Georgia vs LSU

wags

Veteran
This should be a great game and I hope some of you watch it. There are a few players in this game we may want to draft come April. Watch out for Thomas Davis.

Corey Webster(CB), LSU
Marcus Spears (DE), LSU
Thomas Davis (FS), UGA
Ben Wilkerson (C), LSU

Yea it will be. Im heading up to Athens on friday for it. SEC rivalry games are far and beyond any other. Especially this one. Oh by the way you have it all wrong, that is the best mascot in college football.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!

Go Tigers .. I just love LSU.
They won me over about 12 years ago with their exciting home games and the enthusiasm around Baton Rouge.

The three biggest rivalries in college football IMO are:

(in no particular order)
Michigan/Ohio State
Texas/OU
Alabama/Auburn

Princeton/Yale and Army/Navy get honorable mention but are not on the list merely because their teams suck every year.

Anyone else that claims their rivalry game is bigger just doesn't know what they are talking about.

I have been a LSU fan since the days of Billy Cannon. That goes back a lot of years. My dad's favorite player when I was small was Steve Van Buren from the Eagles. He when to LSU. That is what got me started. I have lived in the Philly area most of my life and have never been to La. Would like to see the school someday. Only know one other guy up here that is a LSU fan. Everything up here is Penn State or Notre Dame Don't like either one. The SEC is the best around (personal thinking only). Should be a great game. GO TIGERS!!!

I grew up (Cleveland) with the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry a permanent part of my life. It was a week long ritual of non-stop game preparation... and then it was a year long boasting or vowing to overthrow the next year. It never ended! I swear both states come to a halt that Saturday of the game. It's bigger then Christmas.

LSU has become my other college team. The game atmosphere in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is beyond words. They put on a show!

You are actually going to throw UT vs. OU as one of the greatest rivalries? That is ridiculous. Look im from Texas, and I am not claiming any of LSU's games as the greatest of rivalries but you shouldnt claim UT OU as one of the top three either. I've been to the red river shootout before and it isnt that impressive. It might be UT's biggest rival cause they get beaten every year, but if you want to go back in history OU's biggest football rival is Nebraska. I will give you the other two even though both Auburn and Alabama are sh** holes, but no way is UT OU up there. Heck your Army vs Navy rivalry in honerable mention is a bigger rival. You cant live in the last 5 years to determine a football rivalry.

Um...no. If you ask any ou fan they'll tell you Texas is their first and foremost rival. Bigger than former Big8 foe Nebraska and bigger than in-state upstart OSU.

Texas losing the last four is irrelevant. They won a string of four in a row before they lost four in a row. So it goes both ways. Texas also holds a sizable lead in the overall series (55-37-5).

As an LSU fan it's not surprising you weren't impressed. What interest would you have in it? I'm pretty sure if I went to the World's Largest Cocktail Party I wouldn't think much of it either. I consider Alabama/Auburn to be a great rivalry. But that doesn't mean I'd be enthralled with what went on during that week.

The game is played at a neutral site every year. Half-way between each school.
The stadium is divided in half by their fan bases.
Most of the kids playing in the game also played against each other in high school.
They have played each other 97 times. Many times, both were ranked in the top 10.
They have 10 National titles between them.

But yeah, it'd be ridiculous to mention it as one of the greatest rivalries in the country.

If you can mention another rivalry that consists of all of that (I realize some have at least one of those characteristics), I'd like to hear it.

