up weakside and go aganst the LT to sack the QB from the blindside.
Weaver is good against the run and I think most teams like to run to the right behind FB and TE so he'll be strongside. Peek and Babin will be situational pass rushers and not used on very down.

Read the interviews and reports, he himself has said he is the strongside end in our system.

Running Situations (1st down, 2nd or 3rd and short):
SDE: Anthony Weaver

Passing Situations:
SDE: Mario Williams
LDT: Seth Payne/Robaire Smith
RDT: Anthony Weaver
WDE: Antwan Peek
SLB: Shantee Orr (if they decide to bring him down to the line on passing downs too)

SDE: Anthony Weaver
DT: Travis Johnson
NT: Seth Payne
DT: Robaire Smith
WDE: Mario Williams

I missed that one, dont think that makes sense either. As the best pass rusher on the team he should be going from the other side. Isn't that where most of the best pass rushers line up?

I think Julius Peppers lines up on the other side (strong side).

The strong side varies depending on which side the TE lines up on. It may usually be the offensive right side, but certainly not always.

Apologies to those that know this, but this seems to be recurring subject.

I have not been impressed with Robaire Smith thus far. Seem like he made more plays with the Titans.

.............. coughkalucough....... Oh I seem to be coming down with something, I'm not saying Kalu will start or even make the team.... but he and Malone still have a shot at making the rotation....

Well in the 4-3 as a DT he has more of a chance to get a one on one allowing him to out muscle opposing linemen when in a 3-4 he's more likely catching double teams which is a lot more difficult.

In a 3-4 downlinemen responsiblity is more eating up space and freeing the LBs in a 4-3 it's more of gap responsibilties and penetration.. which is prolbably more of RoBear's style..
