D. Ragone

Does anyone know what his contract situation is off hand? Is there a possiblity we actually get to see what we have in Ragone in the preseason or regular season? What are some of y'alls feelings/criticizims of Ragone thus far??

Ragone has been given a low tender by the team. Barring someone signing him, the Texans refusing to match and receiving a 3rd rounder he will be playing on the tender next year as a one year deal before becoming an UFA.

Last year Denver played their 2nd QB twice as much as Plummer during the pre-season (they did not have a 3rd QB play). With them working on a new system here and improving Carr in particular I wouldn't expect that to be true. Probably won't see a whole lot of Ragone unless he beats out Sage in TC.

I just got off the plane with Dave coming back from Kentucky and he had the Texans playbook in his hands and he said that he will be a Texan next year and also said that Coach Kubiak said that he will be given every chance to win the #2 postion.

:shocked Wha?!

You mean if Vince Almighty is drafted - he may be THIRD STRING?!

:sarcasm:

Ragone, in my opinion, is the best QB currently on the Texans' roster. It's not a knock on YUGO, but praise to ROGANE. He wasn't played much in the preseason because we didn't want a Matt Shaub situation, I guess. He is calm and collected, but doesn't have the raw physicall ability. But neither did Steve Largent. Or Bernie Kosar.

I truly hope you're being sarcastic with that first statement. He's played what, 2 games for us and was awful. Sure, let's just trade Carr and hand the playbook over to Ragone. That makes sense. The NFL Europe isn't the NFL.

He played 2 games in 2003 - 2003: Played in two games and started both of them at quarterback…completed 20 of 40 passes for 135 yards with one INT

I'm serious, but it is not much of a compliment. All QB's stink their rookie years. Anyone care to remember Alex Smith? Anyway, according to many scouts, it takes 32 games to consider a QB to have reached potential. Thanks to Roethlisberger, however, that number is way too high.

You can say that all QB's stink their rookie years but there's a reason Ragone hasn't cracked the lineup since then and is still 3rd on the depth chart after the signing of Rosenfels.

considering after 4 years of play Carr managed to get 182 yds, going 19 for 36, 1 INT, 2 fumbles (he recovered himself), 0 TD's, and only (gasp) 1 sack, in the KC game last season, that we lost 45-17, it isn't too far fetched to say a rookie who had Ragones stats COULD be considered by some to be the best QB on the team.

Heck he gets my vote, till I see Rosenfels play in person at least.

Of course in games like the one I mentioned, we never saw Ragone play. Even when he should have been getting some gamefilm time at the end of that embarressment.

QB controversy?? Seems to be a legit reason to NOT play Ragone.

Ragone shoulda been #2 last year...Hopefully this year he will beat out Sage Rosenfels as #2...If he doesnt then Sage must have something goin for him.

It's the same coaching that wanted and played P-Burnt, drafted Hollings, and kept playing victor riley. Rosenfels stunk it up, but showed great improvement and outplayed Unibrow.

Also the same coaching staff that drafted A.J., Dunta, and Davis.

They made great picks, but some were just dumb luck. Would you believe that Casserly wouldn't have taken Charles Rodgers, Drew Henson, Mike Williams, Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow, or whoever had they fallen to us? Or in Henson's case, dedicated to football?

BTW, in hindsight, they look like great picks, but you don't take KR as early as the fourth. DD and Mathis had other purposes, but the main reason for drafting them is to have a KR.

You can call dumb luck on a lot of picks. Some pan out and some don't. Tom Brady in the 6th? round. Rod Smith goes undrafted. Did you mean would? have taken those players?

As for Charles Rogers he looked to be the best WR in the draft and for good reason. Same thing with Winslow. No one can expect a guy to get into a motorcycle accident to ruin the start of the career.

Some guys are just injury prone (Joppru) and can never make it for that reason. Or they just don't have the desire to be the best player in the league even though the talent level is there. (Ricky Williams)

Yes. There were several reports prior to the 2003 draft favoing AJ and a vigorous debate on a prior incarnation of this MB about Rogers vs. AJ. Top that off with AJ's humble style and his face to face meeting with the Texans promising he would not be a hold out and yes IMO the Texans would have drafted him if both Rogers and AJ were available.

So the NFLE is not the NFL, but you have no problem recruiting new players from college (which is not, I might add, the NFL either)?

In order to play in the NFLE (American player) you'll have to be signed by an NFL team first.. I would therefore deduce that any American player on an NFLE-team not only COULD play in the NFL but is already IN the NFL.

In the case of Ragone, he was even drafted to the NFL...

I'm talking about starting for AN NFL team and making a difference. Not being on the bench and starting in the NFLE

So what about college players?

College isn't the NFLE? When did this happen? I'm suggesting that the talent level in the NFLE is subpar compared to the NFL. I don't think Ragone could make the same impact he made in the NFLE and do it over here. Some college players make an impact because of their talent level. We currently have 9 players over in the NFLE and some of them are not on our active roster (Practice Roster) and therefore won't be seeing the field. And I never said that players in the NFLE couldn't play in the NFL. I also know that most of these players are drafted by teams and then sent over to the NFLE to get some playing time that they don't get in the States. In the case of Ragone, he's played 2 games for us and was sent last year to the NFLE to get some seasoning and to see how he would do. As to your question about recruiting players from college, I'm assuming you mean starting players fresh out of college? If that's the case than no, why would we have a 7 round draft.

Like so many other decisions Capers made, not playing Ragone was one of his worse decisions. First, Ragone had a great 3 yr college career (MVP/Offense all 3 yrs in his conference) and, second, was MVP in Europe-ok, I know, NFL Europe is not the 'Rolls Royce' of leagues but Ragone played well against his peers.

There have been 2 main 'knocks' against Dave, being he is not a good practice player and did poorly in his 2 starts his rookie year--give me a break!
The guy has been around 3 yrs and has only played in his rookie season? Too,as others have pointed out in one of his rookie games, he threw 2 'bombs' right on the 'money' that went through the players hands--imagine if one pf those passes had been caught!!

I'm not saying Ragone is the best QB on the team but I am saying that--if a player is on the roster (regardless of position) he should get to play. Personally, I think this was a Caper's 'thing' and hope Ragone gets a fair shot by Kubiak.:yahoo:

While that is certainly true, a pretty good case could be made thet NFLE is above the college level as almost all the guys have been selected by NFL treams because they were better players in college. So, in effect, you have somewhat of an allstar college team playing in NFLE. Not as good as the NFL, but better than college. Think farm teams in baseball.

I agree. Ragone's NFLe team would have beaten Texas this year and USC last year.