If I ask ANY? Man it is sad that you are older than me and dont know the history of college football. A rivalry isnt decided in 4 or 5 years of hating each other it is decided over decades. The Nu OU has died in the 21st century and will not be strong again until NU gets a team together, but man how can anyone when college football is mentioned not think about Switzer vs. Osborne. Or how about "THE GAME OF THE CENTURY!!!" Back in 71. It is so easy to forget great teams when they go through slumps but every team does. The Aggies in the 80's were a power house and dominated UT but I bet as a UT fan you would say that it is just another game for UT. That they dont care. That rivalry has produced one school with their fight song saying "saw varsity's horns off", and the other with a mascott that has a name because of the 13-0 A&M prank. Wait for OU to get like they were in the 90's and UT to go through a slump and we will see how big of a rival game that is. But back to your question, to name a game that has what UT OU does. Here ya go.
Army vs. Navy is played in Pa. A neutral spot. The stadium is devided in half by fans. They have played each other over 100 times, with 6 national championships between the two. There is that, here is another that is bigger in history than UT OU. One of the greatest all time, USC vs. Notre Dame. These two teams have produced players like Joe Montana, Marcus Allen O.J Simpson, Joe Theisman, Tim Brown, and Keyshawn Johnson. It also has produced 12 heisman trophie winners and 19 national championships. My whole point in this has been that you can not base a rivalry because two teams have been playing good for a few years and say hey, that is the biggest rivalry in my state so it MUST be one of the greatest of all time. I lived in Texas for 18 years and know the importance to those two teams and even the importance that it holds for the Big 12 but to say that it is one of the greatest in college football ever, yes it is RIDICULOUS!!!

If I ask ANY? Man it is sad that you are older than me and dont know the history of college football. A rivalry isnt decided in 4 or 5 years of hating each other it is decided over decades.

First you claim that I don't know the history of college football then you go on to say that the Texas/OU rivalry has been decided in the last 4 or 5 years.

Seriously...you should've stopped after that.

But I'll give you the Army/Navy game. While it's not very fun to watch, it's still a great rivalry.

But I had to chuckle when you said USC/ND. "These two teams have produced players like Joe Montana, Marcus Allen O.J Simpson, Joe Theisman, Tim Brown, and Keyshawn Johnson."

Keyshawn Johnson!? Are you effin' kidding me!? Was he a good college football player? Yes. Does he belong on a list with Joe Montana, OJ, Theesman (yes, I realize that's misspelled...that's how he pronounced his name when he was on college but changed it to rhyme with "Heisman"), etc.? Absolutely not.

And yes, A&M is a rivalry. The record doesn't reflect it but them being the other prominent in-state university that has had some success in football make them a rivalry.

My whole point in this has been that you can not base a rivalry because two teams have been playing good for a few years and say hey, that is the biggest rivalry in my state so it MUST be one of the greatest of all time.

At what point did I use this as my reasoning?

Texas and OU have been playing good for a few years? Are you sure I'm the one that doesn't know about college football history?

First you claim that I don't know the history of college football then you go on to say that the Texas/OU rivalry has been decided in the last 4 or 5 years.

Seriously...you should've stopped after that.

Ha i love when people put words in my mouth. I didnt say that the rivalry has been decided in the last four or five years, i said that the hatred has become equally popular between these two teams in the past four or five years, and you cant argue with that, you know why? Because until the late 90's do you think that OU was pointing out the UT game on their schedule as the game of the year? No of course they wern't. Their major game year in and year out until recently has been Nebraska. It is ridiculous to say other wise becuase especially in the 90's NU was the team of the decade. And here is another dumb comment:
Keyshawn Johnson!? Are you effin' kidding me!? Was he a good college football player? Yes. Does he belong on a list with Joe Montana, OJ, Theesman (yes, I realize that's misspelled...that's how he pronounced his name when he was on college but changed it to rhyme with "Heisman"), etc.? What are we talking about here? are we talking about Montana and ND or are we talking about Montana at San Fran? We are talking about college football so as far as college football is concerned yes he absolutely deserves to be mentioned with those names. He was if not the best, one of the best recievers in USC history. What he does in his pro career has no barring in this conversation.

