Does anyone ever check their facts?

Relax, I'm not out to bust Texans balls, I'm just generally grumpy with reporters :)

It is when I find information like this on the official NFL-site (also in some local Buffalo newspaper) that I question these sports-reporters ability to cover anything.

"The Texans are coming off an NFL-worst 2-14 finish, and the team hasn't had a winning record in its five seasons. "

Now, how can a team that have only played four seasons have a five season losing record? Is there some hidden period, counted as a season but with no games played, or is it as I suspect, poor journalistic work.

Shame on you NFL.com for posting this...
 
when you are considered as worthless as the league considers us... there is no need to check your facts. Why? because no one really cares if they are right or wrong. Who is gonna question it? the legion of fans? yah right.

When we having 4 or 5 winning seasons.. they will start checking their facts.

Journalism, even sports-oriented, should always check their empirical data. I don't care if it's a poor Mexican family from San Antonio or the president of the US you're writing about, you check your facts :(

Exactly. Checking my facts implies that it's possible I was wrong and we all know that can't happen. That's the same reason I never chkec my spelling.

Poor, careless and sloppy. I guess they were thinking this was the fifth season coming up and that thinking somehow merged with reality to become fantasy. Thing is, the copy editors should have caught this. Then again, this is the internet -- not a place that is known for its accuracy.
 
I check facts I'm not sure about when I can find a source. Heck, I even cut and paste posts into Word to check their spelling; especially long ones when my logorrhea flares up.

Or we're talking sports premonition here. These reporters KNOW that we'll lose this one too, hence the five losing seasons :(
 
eh, could just be a typo. What does it matter anyway? Does it really matter if they typed 4 or 5? The message is the same either way (4 losing seasons in the book going into year 5). Losing teams won't get much respect. That's on us to change.
 
Maybe dude has a time machine and already knows the outcome of the 2006 season. Hate to say it, but a winning season this year would surprise me.

I agree with Vinny. While it is easy to feel indignant, it's just such a non-issue in the big scheme of things. If it's about respect...well, we've got to earn it first.
 
I'm not grumpy at all that they bring up out lack of winning seasons at all. It's a fact and therefore it should be written about. What I do NOT like is when the empirical data is plainly wrong, and reporters are too lazy to check it.

Ofcourse this could be a typo, but I doubt it since this article is almost identical to one written in a Buffalo paper, including the 5-year error.

I'm not hurt as a Texans fan, I'm hurt as a responsible human being that wants things done right.
