Colvin has been released

I think we need a dose of reality on what rookies can do. They almost always suck, even the first round picks.

Read Lonnie's scouting. He has a lot of problems in coverage but was picked because of size and athleticism.

The thought is he can develop over time, not in one training camp.

But wait you are also one that wanted us to go all in for Dillard. So if rookies suck so much what was your plan for protecting Watson this year? Or was Dillard the exception? Also no rookies don’t always suck unless you missed Watson entire rookie year before he went down with injury.

Just saw this come across my phone and I’m ECSTATIC!!!! GOOD RIDDANCE..... 2 years and He’s looked horrible both years..... admit the mistake and move on
Do we risk blooding LJ?
Still early in the season and I think this division is up for grabs.

Dillard would probably struggle his first year which is why a smart team like the eagles is having him off the bench to develop. Texans don't have that option

Gaine was the GM, unless you have some actual proof then shut up with this “O’Brien has made all the personal decisions since he got here” BS. Even to other people that don’t like BoB it’s starting to sound stupid.

It's what McClain said. I don't believe gaine was just doing a bunch of stuff O'Brien didn't want

So why be so hung ho to draft him if he wasn’t going to be what we needed?

What is it with you and McClain? The guy hasn’t had real inside sources since the Oilers and he’s been bitter about it since. Also you swear by him but disregard any other report, or maybe I should say any report that is different from what you believe.

Because there are more football seasons after this one and we are not contenders anyway

When I first saw the pic I thought we had lost our mind when I saw them lined up with the safeties deep and Colvin and Joseph looked like they were giving the WR extra cushion, but Joseph always lines up like that and he does it to get a view of the QB before the snap. When the ball was snapped Joseph was there with his guy but Colvin kept giving cushion even though the safeties had help over the top. He just was either shell shocked or played it totally wrong and the way they were torching him all night neither would be a huge surprise to me.

Colvin has been awful and he has basically been Jaque Reeves 2.0 in terms of being a bust free agency signing. I hope now the rookie gets on the field or we sign a vet who can actually at worst be the 3rd CB.

Not sure about that. Both Houston and kc offered him big money

Well, he aint the end-all be-all that you portray. And not worth the money KC signed him to in my opinion. I also don't believe he would have made a positive change in the game. Cook probably would have gone off much more than he did

Badger was solid last year and by all reasoning would've been better this year. Certainly would be better than the mix of - just burnt, just fired and just plain lost. Familiarity and communication being key to the positions - Badger, Reed, Kareem, and Joseph would've been quite the force - especially if we had someone to coach up our rookie to play the gift-wrapped #2 role that made AJ Bouye a ton of money. Hidden in the loss is blitz and screen cover and pitch/draw/scramble reaction - but that's bonus, we'll see the reduction later on. In this age of nickel defense, I find the loss of Kareem and Badger to be quite ... ill advised.

HB had some things going on late in the season, IDK whether it is him as a player or how you have to scheme him, but he was easily manipulated into biting upfield and getting the who D beat over the top.

It was one of those things where you couldnt necessarily pin it on him personally, but the D was getting exploited once it got figured out.

Colvin shouldnt have been carried through the offseason but at least we have set it straight.

Familiarity and Communication. "If I see this, I'm going here" - "Ok, I now know that's your reaction and know that this is how I should react". The hallmark of a great defensive secondary isn't who can cover a fast guy on the sideline, it's how the corners and safeties are able to pass off and disguise because they know eachothers' movements and the quarterback doesn't. Badger got way too aggressive expecting a familiarity with those around him that wasn't there. After last season and with another offseason, it would be there and each would be able to be more aggressive - or (like our offensive linemen) you acquire new every year and hope they can read eachothers' mind in the span of 2 months in gym shorts practices.

I don’t get it. Yeah he was really bad, but if we still have to pay his salary, why didn’t we just keep him as an emergency cb and special teamer? Or if he is too bad to warrant a roster spot, why did he make the 53?

Either something happened or this sounds like a knee jerk reaction to me...

HB really sucked in coverage. Gipson should be much better, though I would have been good with keeping Kareem as a safety he didn't have the wanted speed at CB that Roby brings

I would have gotten Dillard

Luckily we're not going to see Dillard start, so we have no idea how he would have played in that game Monday night.

Tunsil is more talented. Tunsil is more seasoned. But you think a rookie from an air raid offense would have done better? You who don't want our rookies starting on our OL is now arguing starting a rookie we didn't draft.

:ok:

I think they needed the roster spot to protect our practice squad QB from Jacksonville.

He wanted mallet and kalil...