And how exactly can you "chuckle" at Notre Dame USC being a great rivalry game? That game has 10 times the history that UT vs. OU does. Here is a fact i bet you didn't know. Nike became what it is today because of the USC Notre Dame rivalry. The first Nike shoe was worn and promoted at this game. And laugh all you want because Notre Dame hasnt had a good team in a while but they are still Americas Dynasty for college football. That is a fact. So far in your statements you have presented nothing but biased opinions as to why UT and OU deserves to be in the top 3 in college football rivals. That is what this whole arguement is about. You dared me to find a team that has all of the credientals that is found in the OU UT game and I found you one better. If you laugh at why USC vs. Notre Dame is not a great rivalry then tell me why, and dont say because Notre Dame sucks because believe it or not, the hardest point that I have tried to make to you is that college football existed before 1998. If ya come at me with some facts then I will listen to your arguement but if ya come at me again with " But I had to chuckle when you said USC/ND" or "Keyshawn Johnson!? Are you effin' kidding me!? " then im just gonna blast ya again.

See the quote in bold? Tell me if this quote looks familiar...

It should look familiar...you said it. Or were you just pointing out to us the fans how long it's mattered to us? Because you being the outsider would know much more about our feelings than we would...right?

While you're at it...

Get educated on Texas/OU from an OU standpoint...

Is it just a "Texas thing" and I'm out of my mind? Ask an outside opinion...

Need a quote from that article? Here ya go...

"No game carries with it the atmosphere, the excitement, the energy level that the Oklahoma-Texas game does," - Barry Switzer.

Switzer...you know...head coach of the Sooners during the years you claim they were busy grabassing with Nebraska around the Big8.

Some other quotes...

"Walking down the tunnel and standing next to the guys you're about to face on the field is awesome. Then you hear the (guns) shooting and you hear the crowd " half is screaming for OU and the other half is booing. It gives you a rush." - Josh Norman, Former Sooner and current San Diego Charger

"One thing that intensifies the rivalry is that we have a lot of guys from Texas who play for the University of Oklahoma. The hype and the hoopla of the game make it very exciting. It is a very important game from the fan's standpoint, for personal pride and for the players, especially the players from the state of Texas. It is a state rivalry and I think it gets everybody involved."
- Jackie Shipp, Former Sooner and current OU assistant coach

"I had no clue what to expect. But that was one of the top games I've ever been to, as far as atmosphere. The setting makes it special. It adds a festival atmosphere to the game. Once you're in the stadium, it's so cool to look up and see things half and half, in terms of the fans." - Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN

"Right now, I think it's the best thing going in college football." - Chris Fowler, ESPN

Eh, what the hell do they know? I'm sure you could enlighten them with your infinite wisdom of this subject.

This must be what it was like for Helen Keller's teacher the first couple of weeks. Seriously, man...I can't dumb it down any further for you.

And here is another dumb comment:

What are we talking about here? are we talking about Montana and ND or are we talking about Montana at San Fran? We are talking about college football so as far as college football is concerned yes he absolutely deserves to be mentioned with those names. He was if not the best, one of the best recievers in USC history. What he does in his pro career has no barring in this conversation.

"best receivers in USC history"

Have you any idea of how dumb that sounds? Well, lessee...there's Keyshawn and then there's Mike Williams. That's two.

You're the historian...what is the nickname that was given to USC many years ago? I'll give you a hint...it's not "WRU".

Yes, I'm sure Phil Knight is up in Oregon thanking the heavens for the USC/ND rivalry. You can't be this brain dead.

And FWIW, I wasn't chuckling at the USC/ND rivalry. I was laughing at the names you provided (Keyshawn being one of them). Being the great historian that you are, I would've expected much more with such a laundry list of names to choose from.

I do recognize USC/ND as a great rivalry. But is it just the individual greatness of each school that makes it a great rivalry? Because seriously, other than each school having great histories, what makes their rivalry unique?

If ya come at me with some facts then I will listen to your arguement but if ya come at me again with " But I had to chuckle when you said USC/ND" or "Keyshawn Johnson!? Are you effin' kidding me!? " then im just gonna blast ya again.

Blast me again? I'm still waiting for the first shot.

