Packers may experience new kind of cap woes

Haha I thought this was hillarious. They may be so far under the cap that they are punished for it! This is one year after they had all those crazy cuts to save space. AND they STILL won't give JWalker any more money!!! What a terrible organization this is turning into!

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre's retirement could be a financial disaster, but in a different kind of way for the team. With his $3 million roster bonus and $7 million in salary, Favre would make $10 million this year if he plays. The Packers would save $10 million of cash if he doesn't, but that's not necessarily a good thing. The Packers have a payroll of around $76 million, but that doesn't include draft choices or any other free agent signings. Not having Favre would take the payroll down to $66 million. With the new collective bargaining agreement, teams must have a minimum cash payroll of $85.5 million, meaning the Packers would have to spend $19.5 million just to make the minimum. With the players remaining as free agents, the Packers would be hard pressed to spend the money they would need to.

Clayton is overhyping. The Packers could sign Ahman Green to a long term contract--he is currently under a one year deal. Sign Walker to a long term deal. Donald Driver is in the last year or two of his contract and could be extended. Plus, they have been reported as interested in Arrington.

Who would have thought that one player could both single handedly build and destroy one team.

Yeah but you dont want to give max deals to guys who have missed alot of time due to injuries. J Walker really had one great year and then tore his knee to hell. Ahman Green has had injuries and fumblites and to be forced to give thm max deals cause Favre held them hostage through the offseason is oh so ****ty. Favre should be ashamed of himself.

Who said anything about max deals?--just that a combination of various deals would take up the slack.

The Packers are responsible for at least half of this problem. The article says the payroll must be $85.5 mil. Including Favre they are at $76 so already significantly in trouble. Losing Favre makes the problem twice as bad, but maybe if they weren't sitting on their hands so badly in free agency and resigning their own guys such that they are about to be inviolation of league rules--i.e. if they had gone out and spent the $10 mil shortfall to upgrade their team--Favre would be more likely to come back. For example, folks think Flanigan is a good addition here--why didn't the Packers pay the moderate amount the Texans did to keep Favre's center for two thirds of his career for him?--now the entire middle of his OL has been lost over the last two off-seasons.

Just a theory: The packers have a high first round pick. While it won't make up all the money, I could see some headway with the addition of the new player, especially if they were to trade up for a Leinart/Young. They could then put Rodgers into a fight for the number 1 spot.

I don't think they are going to spend two consecutive first round picks on QBs. Especially since they have so many other holes.

I'm not a big Packer fan, but what are their holes. Last year their problem was running and WR and they have all their WRs healthy and Ahman Green is back. Their defense played really good last year, I think they were ranked 8th in the league.

They won't need to trade up to take up a huge chunk of any payroll shortage. For payroll purposes the entire signing bonus of the #5 pick--around $11-13 mil--will go on this year's payroll even though it will not all be on this year's salary cap.

Also, they don't have to overpay a lot of bad players towards long term deals... they could probably just sign a couple of high-priced 1 year contracts just to tide them over for this year and address the problem in a more practical way next season.

Like I said, just a theory. I wasn't impressed with the way Rodgers handled not getting into the Rose Bowl, and then he failed to impress me against Tech. (I am biased - to me, that was the upset of the bowl season.) Rodgers was picked up pretty late in the first round. To me, Young is light years ahead of this kid, and Green Bay is sitting in a pretty position to pick him up.

They ranked 23rd off the run, so I am seeing reports that they will try to draft a defensive player. With Williams likely gone (assuming they don't trade up), that puts AJ in their Draft Day crosshairs.

Ahman Green was horrible when healthy the past season. Dookie Navenport should get a three or four year contract, though.
