The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

That was more than a few years ago........~ mid 1990s. That was due to the asbestos debacle........and due to the way Lloyds liability was poorly spread through it's investors. They are now totally restructured (widely distributing risk) so that bankruptcy would virtually be an non-issue.
Wow never thought that long ago, was thinking 8-10. I did know they had recuperated

I just told someone yesterday that I didn't see Clowney showing up until week 1 and then the report came out that its unlikely for him to show up until the end of camp. I don;t blame any player who gets franchised if they choose to go this route its just too financially risky for them to risk getting injured in practice on a 1yr deal like that

The Texans have never worked the top veteran guys that hard in camp. I get what he's doing. But, I would advise Clowney to get in camp and get in football shape. Playing out of shape is more of a danger to him, long term.

I see JD holding out till game one or preseason game 4. Not playing this season does not make him healthier or make his issues go away.

OTAs and TC all serve even veterans to better get into football shape AND work on sync and timing (and improving or expanding moves)..........all points that would be important for Clowney. If he doesn't show up for these activities, his chances for suboptimal performance (especially for the 1st quarter of the season) and re-injuries/extended and accelerated degenerative injuries/compensatory injuries all rise to unacceptable levels.

What exactly are his "issues"?

So Jadeveon Clowney .. the guy who hasnt missed a game in what now 2 years? Is going to be questioned about staying in shape? LMAOOOOOO. This place never ceases to amaze. A guy who was the #1 pick, who has fought back from an injury MANY HERE said he would never come back from, HERE where you have guys are pronouncing his impending injury with glee and acting as if you are some sage shaman who can see into the future or offer any input other than an opinion ARE GOING TO QUESTION WHETHER JADEVEON CLOWNEY IS STAYING IN SHAPE!?!?? LMAOOOOOO. The guy who's been on consecutive Pro Bowl teams is going to have guys question his work ethic now? Too good!

Please God just trade this guy for a 5th rounder and a copy machine. Texans fans dont deserve nice things.

Jadeveon Clowney Update: Rumors About When He’ll Report To Texans.
Certain news stories reach a point where you’ll believe any absurd twist or serpentine bend they may take. This story about Jadeveon Clowney is not one of those stories. This story is boring, exhausting, and needs to come to an end already.

After the sides were unable to agree to terms on a contract extension, the Texans franchise-tagged Jadeveon Clowney for the 2019 season. Since then, things have cooled off and gotten constipated. Clowney will either (1) play under the franchise tag after sitting out training camp (the most likely scenario if the team doesn’t come to a long term agreement with him before camp starts), (2) get traded for a first round pick that won’t help the team this year and/or a player who can’t help the team as much as Clowney will, or (3) both sides come to an agreement that results Clowney getting extended and happy, participating in training camp, and feeling ready to make opposing offenses pay when the 2019 season begins.

Former Houston Texan Cecil Shorts III (if she thinks Shorts III is a Texan and not a Jaguar, she’s too young for you), who probably has some inside information, made a report of his own. Sports Radio 610, where Shorts announced what he heard, posted the following:

While OTAs are a voluntary program, sources close to Clowney told SportsRadio 610’s Cecil Shorts that if a deal isn’t reached by the July 15 deadline, the Pro Bowl edge rusher is prepared to sit out until Week 1.

”We should not expect him until September,” said former Houston Texans wide receiver, Cecil Shorts.”That would be Week 1 of the regular season.”

“[The Texans] are offering him a long-term deal, from what I am hearing, it’s linebacker type money and [Clowney] wants a long-term deal with defensive end type of contract,” Cecil Shorts said. “That’s the biggest difference between the two sides, right now, is linebacker money and defensive end money. What does he think he should get and what are they offering.”

Clowney is in the right on this one. He’s a defensive end, not an outside linebacker, and really he can just be classified as an EDGE. If the Texans want to keep him around long term, haggling over $2-$4 million per year really doesn’t seem like it makes much sense.

Hopefully this all gets resolved soon, especially since Clowney was rusted and invisible until Week Four last season after missing all of training camp due to his recovery from offseason knee surgery. With the Texans’ upcoming schedule, they’ll need Clowney to contribute right away

I am not sure who you are grinding on, but JDC had no contact until the season started last year and HE even admitted it takes a bit to get timing and moves and football shape (used to being hit) under his belt. To act like you come off the street no matter what you do in the gym and expect to be full sailing is full BS

Rico, since you quoted me and asked I'll respond... Briefly. You have been here long enough to know what his health issues are. You also know how to read injury thread where Doc & others have given medical opinion supported by evidence. Neither I or most here fail to recognize what JD has done. I also am honest that his deterioration does and will impact his career. Some over react saying he is worthless. I heard some radio today. You overreact to things that are acknowledged by most.