The article above says Texas/OU ranks at the top of the rivalry chart. I disagree with that because I don't believe Texas/OU is the best rivalry in the nation (I'm in the military so I go with the Army/Navy game...'course, Nike shoes never really mattered to those guys). If it's in the top 3 is a simple matter of an opinion.

But I've presented you with the facts on what makes the Texas/OU rivalry unique (and one of the best in the nation and certainly bigger than OU/Nebraska). You were able to come up with Army/Navy and I commend you for that (and like I said, I consider Army/Navy to be the better rivalry as well). You can continue to ignore these if you want, but they won't change.

Ah my friend. Now you see that is what I am talking about. You presented facts, you gave me links to sites to prove your point, and hell ya even downgraded my intelligence a few times. My hat goes off to you for that last post, however you knew I wasn't going to just sit back and get the last word. So here we go.

First of all I would like to know exactly how I am an outsider? I was born and raised in Texas, have several great friends that go to the University of Texas. I have been to the Red River Shootout on the Texas side. So as far as an outsider, I dont what you are talking about. I go to Louisiana State but you havent heard me throw their name in the hat. I would also like to know where you got.

"As an LSU fan it's not surprising you weren't impressed. What interest would you have in it? I'm pretty sure if I went to the World's Largest Cocktail Party I wouldn't think much of it either." Why exactly do i care about the worlds largest OUTDOOR coctail party? Do you know who plays in that. Ill give ya a hint, it's not LSU.

Here is another point. This whole argument started between us because you agreed with theOGRE who said that the UT vs. OU game is one of the top 3 rivalries in the nation. My question for you is this, how can this be one of the top three rivalries in the nation when it isnt even the best rivalry for that team. I was looking up some facts to throw at you on the internet, such as opinions Americas view of the greatest rivalries in college football, and you know what consitently came up? UT vs. A&M. Over and Over again. you know what I didnt see. Not even one time. OU vs Texas. Here is a quote since you are so fond of them.

Quote: "I haven't seen anything overshadow it. Both schools have tremendous numbers of alumni within the state who get very excited about this game. The loser has to take a beating all year." --Former Texas coach Darrell Royal.
and here is the link for it.

Here is one of the top 10's I found
Here is another link for rivalries. Hey I see so well, would you tell me what #6 is?
Here is one that I stumbeled across by accident

Let me give you some quotes from that:
Most college football observers--people who have been around the sport for much, if not most, of the 20th century--would probably say that the 1971 Thanksgiving Day classic, won 35-31 by Nebraska in Norman in a battle of #1 versus #2, ranks as the greatest college football game ever played. For nearly two decades after that game, the two teams almost always met with the Big Eight's Orange Bowl bid and a shot at the national title on the line. Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer were sideline fixtures in big games, the same way Bobby Bowden and Steve Spurrier are today.

And maybe just one more:
Nebraska-Oklahoma was always the game where larger than life linemen smacked each other in the mouth in the wide-open farm country where men become men long before they trot onto a football field. If the late, great voice of NFL Films, John Facenda, had ever chosen to narrate scenes from one of college football's great rivalries, chances are that he would have chosen Ohio State-Michigan... or Nebraska-Oklahoma.
So anyway off the topic of Nu vs. OU I would like to adress something else you said. I believe it went something like

"best receivers in USC history"

"Have you any idea of how dumb that sounds? Well, lessee...there's Keyshawn and then there's Mike Williams. That's two."

Well here is another link to show you "how dumb I sound saying that"
This is a link to the top 20 schools that produced the best wide recievers since 1970
I believe you will see that USC ranks number 4 on that list ahead of Ut or OU or about 110 other teams. Please do check that out so you can see some of the other "no names" they have produced. No Names like Lynn Swann and Keary Colbert.
Oh also GREAT Herbstreit quote. I really value his opinion especially since he said WISCONSIN had the greatest student section in all of college football.
That guy will kiss the *** of absolutely any school he goes to.
And lets think about this for a second. Switzer is being interviewed by a reporter about the game between OU and UT. Ya I defiantely see him saying, you know what that one is good but let me tell you about the one I had against Nebraska. Of course he is going to say how great that game is. And you are right the Notre Dame rivalry with USC is a great one because of the history of the two programs. But that in itself makes that game great.

