While locals love Vince, the world wants Reggie

By JOHN P. LOPEZ

Whenever Bob McNair meets with the highest-ranking executives in his Texans organization, the message never wavers.

Aim for the highest standard.

As a football team, the Texans want to win a Super Bowl. As a brand name, they want to become an organization popular not just locally, but worldwide.

They want to become the New York Yankees, Manchester United or the Dallas Cowboys.

It's not something that happens in a month, a year or even a decade, of course, but it is the direction in which McNair always wants his franchise pointed.

To say they have been off course is the biggest of understatements. They have stunk like the stables at McNair's thoroughbred farm in Kentucky.

That is why North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams has no shot of becoming the No. 1 pick in Saturday's NFL draft.

Reggie Bush is rated higher than Williams as an overall prospect, but it is a close call. Until you look closer. The total package sways everything in Bush's direction for no reason more than what this franchise has been and what it wants to become.

As one Texans executive put it Thursday, "The Yankees did not become the Yankees because of their name. They became the Yankees because of players like Joe DiMaggio."

The Texans realize they need Bush not just for the games he will help the team win. They need him not just to offer the franchise more value in Forbes magazine, which consistently ranks the Texans among the top 10 organizations in the NFL. They need him for the conversations he will be a part of from Houston to Poughkeepsie to Paris.

As the Texans continue to negotiate with both Bush and Williams, holding the public stance that theirs is an either/or position, the decision has been made.

Bush is better, sure. But even if he was not, tie goes to the runner.

Bush is biggest fish
That's what has been the most intriguing thing about the whole Reggie Bush-Vince Young debate that raged locally. The argument was that Young would have been the no-brainer choice for marketing purposes alone.

Uh, not quite.

Locally and within Texas' borders, Young certainly would have given the franchise increased visibility and buzz. More local business would have jumped on board. And Young has become something of a national commodity off the field as well.

But the data Texans marketing executives check daily indicate Bush is more visible, more talked-about and more recognized than Young nationally and internationally.

The Texans subscribe to several services that rate marketability and share of a given brand name or person. One of those services regulates the number of times a person or brand is mentioned on local, national or international television.

The Texans consistently rate on the lower end. So, too, has David Carr. But Bush consistently has rated twice as high as Young and three times as high as Williams. And those numbers are more in Bush's favor on an international level.

Does that get the Texans to the playoffs? Certainly not.

But rest assured the Texans have talked about what Bush's marketing strength combined with his skills could mean to the organization. And if the wins come, playoff berths and Super Bowl appearances, McNair's goal gets closer.

Bush's former USC teammate Winston Justice, a tackle who figures to be a first-round pick as well on Saturday, called Bush "a freak athlete" Wednesday during interviews in New York.

It was his freakish abilities that got Bush into the discussion as the No. 1 pick. Other freakish abilities sealed the deal.

A few more endorsements
Advertising firms study the same numbers and trends. Before even taking a snap, Bush has earned the third-most endorsement dollars in the NFL, behind only quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

On Wednesday, he signed one of Adidas' richest shoe deals in a spectacle of an unveiling in New York. The deal calls for Bush to have his own shoe brand sold worldwide by 2007. Just like Mike.

At the draft Saturday, he will be wearing a glittery IceLink watch, part of another endorsement deal that will have his picture on advertisements worldwide. By next week, Bush is expected to sign a deal with the Hummer division of General Motors Corp.

First-week sales of merchandise featuring Bush's Texans jersey and number are expected to surpass standards set by Michael Vick and Manning. By the way, don't be surprised if Bush chooses No. 21, the sum of his hometown San Diego's 619 area code and his No. 5 USC jersey.

Once the Texans decided that David Carr was their quarterback, once they rated Bush's talents superior to any other prospect's, once they chose to pass on Young, this draft choice was over.

Mario Williams stood about as much a chance of becoming the No. 1 pick as he would catching Bush in an open field.

At least Lopez is consistent.

Get used to it???

Why is this thread necessary?

IMO these type of gloating threads should be locked. This is a Texan fan site not a R. Bush only BBS.

I look at it as news since it is from the Chronicle. If you take it as gloating, I do apologize.

This is the draft forum. Bush will be drafted tomorrow. Do you want the Vince Young threads locked too?

Vince Young said:
Is that why Deon Sanders, Dan Reeves, Michael Irvin, and plenty others want Young?
Every Texans fan calls Michael Irvin a coke-smoking idiot. But the second he says we should take Vince Young, he is a Genius? This wasn't intended to be another Vince vs. Reggie thread. Remember, it is Reggie vs. Mario now.

Atleast Lopez knows how big Man U is in the world marketplace. As for teh rest or it...meh.

And since when do we, or anybody, cares what Neon Deon and Irvin think...about anything?

