Thomas Jones to the Colts. . .

Tale Gator

________
Jones would be an awesome fit in Indy.
___________

RB's future may have Bears' brass at odds

Coach Lovie Smith reacted adamantly against the idea Thomas Jones could be traded, but general manager Jerry Angelo did not deny an ESPN Internet report that has linked the veteran running back to the Indianapolis Colts, who are still working to replace Edgerrin James in their high-powered offense.

Complicating the matter is that Jones fired agent Tom Condon and signed on with Drew Rosenhaus in the last week, and has stopped reporting for the voluntary offseason program at Halas Hall.

A source in Indianapolis said the best package the Bears could get would start with a third-round pick in the draft, the 94th overall selection at the end of the day next Saturday, which would seem to be a small payment for the franchise's first 1,300-yard rusher since Walter Payton.

That would be a great fit for Jones and the Colts. Not so good for us though. For a 3rd round pick would be a steal for the Colts.

Exactly, I could picture Jones putting up Edge-like numbers next season in a Colts uni. Well, he can put up those numbers in Chicago so why not Indy.

I can definitly see Jones being effective for Indy. Getting him would give them the flexibility to pass on Maroney or Addai. If they did want these RBs, they wouldn't be forced to rely solely on them to fill Edge's big shoes.

Two plays that I'm curious about are draws and shovel passes. How well does Jones do these? Also does he have the speed to get to the edge on the Colts stretch plays?

Thomas Jones has been in the league 6 seasons.... only once was he active for 16 games.... he only started two of those games..

he avg'd less than 17 carries a game up until last year, avging 20. He avg'd 3.4 ypc his first three years, 4.3 ypc his last 3 years. 28 touchdowns in 6 years, less than 200 recieving yards in all but 2 years..... and you think he will replace the Edge??

You think he'd be enough to allow the Colts to pass on Moroney & Addai??

yeah :ok:

I think a backfield with Jones/Mungro/Draftpick would be enough for the Colts. Jones may be a little injury prone, but he did well in run first / run often Bears offense. He shouldn't take quite the same beating in the Colts pass first offense.

Which brings up another question? Is Jones a good pass blocker?

Jones clearly elevated his game last season -- a touch under 1500 total yards and 9 tds. Those number of course are playing for an anemic Bears offense. If he were traded to the Colts 1500 yards rushing -- 300 receiving -- 10 + TDs would be very doable.

Lets not forget who he played for; Cardinals for 3 years, 1 year in T.B., and 2 years in Chicago. He was a #7 overall pick, they guy has some talent. Put him behind a good offense and he will shine.

I feel the same way about a guy who was picked in the 4th, and has worked his way off to starting and rushing for 2(almost 3) 1000 yard seasons behind a bad offense.

Must we make every thread about Young, Bush, and/or DD? Come on.

Well considering this thread is about Thomas Jones and the Colts; I dont see how DD has anything to do with it.

jones is definitely better than those two. he's a much better blocker too, which is what the colts will miss most from edge.

but he's injury proned......
So does David Carr....but he plays through them.

It's not like he's Fragile Freddy. He'll do alright with the Ponies, assuming, he goes to Indy.

Not to sound like Mel Kiper, but: "Trade messes up my whole first round!"

I really thought Joseph Addai would be a perfect fit there.

But he missed 9 games his first three years in the league...... how can he possibly replace Edgerin James..

they'll still need Addai.

Edgerrin James missed 10 games his first three years in the league..... how can he possibly replace Edgerrin James?

That's what I'm saying. The Colts should trade up and get Reggi Bush.. Arizona too.

Dungy says Jones trade in rumor stage

The News
Head coach Tony Dungy addressed speculation that the Colts may be acquiring running back Thomas Jones from the Bears, indicating to the Indianapolis Star that the team "investigates it all. But right now I'd say it's still in the rumor stage."

Our View
The Colts reportedly lost interest in Jones once they learned he was skipping the Bears' voluntary workouts this offseason. However, if Chicago is trying to make room for Cedric Benson the Colts would be a logical suitor. This deal could be revisited on draft day, especially if Indy gets shut out of backs they like during the selection proceedings.