Well I am ending with this:
I realise how big the game is to Texas fans because A&M hasnt given them a good game since the bondfire fell so they say OU is their biggest game of the year, and right now it is, but I GUARENTEE you if A&M repeatedly beat UT year in and year out the way UT has for the past decade, the biggest rivalry for UT would be A&M. You know why? Because that game has character. It is the game that decides who is the best team in Texas. I am tired of hearing UT fans say how they dont care about the game in college station but the one they are really worried about is at the Cotton Bowl. In college football every team no matter how good they are hits dry spells. The times will change in the years to come and you will see that A&M gets all of the recruits and UT is left 2nd in Texas. Just like it was in the 80's. When that happens we will see how big the UT OU game is. I am going to pack now because I am leaving in 6 hours to go watch our biggest rival in Athens but i will go ahead and say my top 3 greatest rivals of all time in college football, and believe it or not, OU vs. UT didn't make it. The list goes.
1) Michigan vs. Ohio State
2) Army vs. Navy
3) Harvard vs. Yale
Honerable mention.
Florida State vs. Miami
Georgia vs. Florida <-------(The worlds Largest Outdoor Coctail Party)
Nebraska vs. Oklahoma
Alabama vs. Auburn
UT vs. A&M

LSU certainly doesn't look like the defending national co-champion. I picked Georgia. I think I'll stick with that.

Fred Gibson just burned Corey Webster for a 24 yd TD catch.

LMAO! The Tigers kick returner just downed the ball at the 1 yd line thinking he was still in the end zone for a touchback.

I think the Tigers have a good team, great coach but it's apparent they aren't in the chase for a national title this year. Remember they almost lost that one game against Oregon State and would have except for some flukey things happening.

They get their QB's some experience and they'll be fine. They certainly have the capacity for some heavy duty recruits wanting to come there and play for Saban.

Georgia just looked like they weren't going to be denied Saturday.

Ah my friend. Now you see that is what I am talking about. You presented facts, you gave me links to sites to prove your point, and hell ya even downgraded my intelligence a few times. I'm aware it's not LSU. Hence me referencing myself "I'm pretty sure if I went...". I didn't say anything about you going. It's an example of a fan with not much interest between two schools attending one of their games. Following along now?

Here is another point. This whole argument started between us because you agreed with theOGRE who said that the UT vs. OU game is one of the top 3 rivalries in the nation. My question for you is this, how can this be one of the top three rivalries in the nation when it isnt even the best rivalry for that team. Interesting that you would start off with this statement - "This whole argument started between us because you agreed with theOGRE who said that the UT vs. OU game is one of the top 3 rivalries in the nation."

Especially after stating this in your previous post - "Ha i love when people put words in my mouth."

Now if you could be so kind...please point out to where I said UT/OU is one of the top 3 rivalries in the country.

Here is a quote since you are so fond of them.

Quote: "I haven't seen anything overshadow it. Both schools have tremendous numbers of alumni within the state who get very excited about this game. The loser has to take a beating all year." --Former Texas coach Darrell Royal.

Need me to explain where I'm going with this one or do you want to call this a draw?

Here is one of the top 10's I found
Here is another link for rivalries. Hey I see so well, would you tell me what #6 is?
Here is one I found. Can you tell me what #3 is?

But something tells me we could find a dozen links that would back both our sides.

I don't think anybody would question that game. However...it was just one game. Would it be fair if I said Texas/Arkansas was one of the greatest rivalries ever because of their matchup in '69?

In fact, here's a quote I ran across that talks about both games...

