After months of pre-draft speculation, the end is almost in sight. According to a source familiar with the team, the Texans are targeting Friday as the date to announce an agreement reached on a contract with USC running back Reggie Bush. The team then intends to make Bush the first selection in the draft on Saturday.

Terms aren't officially known, but the deal is expected to be for five years with an option for a sixth, the maxmium allowed for the top pick by the new collective bargaining agreement. Bush is expected to receive roughly $24.6 million in guaranteed money if the league approves the contract. The NFL Network reported on Wednesday that overall the deal is worth an estimated $49 million total over the six years.

General manager Charley Casserly said on Wednesday that the team had previously narrowed their choices down to Bush and N.C. State defensive end Mario Williams. He said the they had eliminated Texas quarterback Vince Young from serious consideration some time ago, but not until after new head coach Gary Kubiak had a chance to confirm that he was willing to go with David Carr as his quarterback. Casserly also said that the team had not received any substantive trade offers for the top selection that met their demands.

Should Bush be the Texans' first pick as expected, he will be the first running back selected at the top of the draft since 1995 when the Bengals chose Ki-Jana Carter. The last time a Houston team selected a running back first overall came in 1978 when the Oilers chose Earl Campbell.

Good to hear contract negotiations will be settled sooner than later. Way to go Bob McNair! He does not mess around when it comes to getting #1's signed before the draft...

Until the commish says those famous words, I'm going to hold out for a trade. That seems reasonable, right?

If by that you mean that his career has been extended and his usefulness will increase then I agree. 10-15 carries a game will allow him to be a more productive player, stay healthier, and thrive. I think we'll probably see him returning kicks along side of Mathis as well.

I would have preferred a trade down. But I'm also not privy to the offers or lack of. Also, it is possible, though highly unlikely, that I am occasionally wrong about things.
 
If DD stays on the roster this year, it'll be an audition year for trade offers. No way they keep all that cap money tied up in RB's.
