Takeaways from the Saints game.

1. Aaron Colvin needs to be replaced by a warm body. Put in Lonnie Johnson and let him learn OTJ.
2. Seantrel Henderson is terrible at RT. Make Sharping the RT and let him learn.
.
No way Lonnie could be worse than Colvin. He and his bloated contract must go. Let the kid learn.

I'm almost there on Henderson. If it doesn't get better after next week, try one of the young OTs.

Starting to wonder what are folks seeing or holding onto old rhetoric. Watson actually DID NOT hold the ball too long last night with the sacks. Each sack he was pressured within 2-3 seconds of the snap.
The biggest problem last night was that Watson and the line weren't always reading the blitz correctly. That will get better. With time. Once upon a time, you could blitz Brees effectively.

Hard to fault Watt when it felt like we rushed three and dropped eight all night.
It's too early to predict the fall of J.J. Watt. I've seen a couple of games like that before. But this defense needs Watt to create havoc and make big plays.

14 points in 1 half is remarkable? Most qbs in the league did the same this week.
Since he mentioned the first half, let's take a look around the league...

Packers - No
Bears - No
Falcons - No
Bills - No
Jets - No
Eagles - No
Colts - No
Giants - No
Cardinals - No
Saints - No
Jaguars - No
Titans - No
Browns - No
Dolphins - No
Rams - No
Panthers - No
49ers - No
Buccaneers - No
Steelers - No
Broncos - No

So...20 of 32 teams in the NFL didn't score 14 in the 1st half Week 1.

You add that to the fact we had multiple 3rd and longs and you need your receivers to have the time to get open to convert.

I need to double-check, but I believe every drive except the last featured multiple 3rd and extremely long downs. This means the offence is not working to plan. Unless you believe O'Brien drew it up that way. The only thing saving this from being an utterly unmitigated disaster is Watson's magical abilities. Without that, or if he is diminished somehow, this becomes a bottom 5 offence posthaste.

Tunsil looked good but not great. Pass coverage was lousy. Linebackers can't cover. RB is a bright spot and Stills is a good addition. Don't know about TE, as they weren't used as targets. Worst concern is Watson. He played hurt most of the game, and how long can he last? Our kicker has some choke in him.

Many 3rd and long resulted from mostly running on 2nd and long. That urinated me off.

Some of those were runs right in the middle of the team blitzing. Then the WR screens he calls on 2nd and long as well. Those plays seemed to slow the momentum in the third quarter or the 4th. I don't remember which.

Here's a fresh take ….

OB is still OB.

How about that challenge at the end of the first half …. Why on earth did he call a time out and then chuck the red flag instead of just chucking the red flag which stops play.

The devil is in the details.
He must lack the sense God promised a goose.

The number of mental mistakes this OL makes is just inexcusable. That's in addition to seeing Kelemente getting pushed falling down on his backside numerous times and Henderson getting beat with horrible leverage. Mike Devlin needs to be fired.

I am still pissed at how often we rushed only 3 players. How the hell does that make sense against Brees when he can't throw the ball effectively more than 15 years downfield and when they just needed to get in field goal range. It's like Crennel thought they needed a TD to win. Sick of seeing Deshaun's would be winning drives in the 4th qtr getting screwed by this inept coaching staff. It's so frustrating being a Houston NFL fan.

You people crack me up. RAC calls for defense to set up to block a touchdown when all NO needs is a field goal which costs us the game yet all you can talk about is two time outs in the first half that ultimately had no affect on the game. Last night's loss was on the defense not the offense. Here's a stat I'm going to repost from the other thread.

QBs that have thrown a TD pass to take the lead in the 4th quarter and lost the game.

Tom Brady: 4 times in 310 starts
Payton Manning: 4 times in 293 starts
Joe Montana: 5 times in 215 starts

Deshaun Watson: 5 times in 25 starts

It makes me wonder if Devlin is just there in name only. Probably OB is in charge of the OL as well because I agree, Devlin should have been fired last year.

I like to start with the bad so here we go -

* I'm still wondering why they just HAD to trade Clowney this year. Bill the GM is a joke "relative to" the insistence on jettisoning Clowney. Does anyone else think we win that game last night with Clowney out there?

* Watt was bad last night. Not average - not ok. Not JAG. BAD. If that doesn't change in a hurry and with no Clowney on the other side, this is a disaster in the making on the D.

* RAC. What the hell dude? What in the name of all that is holy were you trying to accomplish last night? The game is completely passing this guy by. Sadly I say that. I have a ton of respect for RAC's career, but we need a change of play caller or a change of DC stat. That was a freaking joke.

* Colvin. What in the hell is this guy doing? How did he go from one of the best slot corners in the league to terrible so quickly? What happened? Anyone? Bueller? At this point, I'm all for throwing Lonnie Johnson to the wolves and yes, he'll probably have some big failures but at least his arrow might be pointing up. Colvin needs an apple and a road map.

* 6 sacks is obviously too many. But you can see the aestheticism in Tunsil and long term that guy will be a huge help. I think they eventually work in Howard (sooner rather than later) and perhaps eventually Scharping as well. It was a bit rough on opening day (not shocking) but I see the overall O-line arrow as up. So, It's a negative for now, but I'm hoping for better later.

The good -

* DW4 is a beast and a stud and a born winner. Never say never if he has the ball in his hands.

* Man this is hard for this OB critic to say, but OB had an excellent game plan minus a couple of quibbles, he called an excellent game. Kudos.

* I was not as shocked as some that Hyde ran the ball so well. How many times have many of us been critical of OB for running Miller in between the tackles when Miller is an "open space" back. Well, Hyde IS that guy. He's actually a better fit for what OB wants to run. I was impressed with the run blocking, but Hyde in particular really used his blocks well. I'm also high on Duke, but he needs more passes his way, and fewer runs, as he's in the Miller mold. I don't see him as a run in between the tackles guy. Still - he average 6+ yards per carry. 7.8 per carry overall. Great job guys. No complaints at all about either guy. Hope they keep it up.