"Many would argue that the 1971 game between Nebraska and Oklahoma was the Game of the Century, but that was helped by the hype generated by this classic game. On the key pass play of the game, it was risky for head coach Darrel Royal to make the call, but it worked out perfectly. These were two evenly matched teams playing up to their full capabilities. They also did it with the whole world watching."

This is not to say UT/Arkansas ranks up there. Just pointing out that you used a bad example.

And I also agree about OU/Nebraska. It was/is a great rivalry in itself...just not bigger than Texas/OU.

I offer a little more evidence (be prepared...it's long)...

TRENT SMITH UNCENSORED: "I hate Texas"
By Trent Smith with T. Evans
Date: Oct 9, 2003

I hate Texas. That’s right, I hate them. I always have and always will, because I’m a purebred Oklahoma kid. It’s just in my blood. Like a lot of Oklahomans, I was raised in a family of Sooner fans, but the only difference was that I was blessed and fortunate enough to get the chance to play for the team of my dreams. Most kids develop a love for their university while playing, but not me. I had it my first day on campus.

Growing up in Clinton, Okla., I idolized Brian Bosworth, Keith Jackson, Jamelle Holieway and Charles Thompson. That carried over to high school, so there was no doubt that I’d be a Sooner. But I guess that didn’t matter to Texas, because one day, an assistant of theirs showed up unannounced at my high school. When he came and got me out of class that day, I couldn’t help but notice that his polo shirt had a Longhorn logo on it. Right then, I knew I wasn’t interested, but since I was raised right, I listened to what he had to say. During that conversation, he asked me how I felt about playing for Texas and pointblank to his face, I told him ‘I’m a Sooner sir, and I could never play for the University of Texas.’ A few days later, then-Texas coach John Mackovic called and asked me to reconsider Texas. He told me the ‘eyes of Texas' were on me, so I responded by telling him, ‘I’m going to OU, you’ll see me soon enough.’ And with that Texas never called me again.

My current roommate, Jarrett Johnson, who played defensive end at Alabama, recently asked me about Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Texas. He wanted to know which of one those schools is our biggest rival. I told him each one is different, because an in-state rivalry is just that, an in-state rivalry, so neither team likes each other, which isn’t that big of a deal. As for Nebraska, that’s a rivalry formed out of pure respect for tradition and national championships, but Texas is a rivalry born out of pure emotion and hate. It’s funny, Texas fans have this acute arrogance about them, because they think everything is bigger and better in Texas. But it’s not. In fact, that’s a joke. As an Oklahoman, I’ll never tolerate anybody, especially Texans, talking down to me, because of where I’m from.

My first trip to the OU-Texas game as a player came in 1998. I didn’t play, because I was redshirting that year and we got our butts kicked 34-3. While I stood on the sidelines that game, I’ll never forget how bad the Texas fans wanted to kick us that year. The Texas fans were all drunk, which makes them even more obnoxious. They were throwing stuff at me, so I turned around and fired back with a couple cups of water. That didn’t shut them up either, so J.T. Thatcher and I filled up a cup of our own spit and threw it on them. After that game, I kept telling myself to just wait until my class played Texas, because I knew we’d raise the sinking ship out of water.

That next year was Coach Stoops’ first season at OU and somehow Texas managed to beat us 38-28. That game was the first time I can ever remember hearing the Texas fight song, which I thought was kind of cool at first until they chanted ‘Fight, Fight, OU Sucks.’ That really ticked me off and got under my skin. A couple of weeks later, I was watching them play Texas Tech and they were still saying OU sucks. That’s when I knew this rivalry was a lot bigger than I expected.

Here’s the deal about OU-Texas. Just getting to Dallas for the game is tough, because I-35’s so packed with cars that we usually have to drive on the shoulder with our police escort. But what most OU fans don’t know is that as soon as we cross the Red River and see that ‘Welcome to Texas' sign, everybody on the team makes sure they flip it the bird. I think that’s pretty cool, because it shows that everyone is in this thing together.

