What happens if Reggie Bush isn't signed before the draft?

What if the Bush camp doesn't bite on the Texans' sudden devotion to Mario Williams?

Will the Texans take any reasonable trade offer, grab another player at #1, or take Bush and risk the holdout?

Predictions, anyone?

My :twocents:

They would either pick him - and then possibly trade him (this scenario is unlikely...)

OR - they will draft Mario Williams.

If Williams is ready to play ball and Bush threatens holdout, we will go Williams. No doubt in my mind. As far as the trade, still too early to know, as nothing serious will be put on the table for a few days still.

Anyone else as excited about this draft as I am?

Thr Texans would select Bush & sign him prior to camp. I really think Bush will sign before the draft. The Texans need Reggie in tow for marketing purposes. Joel Segal doesn't want to be known as the agent who let the #1 slot slip through his fingers.

We signed Carr two weeks before the 2002 draft, but a lot of people didn't like that. We should have Reggie locked up before draft day, but probably a lot closer to draft day than we did with Carr.

I agree, there's no way Segal can call the Texan's bluff. Cause in the end I think the Texans hold the cards, and Segal is the one bluffing at the pot.

The Texans would draft Bush. Segal and Bush know that not going #1 will be a lot more costly to them than signing for a little below what they want.

I'm not so sure they would draft him and then sign him if they have given no indication of being willing to shift their position to one that the Texans are willing to swallow.

All this talk about RB wanting a pay rise on what Alex Smith got last year is ridiculous in my book and if he was determined to keep that position I would say, sorry, draft Mario and see RB's endorsements that are determined by his #1 status blow up in his face.

I am not anti-Bush, I am anti-big fat contracts that will hurt the team in the long run.

I don't care if he's signed before or after the draft just as long as he's signed. Obviously, you don't want the Texans to overpay for just one player, but you hope that it is a fair deal for both sides. The key is to get it right rather than hurrying it up.

All the leverage in signing the number 1 pick is before the draft.

Once the Texans draft the number 1 pick they start to lose leverage.

I am hoping they sign either one before the draft. Mario Williams preferably.

What makes anyone think this guy is going to be unreasonable with his contract? You guys are all talking like it's a foregone conclusion he'll want too much money and we won't be able to sign him.

The fact is most #1 picks aren't signed before the draft. Sure there are exceptions (like David Carr), but it's not a big deal. As long as he's signed before the start of training camp who cares. And we all know Bob McNair will get it done.

I have been tossing around the scenerios myself. It's clear to me that the Texans are using Williams as leverage. Now, the question is, what happens if Segal calls their bluff, and refuses to be reasonable. IMO, that is the ONLY scenerio in which Bush is not a Texan. Segal must lower his demands. If he is reasonable, it's near 100% Bush is a Texan, unless they get the Godfather deal. But if not...I think in that case, the Texans must go ahead and bypass Bush and draft Williams, or prefebaly to that option trade down for whatever reasonable offer they can get. It's not as if Williams would make me cry. How can you go wrong with either guy. As long as we come out of this with Bush, Williams, Hawk, Ferguson, or V Davis, I will be a happy camper.

Because he ALREADY has been unreasonable according to multiple media reports. That's why the sudden flirtation and buildup by the Texans of bringing in Williams, and talking him up in the media....to pressure Segal into being reasonable.

Bush is looking at a ton of endorsement deals, Adidas & Subway for starters. All tied to Reggie playing in the NFL on Sundays. The only leverage Segal has in contract negotiations is holding out for a season and re-entering the draft in '07. That's not going to happen. If the Texans think Bush is the best player in this draft, there's no reason to take anyone else with the 1st pick.

Sign me up for that viewpoint.

That being said, I really think it's too early for anyone to say Segal hasn't been reasonable. No one ever STARTS negotiations with a reasonable figure - on either side of the table.

The Texans put a premium on signing a player before the draft.

Reggie Bush has stated that he wants to make sure that he is in camp on time, but does not feel pressure to be signed up before the draft. He said he would liked to be signed up before the draft but doesn't want to do that on a discount. (no link--just the interview as I heard it on 610)

Anyhow, ran across this information and thought it was interesting:

"I don't think you can say it's a reputation," he said. "If it is, then that report in that one magazine about agents who hold their guys out the longest, what's that?"

[Marvin] Lewis referred to a report in a recent issue of "SportsBusiness Journal" that showed Condon and partner Ken Kremer of IMG have held-out 13 first-round draft picks since 1995. Agents Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes also have held-out 13.

But Condon and Kremer have far many more first-round picks, 30, than Parker and Barnes, who had 22, the magazine reported. Condon and Kremer's clients have held-out 43 percent of the time. Parker and Barnes' rookie first-round clients - including Perry - have held-out 59 percent of the time.

But agents with far fewer first-round picks since 1995 have much higher incidents of holdouts, according to "SportsBusiness Journal:"

Neil Cornrich, 5 of 6, 83 percent; Jimmy Sexton and Joel Segal both have held-out 7 of 9 (78 percent) first-round clients since '95. Carl and Kevin Poston have held-out seven of their 10 first-round rookies.

"Reputation goes both ways. It's not one-sided. Fair is fair," Lewis said.

(You can find the original SportsBusiness Journal article pretty easily but it is subscription only and I don't want to go through the bother of signing up for the free subscription).

My thinking outloud:

The Texans cannot afford to have their first pick hold out, especially if they are a player that they would like to design a part of their offense around. With a new coach, a new system and a bunch of free agents coming in, getting that pick signed means something.

And if you can't get that done before the draft, even though that is one of the privileges of the first pick, well then, that is a problem.

So, I am guessing this is why the Texans are gaming a bit. 7 of 9 is a sucko statistic.
