ESPN Insider Article - Team Needs 4/4/06

Houston Texans

Wide receiver: Andre Johnson's numbers dropped last year but his blend of size, speed and athletic ability makes him an excellent No. 1. The problem is Corey Bradford and Jabar Gaffney both left through free agency, so Houston doesn't have a No. 2 to complement him. While recently signed Kevin Walter should contribute on special teams and is an adequate sub-package possession receiver, he lacks the burst and speed of an every-down receiver. With Johnson frequently drawing double coverage and stretching the field, the Texans need a receiver who can get open underneath and produce after the catch.

Offensive tackle: This will be a need even if Chester Pitts doesn't move to guard, which is a real possibility. Todd Wade is a powerful drive blocker when he is healthy, but he has never shown great lateral mobility in pass protection and is coming off a season-ending knee injury. While Pitts has the potential to develop into a quality starting right tackle or guard, he isn't quite quick enough to hold up working against premier edge rushers, making him a bad fit for the left side. Ideally, Houston drafts a tackle who can push for immediate playing time on the left side, allowing the Texans to move Pitts.

Offensive guard: Houston's signing of Mike Flanagan allows Steve McKinney to move from center to guard where he is expected to start on the left side, but it's unclear who will start opposite him. Milford Brown signed with Arizona, Fred Weary has been inconsistent at best and Zach Wiegert is on the downside of his career. In addition, the 32-year-old Flanagan has had some problems staying healthy. If he misses substantial time with an injury, the Texans will likely move McKinney back inside, which would provide quality depth at guard. Houston needs an offensive guard who can create seams as a run blocker and, more importantly, hold his own in pass protection. One option the Texans do have is moving Pitts from tackle to guard where he is a better fit, so they may fill this need by drafting a left tackle and moving Pitts to guard. If Pitts moves, this won't be as significant a need, though adding more depth would be wise.

Dunta Robinson
Robinson
Cornerback: Dunta Robinson and Phillip Buchanon form a talented starting tandem, but Buchanon is coming off a season-ending ankle injury and there isn't great depth here. While DeMarcus Faggins is quick and has good ball skills, he takes too many chances and has problems matching up with bigger receivers. Houston needs to add a corner who has the cover skills to push Faggins for the nickel job and the size to step into the starting lineup should either Buchanon or Robinson miss substantial time with an injury.

Middle linebacker: Houston did well to sign Sam Cowart, who is expected to start. Cowart is a sound tackler who rarely gets caught out of position. Unfortunately, he is on the downside of his career and has had some problems staying healthy. That's a concern because DaShon Polk is undersized and a better fit for the outside in the 4-3 scheme the Texans are implementing. It also doesn't help that Morlon Greenwood is expected to move outside and Kailee Wong is coming off a season-ending knee injury. The Texans need to improve the depth behind Cowart and start grooming his replacement.

Other possibilities: Running back and safety.

Good post we really do need help on the offensive line and secondary( safety mostly).

I agree. It seems to me that the defensive has gone rather untouched as compared to an almost complete offensive refit. But I understand it... last years offense was enough to need that much input. I am more curious as to who will be picked in the later rounds, 3 and on, than who will be picked up first. In my opinion our 1st round pick is evident, and there are a good many 2nd rounders that are contenders.

Pitts is solid at LT. Not premier..but solid. He will most likely be starting there next season IMO. And I didnt see him getting owned by speed rushers. His quickness is actually one of his strengths I think.

We do need depth on the line.

We need a STARTING CB.. not a backup. Faggins is fine at nickle, we need someone to challange Buchanan at #2.

We could use an MLB to groom.. but we also have Polk and possibly a couple others who are candidates.

That's a good example of why I don't pay for ESPN Insider.

hey buddy lets calm down for those who do....

anyways its in the title....could have spared yourself some time? could you not?

I am really not sold on Pitts at LT. He been the best on a below average line. So the line need to be address more in the draft in the second round. Safety is my most concern if Coleman started at FS we really need a upgrade there. Don't be surprise if Buchanon prove most wrong, with more pressure on the quarterback this year and contract year he will surprise alot of people. Yes he can't tackle but if Deion got away with it PB could too.