When you arrive in Dallas, the Texas and Oklahoma fans are either screaming for you or cussing you. They’re either giving you the number one sign or throwing up the horns at you. And when you get out, all the Texas and Oklahoma fans are pushing each other. As you walk towards the locker room, there are thousands of Oklahoma fans everywhere. They’re all going nuts. It gives you goosebumps the second you step off that bus and they don’t go away the whole game. It’s unbelievable. If you could bottle that feeling and sell it, you’d be a millionaire.

Let me tell you about ‘The Tunnel' at the Cotton Bowl. It’s always hyped up to be this special walk down on to the field, but I was never that impressed with it. Maybe that’s because it’s always filled up with Texas band people and that big cow, Bevo, which really stinks. By the way, what’s that supposed to symbolize? At least a Sooner has some type of historical name and value to it. Anyway, every time I walked past Bevo, I’d always spit on him.

But the coolest thing about ‘The Tunnel' is when you come out of it, because the OU fans in the top few rows on the tunnel side can see you coming out of the locker room before anyone else can. So when they see us, they get all fired up. It’s kind of like the wave, because it starts to echo throughout the stadium. By the time, you get to the field, it’s deafening. I always threw the horn sign down when I came out and the OU fans would go nuts. It almost makes you cry. It’s one of the most religious experiences you’ll ever have.

After losing to Texas in my first two years, I couldn’t wait to play them in 2000. I wanted to destroy them. Hell, I wanted to make them bleed. All I could think about was that group of fans behind me in 1998. I wanted them to be there for this one. And sure enough, the game turned out exactly like I wanted. We smashed them 63-14. Josh (Heupel) had a great game and we were up 7-0 on Texas before ABC even switched to the game. It was great, because we beat them by the same number of points as we beat Baylor (56-7) that year. It was just one of those magic days that Sooner fans dream about. To hand Texas one of their worst losses in school history and the largest loss in the rivalry is special to an OU fan, an OU player, an OU kid and an OU woman. It’s so awesome, because you win that game and give the state a smile for 12 more months. I loved it. When you play against Texas, you’re not just playing for the team, yourself and the pride of the school, you’re playing for an entire state. Even OSU fans root for OU to beat Texas, because they don’t like Texas either. It’s just not as big of a game for OSU as it is for us.

The 2001 game was another great one. We fought our butts off the whole game. On offense, we couldn’t really get much together. We were moving the ball and running time off the clock, but we couldn’t seem to get the ball in the end zone. But in the end, it took some good old-fashioned Sooner magic to seal the game. Roy (Williams) jumped like 10 feet in the air over some dude and the ball just kind of fluttered to Teddy (Lehman). Give me a break, that will never happen anywhere else or to any other team. It’s always Sooner magic. That whole game was Roy. The state of Oklahoma should have named a holiday for him after the way he played that game.

I’ve never been more fired up for any game than I was last season vs. Texas. I got so pumped that when I got off the bus, I threw down my playbook folder and it ripped. I also lost my pen that I’d all season. My whole career at OU was like a storybook. I caught a touchdown pass against Texas last season and it winds up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. How much more perfect can it get than that? My career at Oklahoma couldn’t have been anymore perfect, unless I got to catch the game-winner against Texas. But I’d rather beat them by 11 points like we did last season, then have the game-winning catch against them. Texas is one of those teams you can’t score enough points against. Anytime you get a chance to embarrass Texas, I say do it.

After last season’s game, I planted the OU flag at midfield, which was another one of those unforgettable experiences. Then, I ran up into the stands. When I turned around, I noticed that everyone else did too. That was really special, because to spend time with the fans who love and cheer for us is a joy. It’s great to let them smell what you smell like, touch the jersey, grab the OU helmet and then watch us hoist it above their head. I don’t care about Texas fans, but I love OU fans.