I am not sure how to look up, but has Roby played slot corner before? He is more quick twitch and against some teams that have the non speed guys on the outside, Roby inside and Lonnie outside may be worth a shot. Just trying to think about options to get Colvin off the field. Scanned free agents and don't get too excited. I guess Boddy-Calhoun did not impress. Until we do something, he will be picked on over and over and he does not look up to it.

The Texans were terrible. Constantly in 3rd and long. Giving up big plays left and right They were also brilliant. Watson was 8/8 on 3rd down at one point. Key INT by Mercilus, big sack.

In the end, consistency is going to win more often than boom-or-bust, but as long as Watson is upright, they have a shot.
The Texans recorded a total of 414 yards on offense, with 180 rushing and 234 passing. It was the second-highest rushing average in a single game in team history. Not sure why you feel they were terrible, I didn't think they had a chance against the Saints, they certainly proved me wrong

I just did a quick tour of about 40 posts on the main Saints board.
They think more highly of the Texans than quite a few on this board.
They recognised it was indeed a great game of "big boy" football.
They said this is a very good Texans team.
They all agree that Watson is legit.
They said Nuk was one of if not the best receiver in the game.
Sad when another teams fans think more highly of your team than its own.
Interesting reading the comments. Worth a look.

I bet they loved how their Dline looked as well as their receivers from being able to do basically what they wanted.

Easy to be magnanimous after a last second win.

They don't know anymore than anyone on here or anywhere else. They are like any other internet message board posters: blowhards who think they know more than they actually do.

Colvin is terrible. Ginn runs 1 route and he gave that up. No jam , no reroute. They're better served playing the rookie on the boundary and kicking Joseph or the other guy inside. You can be a great defensive team without sacks. Look at the Pat's last yr or the 2000 Ravens. The Patriots last yr led the league in pressure but last in sacks.

I suspect colvin sees reduced snaps.

But it's scary he was out there. Tells me the bench options are worse

Seems to me they would be forced to be complimentary after a loss.
Or just come down on their team more.
Sounds familiar...
Look I can see why people get all busted up after a tough loss and sure the players are getting paid well.
Otoh, we get paid to do what we do too but it is still nice to receive recognition for good work from one's peers eh?

Biggest take is the defense failed us again in another prime time game. Crennel's defense is only good against mediocrity to bad teams. He chokes up against Eltie teams.

The offense had it's flaws but they put us in a position to win.

Thank you Crennel and defense for blocking another beautiful winning drive by Watson and Bill O'brien's offense .

What is it now guys? 4 games? 4 times in the Watson era, he's balled out with his teammates and put his team in position to win with mere seconds remaining and all 4 times this RAC led defense has crapped on the living room shag rug.

At some point, BOB needs to start holding RAC accountable and if he can't get it together, he needs an apple and a road map along with his buddy Aaron.

Gotten admit TB I got the slight taste of sarcasm when I read that. :spy:

5 actually, 5 in 25 starts. I'm posted the comparison in a couple of places so its floating around here somewhere but the closest one to that was Joe Montana with 5 in 215 starts.

The offense needs to stay aggressive the whole game.

No going into ball control up one score. The defense won't hold the lead.

I don't so much blame Crennel for that last play getting them into FG range. They played man and 4 of the 5 defenders had great coverage , Brees threw it to the only receiver that had any separation and it was Colvin who blew the coverage as he backpedaled 4 yards deeper than any other defender.

Here's a video link of the game highlights. At 13:46 you can see the critical error. 4 of the 5 Aints route runners are blanketed at or before the 40 - Colvin's back foot is at the 36 while his man is at the 41and a half.

The design was there to stop that play - the execution wasn't.

Colvin acted like he thought Ginn was going deep .

Guys, if the koolaide drinkers are right, then this loss doesn't matter because we're gonna be kicking ass the rest of the season anyway.

If you're like me, a card holding member of the Negative Nancy club, the game still doesn't matter because we're going to keep losing big games.

I'm just glad we have the Jaggies at our home opener to beat up on. No one in here is going to tell me the worthless Jaggies can beat us. (as long as Watson is the QB)

Like I said, they were terrible and they were brilliant. I count at least 11 times they were in 3rd-and-8 or longer. And really, about 8 of those times were 3rd-and-11 or longer. They spent a good portion of the game going backwards. You can't fight 3rd-and-long all season and expect to be great, especially if it's a result of going backwards. Like I said though, brilliant. Watson is a miracle worker and bailed the team out of those situations so many times last night. It's not realistic to expect that consistently, but I damn well enjoyed when it happened. I cussed a lot when they went backwards too.

And nothing about losing two timeouts on one challenge can be thought of as anything but terrible, or some synonym to that. Giving them a free FG attempt at the end of the game is not something I'd consider great either. That defense was awful.

So yeah, I stand by what I said.

Those guys had better coaches.

Merci had a stat line with a pick, sack, 4 solo tackles, 1.5 tfl, qb pressure etc. Not sure Clowney would have balled out more than that his first week back so all this we would have won with Clowney stuff is speculation to me. Yes, we are better with Clowney, but he would have somewhere had his 1-2 stupid plays. Also, after he blocked the Miami trade, he was not coming in, my humble OPINION

We really could use Clowny about now. As a fan it sucks that some personality conflict made us lose Clowny. I get that we probably could not have kept him long term but by all accounts before the relationship really soured Clowny was going to play for us this year on the tag. We had the money. If only our head coach could put his personal feelings aside and really do "what is best for the team".
