Takeaways from the Jags game.

Texansphan

Football connoisseur
A win is a win but it was a big letdown from the great game the Texans played against the Saints last Monday.
I said a few days ago that this Jags team has a defense and would be playing for pride.
To my eye, the defense was prepared but the O was underprepared and the Jags D stiffled them.
Carlos Hyde looked good again carrying over his nice form from game 1.
Hero of the day was Justin Reid - I hope he gets over his injury soon. Playing with heart.
I'll open it up.

The Texans had two long scoring drives, both field goals.

They scored a TD on an 11 yard drive after the defense caused a turnover (and even that required a 4th down scramble by Watson rather than good play design)

This is with everybody healthy on offense (except Miller) and the jags missing two of their best defenders (ngakoue and bouye)

My takeaways from this game:

-The offensive line still has major issues against the blitz.

-The WRs not named Hopkins and Stills are dropping too many passes.

-And last but not least, the Defense can't hold under pressure due to Crennel's calls and are allowing the WRs too much space to catch the ball and march down the field.

The good thing is that Carlos Hyde is doing a great job running.

I'm sitting right in the endzone as the offense was coming down the field at the end of the first half. I'm screaming for Bill to use his damn timeouts...and of course 'No Love.' There the team is 1st and ~5 yards with 2 damn seconds left and 2 unused timeouts. Takeaways? Send Bill O'Brien to the locker room any time the game clock goes below 4 min, and let anyone, ANYONE!, other than him manage the clock.

A sixth round rookie QB playing in his second ever NFL appearance was more in control of this game than our veteran phenom QB. He scored the only passing TD.

A coach in his sixth year commits the same fundamental, critical errors in game management he's been making every season since his first year.

Our phenom vet QB still gets sacked at a rate comparable to David Carr.

Our phenom vet QB is still sloppy and indecisive against the blitz.

We have blitz beating personnel but don't call blitz beaters.

Players often looked lost and confused.

Needing some help with my imagination. Who gets to use the picks on the OL or secondary? Same bunch that used them on TEs? Same bunch that has routinely fielded a crappy OL? Same bunch that has fielded a questionable secondary? I'm imagining ...

Fair point sir.

Agreed. We gave up 3 sacks & Ngakoue was out. Granted one sack was because $30M obviously isn't enough for an offensive Center to learn the snap count.

& Bouye is out of the game. Our #2 & #3 receivers should have had career days.

But the OL looked to be winning on the first level in run blocking. Big holes all day. We need to get better reaching the second level. Hyde & Duke don't look like they need much.

Man - I hear you all. Not an OB defender. He is definitely holding this team back. We go from a thrilling offense to a turtle offense.

But I am happy we won. Always a tough game against Jacksonville. I remember when we used to give Peyton fits, come close to beating him, but never could close the deal.

So yeah - division opponents are tough. Tougher when your coach is stupid. Doesn’t have to be this tough.

I had this down as a loss and is going 4-12. I though after the NO game we could win this in spite of OB and we did. Happy for the team.

Go Texans.

Great job to the players not giving up.

Not worried about Vegas Odds. Not worried about Fantasy points. I am worried about player health, and more Ws than Ls.

Our DBs for the most part don't seem to be comfortable attacking to make tackles. They always seem to wait for the play to come to them and I'm not talking about the cushion at the LOS.
Watson still holds the ball too long for comfort and its not just slow developing routes. Even as a smart guy, I think he has too much on his plate in this offense. He is having to make the OL reads, recognize the defense plus he and the receivers have to read the same thing. That's an awful lot for a young QB. More to do with OB than Watson.
Bill O'Brien still hasn't grown with situational awareness in game management. It seems to be translating to the non-development of the players in this area. There were times the offense should have hurrying to the LOS towards the end of the half and they didn't seem to have a sense of urgency. Yes OB should have used a timeout earlier but the offense just seemed to be ho-hum.
Maybe Romeo Crennel needs to get back into the booth so he can have a better view. For most of the game the Jags could have had easy wide open completions to their uncovered RB out of the backfield. There are way to many holes in the defensive backfield for comfort.
IMO, on both sides of the ball the players just don't seem to recognize much of anything. I understand being discipline but you also have to involve some instincts, especially as a defensive player.
On a couple of occasions the Texans did not block one of the gunners on punts, this had a direct effect on bad field position as that gunner was able to down the ball deep in our own territory.

In all fairness, that was the play design on the TD scramble. It was an option play. I'm not overly upset with the O. Jax has a stout AF defense and at least the coaching staff got a little proactive by benching Henderson.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Texans play against a hungry LAC team.

We invest two 3rd round picks and a 6. And nab Fells in free agency.

And then promptly ignore them. Imagine those assets in the oline or secondary.

Tbf, Fells wasn't ignored. He was brought in to be a 6th olineman.

And this is not to be an OB apologist. F*ck him at this point. Just want Fells to get his credit. He was moving some people around out there.

Why did we even get Duke Johnson? Or use a million picks in receiving TEs?
That's a feature of the game plan offense. The only consistency is targeting Hopkins 10-12 times a game. TEs, slot WRs and pass catching RBs are options you can consistently ignore for weeks at a time.

One takeaway I have is that the sAints are down 20-9 in the 4th to the Rams. IMO, that close Monday night game took a lot out of both teams. I think we also forgot that the Texans were working on a short week after losing a close, emotional game.

Brees injured his hand in the first quarter. That has more to do with the 20-9 score than anything that happened on Monday night.

Its no secret that OB does his best coaching when he doesn’t have time to prepare a gameplan. EX: Inserting Tunsil, Hyde and Stills inside a week into the offense and Johnson with no live game reps and offense goes into Superdome and puts team in lead with 37 seconds left.

Now that he has had a week to prepare...

Maybe. I don't like injuries as an excuse. Bridgewater was a high draft pick with starting experience and been with the team for awhile. Not exactly going to Minshew II, if you get my gist.

Yeah Brees went out with a hand Injury.

Drop off from brees to anyone is huge. Especially when he been in that system for how long?

You don’t have to like using injuries as an excuse but its hard to beat last year’s NFC Champion team on the road when your future 1st ballot hall of fame QB gets injured 1st quarter...

This is Bridgewater's 2nd year in the system, I believe. It shouldn't be the drop the Texans experienced going from Savage to Watson at halftime week one 2 yrs ago. :kitten:

They were also missing their best de and corner