I think we Address the tackle problem at #33 this year.. Unless the Jets just give us their 2 #1 picks this year for our #1 then we will address it at 4 with DBrick. Address CB at 29, then address more O line at 33.

Yeah, but it would create tons of VY/D'Brick threads! Anyway, I would love to see Winston at 33, but its not gonna happen. Its looking like Coolidge in the 3rd with maybe Joseph (either one) at 33...cant wait to see how it unfolds...

I never thought Pitts was that great of an LT, thatr is why I have been so stuck on Ferguson. But like you said, unless we get both of the Jets first rounders, I dont think there is a way that we dont draft bush, although, after Bushs workout, and the fact that the Jets got Ramsey, I think that there is a better chance they may move up to get Bush.

But back to the point, we really need a good DB, I like Jason Allen because if Buchanan steps up and plays up to hit potential under the new coaching, then Allen can play FS, if Buchanan still sucks, Allen can play CB.

1st Bush (RB)
2nd Winston, Colledge, Scott (OT)
3rd Hodge, Wilkins (LB)
3rd Best DB
4th Best OG

Their 2 firsts wouldn't be enough to trade down to #4, and it doesn't look like the Texans are interested in moving down that far anyways.

3. THE NEW YORK JETS LET THE TEXANS KNOW THEY TOO ARE INTERESTED IN THE TOP SPOT.

Of course, the Jets will have to package up more compensation, and there's a chance Houston does not want to go all the way down to No. 4, but here is the kind of dialogue that indicates the Jets would be serious. The Texans' top spot is 3,000 points, and the Jets hold a 2,000-point spot at No. 4. To gather up the 1,000 points, they could package the 29th pick in the first round (675) and their third (165). They are still short 160 points and could offer next year's third. No one knows where the Jets' pick will be, but the middle of the round is worth 195 points, and if the Texans thought the Jets would struggle this season, they would have some interest in a 2007 pick. It's a lot to sacrifice for the Jets to jump from four to one, but Ernie Accorsi had no trouble doing it for Eli Manning.

4. THE JETS ARE TOLD THE TEXANS DON'T WANT TO MOVE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FOURTH SPOT SO THEY CALL THE SAINTS ABOUT MOVING FROM NO. 4 TO NO. 2.

The Jets might be more excited if Houston said they were staying put and taking Bush or anyone but Leinart. Then they could turn their focus to New Orleans. New York needs 600 points to swap with the Saints (if you go by the chart), so the No. 29 slot (675 points) could be very interesting to New Orleans. At No. 4, they would still have a guarantee of securing one of the following: Ferguson, Williams, or anyone else they like. At No. 29, they will also get an outstanding athlete who should be able to help right away.

I wish they would take this deal though. I like D'Brickashaw Ferguson just as much as Bush, and their will be alot of talent left at #29. Mangold, Joseph, Cromartie, Allen, Mayby even Winston. The 2 thirds make it even sweeter.

DE Vs. :brickwall D'Brickawall :yahoo:

Post a link and expect commentary. This is a message board and that's what happens on message boards.....buddy. And if I was any more laid back I'd be comotose.

Second, ESPN Insider is one of the premier ripoffs going. I got it as part of ESPNs fantasy football package a couple years ago and was completely unimpressed. I see people react to premium content as if it's more credible. I write for a pay site so I know that's not always true. ;-)

btw, what in that article is particularly insightful to serious Texans fans? Chester having bad feet? Not. McKinney might move back inside if Flanagan gets hurt? ooohh - glad I paid 75 bucks for that. Wade is a poor pass blocker? Buchanon is part of a "talented tandem?" Dang, that's some real insder stuff there.... I thought so...

Team needs? It's been brutally obvious for a while that we need a OT, MLB, and CB. FS is still up in the air. I like CC but I'm not sold on him yet as a full time starter. That or an interior lineman could be the #1 pick of Day 2.

1. Bush
33. Youboty or Jennings
65. Scott
66. DQ or Hodge
