Casserly on Carl Dukes

HoustonFrog

Dallas Frog
Just listened to Casserly on Carl Dukes and it looks like VY is officially out of the mix. Not like it hasn't been expected. Unless Charlie is a great poker player, which he has shown not to be, than it is Bush or Mario. He point blank said that if Bush weren't in the draft then Mario would hands down be the #1 player taken. He said it comes down to offense and defense. He then repeated that Bush and Mario are the best two out there. Could be smoke but I just wanted to post what I just heard. Should be fun.:redtowel:

Anyone with hopes VY would come to the Texans is either not a real fan or a homer. I'm more of a Bart than a Homer.

Way to respect a different opinion...now that you've taken time out of your busy schedule to insult me, can we talk about something else?

I'd like to think that every player was in the mix at some stage and the FO has done enough work to know that who they pick is best for the future of the franchise.

Yeah, I think so. I'm pretty objective and think VY is a great kid and can be a stud. He is a leader and I think McNair has looked at his pull. But if we look at filling holes after spending money on Carr, then it is obviously Bush or Mario. I've never been a huge Carr fan but once that deal was made they basically said they would give him a spin with new tools. We will see. Honestly, Mario wouldn't surprise me since the Broncos took D the last couple of years and got RBs in late rounds.

I heard the interview. For a change, I thought Casserly was pretty candid. I'll recap some of what I remember...

The biggest things I took out of it was that they are undecided between Williams and Bush (I still think it's Bush) and nobody else is even under consideration. He said that they have Williams rated higher than Peppers coming out, and that if Bush were not in the mix, all 32 teams would have Mario listed as the #1 pick on thier board. He said Bush is the sexy pick, the one most casual fans know, whereas the casual fan will not be familiar with Williams, but that all of the scouts sure were. He struck me that he was trying to sell Williams to the listener. While I still think it's Bush, for the first time, I am feeling that this really could go either way. Also, he said they have had zero trade offers for that pick...none. CC said the only team with any real chance to deal with is the Jets. He said the Jets were evaluating all 3 QB's this week, and they could potentially want to move to #1 to ensure they get their man, but said he felt like a trade would be a longshot, and most likely they will be staying at #1 and making thier choice. He said that potentially there could be some trade action with thier #2 and/or 2 #3's however, and felt like the chance of making trades involving those picks was much higher than the #1 pick.

He was also asked if their was unimanity among him, Kubiak, etc., in the choice at #1, and who will have the final say further along in the draft. CC said it is ultiumately his choice on who to take, but that he would not take someone the HC did not want that high, and really throughout the draft he would look for a consenus before selecting, but he would essentially be the tie-breaker. He stated no final decision had been made, and discussions were onging on who the best choice at #1 would be. Again though, there are only two players under consideration, end of story per CC.

we know this is a lie. THe final say wil be one Mr Mcnair. If you don't think Kubiak has his ear you are wrong. Who ever is choosen will be unamious or it will be deicided by Mcnair and Dan.

I agree with Porky on the picks but agree with you on who has control. I think Casserly is the 3rd person on the list. I think Kubiak is being allowed to build his team an dgive his input. Dan is allegedly gone but around and McNair and Casserly have their say. Charlie is not the final say.

Thinking back to Kubiak's interview...breaking down Reggie Bush tapes. I also kinda think Carr's extension was decided before Kubiak's interview.

Reggie Bush with the #1 pick has been a foregone conclusion since the loss at SF.

FWIW, if VY ever was given any consideration by the FO, his offseason "mishaps" have probably cost him. His workout at Reliant was just for show.

Anyone one who thought he (VY) was being seriously considered is kidding themselves. Casserly needs to begin talks with Bush's people and stop all of this BS. Someone needs to tell CC his poker face is no good.

OK, who are the two talents in the draft worth taking at #1? Not much sense pimping anyone else to try and get someone to move up for. The only others are the QBs and it would be stupid to try and throw those into the mix. If a QB team is jonesing for one and want their #1 guy they will move to the 2 spot. It also puts both player contracts into play. I doubt we move from the one, BUT we might take Mario IF, IF, IF there is a real significant dollar difference, otherwise, it's Reggie IMO.

Thank you for the thorough review. I will happy with either, but still hope the Jets get in the mix and we take Mario or Hawk at #4.

To me that means if the Texans can't come to terms with Bush before the draft, then they'll draft Williams. That has probably been mentioned - or at least hinted at - in the preliminary negotiations between the Texans and Bush's agent(s), but taking it to the media means alot more if you ask me. It's pretty much a "return to earth" call for the Bush camp.

Even if Bush were to concede to our initial demads, he'd still get more money rather than being the #2 or #3 pick.

In the event we can't sign Bush before the draft, I sure won't complain. Mario Williams is one helluva prospect and definitley worthy of a #1 pick even with Bush in the mix.

