HoustonTexans.com reports the Houston Texans have signed free agent OL Ephraim Salaam (Jaguars) to an undisclosed contract.

Good signing, provides added depth. He could challenged Wand and/or Weigart for a starting Tackle position should the rookies not be ready.

I think Winston will be able to play from day one at right tackle. Weigart and McKinney will battle it out for right guard spot.

Ephraim is a solid lineman. I dont think he got to play very much last season because of Khalif Barnes but he has been good enough to start in this league for quite a long time. If he doesn't win the LT job he'll be VERY good depth on the line. I support this pick, its great to see our offensive line is not only getting better starters but better depth as well :yahoo:

Wasnt eprhraim the guy lepsis replaced on Denvers line? he was the premeir LT during their Super Bowl run... Sounds like someone with a lot of knowledge to help our lineman adjust to the new blocking scheme. I don't think he has muched left in the tank as far as starting at LT maybe RT.. since he is aging..

He is a Kubiak coached lineman, I dont believe Kubiak would've wanted him on our team if he didn't think Ephraim could help us out. He may be the starting LT on opening day. Spencer may be the starting LT though by the end of the year depending on how he develops. Ephraim is a very good guy to learn from though.

This would be the ideal scenario.

However, I think Spencer will need a two full training camps and an offseason before he is ready to take over. He has the tools and is a good athlete but needs time to improve his technique, as well as shed some weight.

Kubiak keeps on working his magic there will be no room for slackers on this team. :thumbup Looks like he is out to make sure he knows exactly what his line is capable of.

Quote from a Bronco fan on another board.

All I know is that when he was a Bronco... He straight dominated... He held Freeney to absolutely nothing a few years back.

That's probably the Bronco-Kubiak connection kicking in again

He's a product of Denver's system. In Jacksonville, I could block better than him. He was absolutely horrendous.

But since it is Kubiak that was his coach in Denver, he might be decent in Houston.
From a jag fan. Sounds like one of those Denver style linemen that can be great in a zone blocking scheme..but looks terrible in a traditional setup.

I am feeling to good about everything right now. Can someone please start a Carr thread so I can start checking myself? I am joking of course.

Don't know about overhyped bust--he was a 7th round pick. The Jags were underwhelmed by him so he got beat out by a rookie. Seems like a Denver connection and depth signing.

You're thinking about former Colorado and Chicago RB Rashaan Salaam...

Anyway, I like this pick...Depth and competition is never a bad thing...

You are correct he was a cornerstone to those old Broncos team.

Which old Broncos team? Salaam was with the Broncos in 2002 and 2003--neither hallmark years for the Broncos.

This is starting to scare me. Bob McNair is opening his pocketbook like never before, and signing anyone and everyone Kubiak wants. It also scares me because I don't know how much time Wand will get now. I really liked him, and felt he got the short end of the stick.

If Wand doesn't get any PT, it will be because he hasn't earned it...With the new staff in place, everyone will have to earn their spot on the team...Well, maybe not Carr, but that is for discussion at a different time in a different thread...I have that Coach Kubiak will put the best 11 on the field at all times...

Geez, we're gonna see a lot of OTs in Preseason. :)
a bit of competition for places never hurt anyone.

Games are won and lost in the trenches - look at what the Kubiak has done. He's brought in FA's and drafted on both lines. The pre-season competition for places will be high and if you want to play for the Texans next season you'll have to work for it.

Great insurance policy/possible starter. Once again, Kubes is showing that competition is going to be heavy at all positions this year.

Capers once said that a foundation of a team are the defensive and offensive lines. He spoke the truth, but didn't get the job done.

I like this pick up. I wouldn't be surprised if we add a couple of more veteran linemen to offense and defense before training camp and see who pans out.

Even if he doesn't start, he could be priceless in helping the other linemen with Kubiak's zone blocking. Good enough for me. Plus, we have depth at tackle now. Definately a new thing for us.

I watched him on the field and on one of the the Monday night Jaguars shows when he was in Jacksonville. He has a great sense of humor, is witty, and entertaining. You will like his personality. However, he did not pass block at all and was an under-achiever at run-blocking.

He has the size and maybe the talent. Perhaps another change of venue will help him and he will perform better in Houston.

I know he played briefly in Denver and we're hoping his knowledge of the system helps, but the Jags MB isn't too broken up about seeing him go. Quite the opposite, I'd say.
But the Jags don't use zone blocking, right? I'd say that's the key here.

You mentioned his size.....it's funny that Mario is the same size. Man, that guy (Mario) will be a beast on the defensive line.
