Who would be the best in the long term.

I hate to start what might become a Bush vs Young thread but here I go.

I have a question for you. Of all the people in the draft this year, 10 years from now who do you think would have left the Texans in the best situation.

One rule, assume that every guy is going to be a solid pro-bowl character player.

I have given this quite a bit of thought and I have to say Vince Young.

I say this because I don't see him leaving. Reggie Bush, Mario Williams, they could go elsewhere for a bigger market or something.

Vince Young as a hometown guy I see sticking it out.

Also given my pro-bowl conditions, a pro-bowl quarterback beats a pro-bowl anything else.... it means your winning.

What bigger market?

LA or New York come to mind.... perhaps Chicago.... somewhere he'd get more recognition.

It doesn't matter where you play. The skills the player shows are what get him recognition.

Yup--the top three QB contracts have come in Indy, Atlanta and Minnesota--none a big market. My impression is any player can be kept so long as they are given the grace of receiving credit for the highest or one of the highest contracts at their position to some degree regardless of the likelihood of their actually playing out the contract. No one expected the Titans to actually pay McNair $50 mil as a bonus as his contract calls for. Culpepper is complaining because despite his "$100 mil contract" the money is in goofy things like his playing 20% of special teams plays for $12 mil. Look at Peyton's contract and while the salary (not including prorated bonuses) is $1 mil for this year and next, then it jumps to $11 mil, $14 mil and $15.8 mil. Bet on that deal getting redone. JMO but I wouldn't bet on VY or any player (in other words this isn't a comment specifically about VY's character, etc.) giving any significant hometown discount--more like a first opportunity to come up with big jack and an ego salving press announcement.

Long term is kind of a non-factor in the NFL today. Teams can not build for a 10 year plan with free agency. Cowboys,Niners, and most recently the Pats have had a 4-5 yr success rate and then you have to reload. If you are at the top people will leave and it is not the guys at the top of the payroll that could effectively change the team. 4-5 yr blocks would be the most realistic to look at and Reggie will be more effective early with your assumption of pro-bowl status.

Mario Williams, he should have a bigger impact on a team's defense than Vince or Reggie will have on a team's offense. I don't follow the speculation of Bush and Mario leaving but Vince staying and how that speculation should impact our pick.

So Julius Peppers, a fantastic DE, has a greater impact than LT or Manning on their respective teams? Not seeing it.

For one, Peppers does have a huge impact on a game, it is not as noticable as what a RB or QB provide but it is still there, plus Mario has the potential to be better than Peppers. I should have said that Mario should provide a bigger impact for our team. Bush would be a great addition and I'm eager to see what he can do in the Broncos offense assuming we get him, but at the same time we have one good and one seemingly good RB already, and Denver has proven to be able to run their offense very effectively with multiple good RBs in the past as opposed to needing a super stud, so I think our offense can function quite well without him. As for Vince Young, I still don't see him being able to provide anything to the offense that Carr can't provide, and given that we have Carr (who IMO is a solid QB and has the tools to become a stud if put in the right situation for it, which hopefully Kubiak is working on) I don't see Vince providing much of an impact for our team, if anything I think he hurts our team for a year or two as drafting him adds nothing to the team while he sits the bench for two years adjusting to the NFL game rather than adding another key ingredient, plus I think it will create a bad situation for Carr with the fans as they will have no patience whatsoever with him and will effectively run him out of town just so they can see Vince play. As for Mario, we don't have a strongside DE that provides any threat of a pass rush, so while Weaver will be pretty strong against the run he won't get many sacks and won't draw attention away from Peek/Babin rushing from the weakside. Mario would provide a dominant pass rushing threat, which will create sacks for our weakside DE and get sacks on his own, and he should be just as strong against the run. I saw the huge disruptions he cause opposing offenses during his college career, and I think he can do that in the NFL as well, and I think adding that aspect to our defense will create a bigger positive impact on our team than what Bush or Vince would supply to our offense.