Williams fills a need. Bush just gives us a decent back, and we'd have to trade one and possibly risk having to trade D.Davis for next to nothing like the Bills did with Moulds. Teams that need RBs are few and far between. Since there are a lot of them in the draft and FA market. Sure Bush is a rareity, but, so is a 202 pound RB in today's NFL.....can he be an every down back? not proven yet......Is Mario an every down lineman? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT.

Plus Mario is probably the most gifted athlete overall to come out in a long time.

Plus, he's a darn good football player.....Add it all up, and its THE best pick. The safer pick. The better fit.

Ever since the monkeys re-signed D.Carr.....it made Williams the best choice.

That is what I think too. Bush and Segal know that settling with the Texans is in the best interest because they can make the most money that way. If Mario agrees to sign for less than Bush then Bush will make far lower than he wants and that is before even factoring the no state income tax in Texas.

Charley Casserly, this is the same guy who passed on Derrick Johnson for Travis Johnson, and you guys are excited that he is passing on Vince Young and Reggie Bush???? W.T.F. o.k.

Did we not sign Weaver and that dude from the Eagles? I believe we filled the holes we had at both DE positions with these two guys. Bush is the wise pick because it gives you the GAMEBREAKER that we don't have. The defense has improved some with the FA signings they have had this offseason. Go with BUSH, Milk Weed-CC. He thinks too damn much and ends up making the worst picks since yr one. Thats with the exceptions of D. Rob, AJ, DD, and Carr. everyone else sux!

He is good, but not the most gifted athlete overall. That title falls into Bush's hands. Sorry dude, but Bush can turn a game around in an instant. Mario is too inconsistent and we have enough inconsistent players on this team. The best choice is Bush.

Whats BUSH gonna really bring to the TEXANS ?

a situational back?

at most 400 more rushing yards than DD could get.....even that's doubtful.....plus we'd still need to get a between the tackles RB. Thus making our offense more predictable.

AND if you want the best GAMEBREAKER......you'd better watch what you preach......since BUSH and CO. were all out GAME BREAKED by VINCE YOUNG.

A lot of scouts even thought Lendale White was the more crucial RB for USC that game and not BUSH.

THIS team has so many GLARING holes and RB just isn't one of them. He's a great talent, but not the best fit, and I'm not convinced he's the only GREAT TALENT in this draft, or even the TOP TALENT, like so many of you quasi-football fans preach. You need to learn the game and realize there are more positions out there besides the guys that break long TDs......every once in awhile.

I don't think VY has ever been seriously considered specifically for the risk factor in drafting him....if this team would have gone .500 or better....and less people's asses were either on the line or hadn't just been brought in then there would have been a lot more consideration. But no coach in his first year, or GM on the rocks and ready to go somewhere else anyways would make the VY pick. They know better than to draft such a risk when they know they need to get this team competing as fast as possible.....i'm sure Mcnair made that clear....along with everyone else in Houston. But some of this hate towards VY is just ridiculous....some people on this board act like he has done something personal to them or something. I understand not wanting him for the team....but i don't think anyone could honestly say that he seems like anything other than a great guy AND talent. Just not for us at this point in time. I mean being a hometown guy shouldn't sway our pick but i do think it should mean something as far as pride for such a great athlete out of this area and the way he has represented the city, state, and fans so well every chance he got even at the national level. I mean he openly talked about how much he wanted to come home and how much it would mean to him....and even though its not going to work out....people act like they are somehow mad at him because of this?! Just don't understand the hatred i guess....its just stupid really.

Why do you feel Bush is a situtional Back? Tiki Barber is the same height but lighter than Bush and he almost ran for 2000 yards. Do you really think a team will pick a RB with the 1st pick to just be a situtional back. Thats highly unlikely.

Dude, what are you smoking in Canada? Read your post again and explain why you contradicted yourself so much....

Game breaker = a guy that breaks for LONG TD's.

With Mr. Bush, all defenses must account for him every play. Leaving someone else open...

If DD is so great, he can run off tackle and bust one...

RB is a need on the Texans...

VY, yes. Reggie, hell no. I think it is a big mistake. One that we will regret much sooner than later. But, that is why I am a fan & not working for the Texans.

Mario Williams played against crappy teams just like yall say Reggie Bush did. Mario Williams also had a great deal of talent on the defensive side. I would love to have that defensive end that can smack the other teams QB for a change but I think we are going to get that this year with the switch to 4-3.

I do know that at the RB position, we have to go three to five games a season without our starting RB. We all talk about Bush not being able to take a hit but Morency doesn't ever push the pile himself either. Our offense is going to count on the running game a lot more than ever before so we need all the RB we can get. Has anyone ever thought that Lendale White was only so good because Reggie was on the field with him lined up somewhere else. Heck think of the Rose Bowl. Lendale had a shot to ice the game for them but without Reggie Bush out there Huff was able to come up and stuff the run and turn the ball over on downs.