I won't apologize. For what should I apologize. I think we landed the BPA. We suffered through 2-14 to get him.

Like anybody will ever confuse the Texans with the Yankees or give a rats *** about the Texans because Reggie Bush is on the team. People outside of Texas will not be attending Texan's games or listening on the radio or TV or buying Texans' gear. Not as many people in Texas will be either after this mind bending screw up. The only reason RB surveys better is because ESPN hyped him far beyond his abilities. The Texans buying into the hype is folly beyond description.

The Texans are spending $50MM+ on a running back who has no proven ability to run between the tackles at the college level behind a great o-line and putting him behind a sorry o-line with a QB who is an underachieving, overpaid, slacker head case who couldn't lead a horse to water! Somehow adding RB and an unproven head coach and picking up a few overpaid free agents at the end of their careers is suppose to make the Texans into winners overnight! You couldn't write fiction this bad and yet these guys think they are brilliant marketing and talent evaluators who aspire to be the Yankees!

By contrast, VY is a proven championship leader and a great athletic talent with an almost supernatural ability to lift entire organizations and fan bases to the highest level. He will be winning championships somewhere else while the Texans wallow in mediocrity and RB will fade from the scene as fast as he appeared. Running backs have short careers, they are more injury prone and they do not lead teams to championships.

The extreme odds are that the Texans will never win the super bowl with this decision so it is a lose lose proposition that will haunt the decision makers and Houston fans for eternity. At least by taking VY they would have improved their odds of reaching the highest level and won the hearts and minds of countless new fans. The Oilers never won a championship, but they won the hearts of Houston for a time the moment they took Earl Campbell. You do not increase the value of your franchise or win the hearts of your fans by pissing on their dreams. Bob McNair has no heart.

Lopez marketing argument is poor. The data he cites isn't relevant, as Bush playing in La, for USC, with ESPN behind him has largely influenced his profile. When he's roughing it out in Houston, only results will matter. That's why Peyton gets his loot. Furthermore, the example of the Cowboys shows that consistent success and occasional dominance build the type of fanbase the Texans covet. Emmit, Michael, and Troy weren't all that marketable or exciting, but they won. We should take the player that makes the team win.

One question for you TexasDieHard - Can you for at least a moment even pathom the possibility that VY isn't really football Jeses? Can you imagine a scenario where he does not become the "once in a lifetime" you think he is? If you can bring yourself to imagine, then what happens it turns out that way. Will it all be ok because he's from UT and Houston. That's not good enough. And the Oilers took Earl because he was the best player for them. Had he not been the great player and they won alot of games. Had he turned out to be so great, being from UT and Tyler would be an irrelevant footnote. You talk about McNair not having heart. Please, the easy desicion would be to play to the mob and let them dictate who you should pick. As long as the fans get what they want the way they want it then that's all that matters. WRONG. You have no objectivity.

Exactly. Let's take a player because they have endorsements? Foolish logic.

TexasDieHard

You seem to be taking this WAY too personally. For you, it's either VY or else. I can see that if they did take VY and he turned out to be a bust, you would just blame it on everyone else on the team, not VY.

It's funny how VY 'lifts everyone around him', yet Reggie hasn't proved he can run between the tackles. Uh, Bush has 2 national championships the previous 2 years (well, 1 and a split one). The guy has PHENOMENAL numbers. AND, he split time with another probable first round RB pick.

As much as I love VY, (I went to UT), he was bottled up quite well by A&M and by Ohio State - he wasn't running all over the field then. And I've got news for you - NFL defenses aren't going to be as porous as USC's defense was in the Rose Bowl.

Stop taking this personally. We are probably getting one of the best prospects EVER in the draft, and you are crying like we traded it for a basket of crap.

The choice really comes down to: Do you want VY all by himself, or the combination of Carr/Bush. Obviously, they want the combination, since they already have Carr. With the atrocious coaching and OL we've had, it's not quite time to give up on him yet.

Bush is the right pick for the situation we are in.

The paper balances it with this article from Justice. I agree with some above..people are going way too far with this draft. Guess what..All of these kids we are talking about are good kids and happen to also be great athletes. Just because annoying people from both sides get hard to listen to doesn't mean you should wish bad on that player. If you were the best person at your job and were a good person you wouldn't want people hating because you got what you deserve. Calm down.

Actually yes. It would clean up the entire board if we could get rid of ones talked about on these two players alone.

All that said the article does make very good business sense. We certainly don't have that player everyone knows about.

I think Dwight Freeny knows David Carr very well!

I can assume what the Texas in TexasDieHard stands for. I'm sure it's not for the state. Probably a UT fan who hasn't really cared for the Texans. Vince Young won't be drafted by the Texans. Sorry.