Mallet I agree with you and I have always said BoB shouldn't be picking QBs but I don't get what your obsession with Kalil is. It cost the Texans almost nothing to bring him in and kick the tires on him and frankly by trading for Tunsil even loosing the reps didn't hurt us. The same mindset that caused them to give HB, who you seem in love with now that he's not a Texan, a one year shot is why they gave Kalil another shot. A vet that's playing for his football life and may still have something in the tank. If they had carried him on the final 53 then yeah you would have a point but they didn't so no harm done. I'd say you need to learn to let things go but seeing as you bring up Brooks and Brown every other post I know that's not happening.

He wanted mallet and kalil...

Stop with the "OB wanted Mallett" stuff. We waited all offseason so that the price could be driven down to a *conditional* 6th. IIRC the Pats opened the bidding at a 3rd. Picking a guy up for a conditional 6th is hardly a full throated endorsement of his skills. He knew the system, was cheap and had enough talent to take a chance at the right price.

OB wanted Hoyer...thats bad enough. I think Hoyer was still only meant to be a bridge until we could find a better QB (which we did...years later).

oof hard to swallow that pill with the dead money, but hey you got a ton of money to spend on marginal guys like Martin might as well cut bait with Colvin what can you do he was a bust here. damn he got paid too.

Would be nice to see our 2nd round pick Lonnie Johnson get some playing time.

Why was he on the final 53 roster? We waived Boddy-Calhoun, who was at least a servicable slot CB to keep Colvin on the roster. After one week, now he's gone?... This is a head coach using the general manager role to sacrifice a scapegoat after losing last night's game. This is not leadership, it is the worst kind of cowardice, and I am now officially an OBrien hater.

Or he is finally enforcing the 'do your job' mantra.

:coffee:

With Colvin gone, maybe Roby plays more in the slot (where he was best in Denver) and LJ gets playing time outside. That scares me, but at least LJ can get some safety help when he is on the field.

Anyone else see scenarios to fill our slot corner?

Philip Gaines signed, may be the plan moving forward....

The Houston Texans signed cornerback Phillip Gaines to the 53-man roster on Tuesday evening after a successful workout. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the club is giving the former Rice Owl a one-year contract.

The former Kansas City Chiefs third-round pick from 2014 played with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns in 2018. Over the Judson High School alumnus’ career, he has collected 138 combined tackles 16 pas breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception in 52 career games, 22 of which he started.

According to ESPN 97.5 host Jayson Braddock, Gaines is a slot corner, which is exactly the role Colvin used to play for the Texans.

Just saw this thread. I thought this would happen. That guys body language Monday night said it all. He looked like he didn’t give a damn.

But this doesn't fit the narrative around these parts.

I just can't with a few in here anymore.....Might have to follow DB, Vinny, Houston Frog, CNND and some others I've noticed that don't post here as much anymore.

I'm kind of getting to the same point. There's no logic or reason to any of it any more. This has become a political debate except about football instead of politics. Both sides just trying to hammer their point home with no regard for anything even close to truth and declaring anything that doesn't agree with them as fake. When the Saints fans thought more highly of the Texans than the Texans fans it was really telling to me.

Kalil took away snaps from better players. It should have been Tytus and Rod taking the snaps there and getting valuable experience.

He was an absolute waste. He set $2.5m on fire (it adds up) on a guy everyone knew was completely washed

He also traded keenum away for a 6th round pick. Basically swapped them.

This is this core of the issue. He's a terrible talent evaluator (as well as terrible at play calling, time management, and GMing).

Also no the trade wasn't a full endorsement of mallet, but starting him, extending him, then starting him again next season absolutely was.

Houston should be proud of mallet and hoyer

I have never understood this logic train. You disagree with someone and you can’t agree to disagree? Or just move on, or ignore that person? Instead you want to throw up your hands in defeat and move on to a group of people who agree with you? Whatever.

Completely agree with you on OB as a talent evaluator. His body of work as a playcaller is suspect (though Monday night was a big improvement IMO).

The Mallett extension was 7 mil over two years with 1.75 mil guaranteed (mediocre backup money). He looked more competent than anything we had in-house before he tore his pec, so they started him the following season. Again, hardly a full throated endorsement. The contract says to me that they did not expect him to stick around long.

I have no issue with being honest about BOBs abilities. Just want to be accurate when doing it.

It seems like every thread evolves into the same thread centered on O'Brien hate and how this team sucks. I get tired of re-discussing the same thing over and over and over. It's like Ground Hog's Day. There is very little meaningful discussion anymore about the team or the players, and when it does occur it is soon downed out by O'Brien hate. I get that you hate O'Brien, I can understand why you don't like him, and respect your right to have an opinion. I am just tired of hearing it for the millionth time and would like to talk about other issues that concern this team.