As you can see I am torn on this issue. I just think that at #1 you go with the best player. You can't pass up super talent that can turn your franchise around. I will be happy with Mario but Reggie is who I want at #1.

The thing is that, TO ME, Reggie seems to not be so concerned with PLAYING FOR THE TEXANS so much as BEING THE #1 PICK. But with that in mind I also admire the work ethic this dude put in to be in that position over the offseason.

Mario on the other hand would probably want to prove he was worthy of the pick. Hey, lets all take a look for a while also, because one of the major concerns about our team has been the fact that we can't seem to win in the trenches on either side of the ball.

tulexan said:

Exactly. If you pick # 1, you are going to have to shell out Pro Bowl caliber dollars...If you don't want to, win more games.

Just a soapbox issue, but doesnt the NBA have this part of the draft right. The lottery is stupid, but the set and locked in cash for draft picks just makes so much sense. It is just crazy that a person that has never played a down in the NFL gets paid more than a decent amount of pro-bowl players. This should have been a hot button issue when the CBA was being reworked. I would have fought for that.

The NFL needs a rookie salary structure like the NBA. That didn't seem important to anyone during the collective bargaining agreement discussions though. It may have to be more generous than the NBA's, due to the lack of guarantees and shorter careers, but that is the same reason money needs to go to mid-career and later players. It is ridiculous that an untested rookie is frequently on of the very highest paid players on their team. Talk about creating prima donnas!

I feel better now.

Agreed, although it's better than it used to be. I think it would be great if they had a set amount for each draft slot, with maybe a plus or minus 5% each way based on position played to be negioted. That would leave a small window, and really cut down on holdouts and such. It would be indexed to inflation, so they will have to suffer like the rest of us. It would also ensure that rookies are not making more than proven veterans. Of course, in my perfect world, players would all be paid the exact same amount during the year based on position and years played, then at the end of the year, a player would could get additional bonuses based on the quality of thier play, amount of playing time, and other factors. I know, I know, impossible. I would just like to see people be paid on work actually accomplished, rather than work expected. In essence, it's similar to a lot of jobs I worked where I got a base salary + commision. I earned the base due to my overall skill and value, but the commisions were based on work that had already been performed. IE - the company was paying me on my performance and value to the company after the sale had been done and accounted for, not in some hope that I might actually make a sale later on.

Seems like alot of fans feel strongly about this rookie contract situation. I hope they ammend the CBA for this in a couple of years to really make the NFL the greatest sport it could be.

I agree with why they would not be looking QB but I'm still not sure on why people are putting lame labels on VY. He is a good kid and a great talent. I don't think there is any way that you can say that it will take him 2-3 years to be good. That is something that can't be measured. David Carr hasn't exactly wowed people in 4 years. He has had flashes. I also think that the "widely regarded as not bright" is a comple falsehood andif anything I have heard that he has been coming across well with scouts. Do I want to take him?No, but I don't think you can assume any of these things.

It has taken almost every QB in the history of the NFL 2-3 years before they were good players: Marino, Rothlisburger are, I believe, the only exceptions. Now, let's talk about how many Juniors came out and were immediately successful. Furthermore, how many juniors that push the ball, threw almost exclusively from the shotgun, and relied a great deal on his running ablility- entered the NFL and were good QBs inside of 2 years.

So like I said last night, Bush is not worth 3000 points, not according to the other thirty one teams. Someone may jump into #2 for 2600. But it doesn't look like we'll get a deal for the fifty million dollar man. Go figgure.

That is such a falsehood. Aikman got killed his first year and by year 3 was going toward Super Bowls. Year 2 he improved greatly. The fact of the matter is you can't predict it. If you could Rothlisberger would not have been picked where he was. Palmer sat a year and played. Brady was a "weak armed" 6th rounder who took over a year in. When a guy proves people wrong on each level then you don't doubt him. I also think Bush will be a stud and can be a great player. This isn't VY love. What I hate is false b.s. because people don't want to draft him. Fine, just don't make up reasons about a guy who hasn't played a snap. I've never been for drafting him but people have turned their desire to not draft him into a personal vendetta to make up facts. He has a strong arm and I don't see a push. Carr doesn't exactly have a perfect motion. No matter the motion he still got the job done and was the most accurate passer in the nation last year. He just isn't for us IMHO.

First of all, I do know the game of football. If anybody needs to learn the game, it just might be you, you are either blind to the fact or just dont understand, that the FO has filled most of the holes the team had this past yr. In all honesty, with the way you think and see things, maybe you should stay in the CFL. You would be worse than CC. You dont just pass up the most talented guy in the draft. He has great potential and would add another weapon the the Texan Arsenal. What GLARING HOLES are you talking about? I guess the guys we have picked up via FA are considered scrubs in your eyes. We do have some needs on defense and that will be taken care of in this yrs. draft. We just need to upgrade the RB pos. and i am sure we will. Defense will be fine with the additions they have made and with the switch to the 4-3 defense. You my friend have much to learn.
