Williams decision was made on Thursday
They chose the best player
Signability could be a factor in the decision but wasn't the biggest factor
Both Bush and Williams agreed on 54 million dollars
the guaranteed money was slightly different
the decision was based on wanting to win and doing what's right for the Texans
1 player does not win by himself
dominant defensive lineman are harder to come by than impact Running backs
no one will out score Indy so you have to play defense (ala Pittsburgh)
Bush was not a full time player in college
Why wasn't Bush on field at end of championship game?
Earl Campbell would've been on the field at the end
If Mario wasn't in the draft, Bush was the pick
He doesn't understand why the fans don't like Carr ... works hard, tough, good kid, ....
Carr was a far better prospect coming out than Young ... says that's the thought around the league
Expects the offense to be better but says the defense must be better for them to win

Charley made the point that Earl Campbell was the best RB that Houston's ever had, but he didn't win us a Super Bowl. He thinks the Texans would be in the same boat.

Ryans will play as a rookie especially in the Nickel
the coaches have already discussed his role (which side but he wouldn't say)
Spencer & Winston have only 2 full years on offensive line
Winston was initially a TE
both have upside and aren't finished developing
Spencer will line up at LT initially
Winston will line up at RT initially
Pitts is LG initially
McKinney is RG initially
Daniels is athletic was a QB, good in motion, smart
Lundy is a good solid back
Virginia ran zone blocking scheme
he's the big back they don't have
David Anderson is quick, good hands
they're trying to pry where Ryans will play out of him but he won't budge
more college free agents expected to be signed
why didn't they trade back to 4? they had no offers .... he called the Jets 4 times and it was No everytime
it never got to a point to where the Jets would discuss terms .... Jets had zero interest
says it's very difficult in today's NFL finanacial situation to trade in the top few picks
asked about fan situation last year ... boos, empty seat ... he says fans want to win and that's the bottom line
says Bush was instant excitement but that's not so much reality
asked about moving around in the 2nd round ..... no team had interest

(end of 2nd segment)

FINALLY!! Someone asks the question about trading down.

"I called the Jets 4 times since February ... they never called us" ... " ... They [The Jets] were never interested in trading up."

I just cant figure why everyone freaked & called the Saints once he was available at the 2...

I think it's logistics .... jumping from 4 to 2 is much cheaper ... the Titans were never going to be a player for trading up ... the Saints weren't either ... this draft is so deep ... :twocents:

caller thanked him for making right pick ..... did Bush on Conan (losing comment) effect them in any way?
They chose Williams because he'll come in and work hard and get ready to play football

2nd caller seconds the first caller in that they made the right choice .... no question just a comment .... ask Manning, Leftwich, and Titans QB how happy they are about the Texans having Mario

Lance burned 1 minute pontificating about never being able to remember a situation like Young/Bush/Williams

Granato said it took "stones" to make the pick .... CC said the easy decisions would've been Young or Bush but they're not paid to make easy decisions and he has no problem defending the Williams pick

So far the calls are pro-Mario. Kinda surprised.
Pretty sure after the guy on Friday that blasted Charley about Vince & then Lance went off, they are screening for Pro Mario calls only

my suspicion is that they're screening for Texan-related questions ... not Saints or Titans questions ... :twocents:

asked about Norm Chow and the Young pick ..... he says Chow is a pro and will coach who is in place ....

Lance heard a rumor that Chow wanted to move up to make sure he got Leinhart ... Jeff F's press conference was "awkward" .....

Charley says he's never taken a 1st round pick that the coach did not want ...

says that the Texans understand the passion but they selected a great young man and we'll be proud of him and glad he's a Texan

If that @#$#$%#@sucker gave the fans 1/100th of the luvyablue fun, he'd be a legend. They didn't win it all but they sure were exciting and competitive for years. I never thought I'd be saying that about Bud Dumbass Adams team.

They way CC answered the question struck me as funny. CC said his daughter called him and told him about what Bush said on Conan. It sounded like CC was about to comment on this, then he paused.... and then said, "we picked Williams because he'll come in and work hard and get ready to play football."

Since he didn't say flat out that it had no effect on his decision it makes me think it did. My guess is the Texans didn't like the way Bush came off in his interview, and didn't like the USC problems that were popping up.

Bush pulled a stealth Eli Manning. His agent knew McNair is thin skinned. It was easy. This is about Bush getting back to LA. His agent sold him on LA in 2 years if he talks his way out of Houston.

From the Texans' point of view, the question seems to come down asking whether fans would more appreciate watching 1. A less glamorous team without flashy names that wins or 2. A list of names that probably won't win as well.

Teams have tried going both ways.

Me too. Sounds like he avoided it in order not to say.."yeah, he sounded like a punk."

He's all but saying "We just thought the guy was an a-hole, and that's why we didn't draft him."

No, it was in no one's best interest for Bush to go #2 to the Saints - RB, Segal, Subway, Adidas, etc. Two years is an eternity for sports marketing.

You have to pay close attention to the language - he didn't say he never
took a player that the coach didn't want "most of all", or never took a player that was not the coachs "first choice on the Board". Some times what they
don't say is more important than what the say. I'm sure Kubiak wanted
Mario, but did he want him more than any other player on the Board ? We may never really know, but there is no doubt that you can't go wrong with
Mario, or D'Brick, or A.J. Hawk.

As a matter of fact it was Kubiak who was reviewing film that decided on Mario. Apparently the more he watched the more excited he became. From all the interviews that I have listened to it became apparent that these picks were Kubiaks. Many of them were the results of his interviews at the combine. It was what the players said and how they handled themselves during the interviews along with film review that got them their job. Scouts may have provided initial input, but Kubiak was the one making the choices. Yes, he is like McNair and character is a big issue with him.

If you recall in the opening interview statements from the youngman at Wisconsin was the 1st 2 questions they asked are you healty and have you been arrested lately. That says it in a nutshell. The Texans are big on character.

It's interesting for Cass to note that one of the big question marks for Bush was how often he would touch the ball and his disappearance at the Rose Bowl. The big question about Mario is the consistency of his performance. Can he be productive the entire season (which is longer than the college season) and not just five or six games a year?