I’m not sure that I’ll be able to watch this year’s game. I tried to sit down, chill out and watch the Alabama game this year, but the second it came on, I was a nervous wreck. I think I’ll always be like that. I don’t think that will ever go away. I’ll probably throw up when OU plays Texas this year, because I’ll be so nervous for our guys. I want them to play good and beat Texas so bad. The last four years, I’ve hand in that and I could do something about it. Now, I’ll be a thousand miles away and there’s not a single thing I can do to change it. That’ll drive me crazy. Someone will drop a pass or Texas will get the momentum, and I won’t be down there on the sidelines to talk to the guys. I won’t be able to tell them to relax. That’s someone else’s job now. I’ve had to pass the torch.

I’ve got a message for Texas this year: beat us first, then you can talk. Good luck with that. OU will win again this year. Our players care too much. I don’t care what quarterback Texas has this year. Again, they’re overrated this year, just like they are every year. It always seems like they start off number one in a couple of magazines every year, but you know all is right in the world when OU is number one in the polls that count. I’m not saying I don’t respect Texas, because they have a ton of talent. That’s why it’s so sweet to beat them, because they’re not a Baylor, Kansas or North Texas. To destroy them every year, just makes us look so much better.

A lot of people ask me about Mack Brown, but I’ve never really had an opinion about him. Whenever I thought we were going to hire him after Coach Blake was gone, I was excited, but I’m so happy we didn’t. He won’t take risks like Coach Stoops. He just won’t do it. For instance, last year he downed the ball before halftime to run out the clock. That’s something Coach Stoops would never do. Coach Stoops is in it to win it. That’s part of our whole attitude. We reflect our coaches, so Mack Brown wouldn’t have fit with us. Coach Stoops doesn’t make excuses for his players. When we screw up in a game, we’re the ones that have to talk to the media about it. We don’t shy away from that stuff and Mack does. Don’t get me wrong, he’s one heck of a coach, but I just think when it comes to playing us, Coach Stoops has a mental edge on him. To put it this way, I hung out with Chris Simms at the NFL Combine in February. He’s a great guy and even Chris had some bad things to say about Mack Brown. His actual words to me at the combine were ‘I just think our coach is scared of your coach.’ That comes straight from the horse’s mouth, so there’s really nothing else I can say about that.

My final words for Texas fans are these: I told you so. And I’ll tell you again, Texas won’t beat OU this year. I just wish I could find those fans from my freshman year and show them my national championship ring. How do you like that? I think Brian Bosworth said it best and I’ll say it again, ‘Burnt orange makes me puke.’ It’s sick and so is Texas.

Well, you posted a link so guess it's fact.

BTW, with their quantity combined with quality, I'd put Florida, Ohio State and Miami ahead of USC. They didn't even list Andre Johnson for Miami.

Oh also GREAT Herbstreit quote. I really value his opinion especially since he said WISCONSIN had the greatest student section in all of college football. That guy will kiss the *** of absolutely any school he goes to.

So Herbstreit's opinion means squat but the boys over arches.uga.edu are concrete. Makes sense.

And you are right the Notre Dame rivalry with USC is a great one because of the history of the two programs. But that in itself makes that game great.

Agreed. I just don't see what makes their rivalry unique. I mean I acknowledge the greatness of the rivalry because of what it's built on (the individual greatness of each school). But there's nothing unique about it. Know what I'm sayin'?

You said earlier that a rivalry can't be decided over 4 or 5 years. Now you're using A&M's run in the 80's as an example. So are you now saying a rivalry can be built on one decade? Because outside of the 80's, there hasn't been much competition from the Aggies as far as the Horns are concerned.

Texas hold a 71-34-5 in this rivlary. Of A&M's 34 wins, 10 of them came between '84-'94 (out of over 100 years of playing each other). So what does that say about the other 90 years? During those other 90 years...who do you think represented Texas' biggest game?

I am going to pack now because I am leaving in 6 hours to go watch our biggest rival in Athens

I feel your pain, brother. I'll be experiencing something similar this Friday. ;)