I heard on the radio fwiw that they were shopping him before the draft and they have no intention of giving him the 100 mill plus extension he is looking for

This is what we do. With or without Clowney, we're going to struggle out of the gate.
I can hope that healthy wide receivers help carry us this year when the offense does their part. That is hope. What I expect and agree with you is we struggle while we build chemistry on the OL and defensive backfield. I at least think we can hit a stride this year with the talent and athleticism assembled. It could be we have a edge as there is not a lot of tape on what RAC may do with his guys that can actually man up different, so there is that.

As stated, they should've gave Justin Houston a deal like he signed or better then trade Clowney like Seahawks and Chiefs did. Obviously teams dont have as high of an opinion on Clowney as they do Ford and Clark. No matter how good he plays the run, he was drafted #1 as a pass rushers. Right now, he's just ok as a pass rusher. He still cant bend.

This is a misconception many here seem to share with you. He was drafted to be a dominant DL which he has

i'm not so sure there is any misconception. Clowney shattered a South Carolina record for sacks, getting 13 in 2012. His 24 sacks in three seasons ranked third all-time for the school. No doubt, pass rush/sacks was what the Texans primarily saw in Clowney when they picked him #1.

We will have to agree to disagree. I don't think that they saw him as primarily a pass rusher, but as a dominant run defender that could also pressure the QBs

these are the kinds of plays I remember bringing the national spotlight on Clowney (hint: Its not a sack)

Are those guys normally drafted #1 overall?

Mario, Clowney... I'm sure we were expecting pass rushers.
There's the rub. Some mighty fine talent drafted after clowney that has gotten paid. He was top pick in fruitful draft. He wants to get paid too. Should he??? Well obviously Texans dont think so. Yet they want maximum value in trade given Mack trade. Total mess. Hes a B++ Player. But not elite.

Personally I think he should do what he has to do to get paid.

From a Texan standpoint they have backed themselves into a corner.

Texans blew that draft

They are blowing this offseason as well.

- The way they are handling the clowney situation is piss poor. Even if he does play on the tag, we may have burned the bridge between us and him.
- I won’t judge the actual players from the draft class yet, but they got jumped for Dillard. Over nickels and pennies.
- free agency was a huge bust in every sense of the word
- still have a ton of money, and at this point with nothing to spend it on that would add value to our team. The team that just lost a leg in the AFC south (oh no, billy can’t coast his way to another banner of champs of the worst division in football. Bummer, he might actually be held accountable for his horrible coaching now.)

Our offense could light it up this next season - it wouldn't take much to get back to scoring >30 points a game again.
Yes, 2018 game avg was 25.1 ranked 11th and an increase of 5 PPG would be fantastic. I'm unsure if defense can maintain 19.8 allowed but realistic at least.

If teams are drafting high in the draft, they don't care how well a guy plays the run if he's sacking the qb and knocking him to the ground. If I started naming the top flight defensive ends in the NFL, how are going to be followed by run stuffer?

I think next year this team will be in a lot of shootouts with the QBs they are facing. Add in the hope that WRs stay healthy along with revamped TE, OL and healthy Foreman and this offense could be Chiefs elite.

JJ Watt for one. If you already have one great pass rusher, you want another dominant DL that can rush the passer, which Clowney is. Not to mention he was the consensus #1 pick in 2014

I know this goes against the narrative but the thing that impresses me with both Clowney & Watt is how often they make plays on the opposite side of the line. They blow by the scrum and nail people opposite side. Doesn't show up on the stat sheet but friggin bulldog move should be acknowledged. You could make a highlight reel of those two nailing backs at or behind the opposite TE/OT.

If Clowney could only learn JJ's swim move

We've been spoiled. Cushing & Demeco were the same.

They both had what can't be measured at the combine, football instinct. They, especially DeMeco, played faster because they were half a second in front of everyone understanding what was happening.

They should have been the backbone of the D for a decade and one of the greatest pair of LBs. Just got fu@ked on injuries.

I miss DeMeco. Wish they would’ve found a way to keep him longer. He was a great mentor to Cushing and excellent leader of defense while here.

Currently LB coach for 49ers. interested to see if he rises through ranks like another smart instinctive player turned coach in Vrabel.

DeMeco knew which gap a RB was going to hit before the RB did.

I'm not big on claiming great players will make coaches. The two I have seen from the Texans are Aaron Glenn & DeMeco. Maybe AJ, he's not a natural speaker but he put so much into refining his craft over the years he may be able to teach it as well.

Glenn used to huddle up the DBs between series and school them even when it wasn't his job. Dunta's rookie season you'd always see Glenn on the sideline hands illustrating like a fighter pilot.

Guys who are students of the game can become coaches. Just got by on athleticism, even if great, not so much. You can't teach "run faster." Glenn absolutely could teach how to rub a WR and not draw a flag. Little dude could have his head looking at the QB while forcing the WR to the sideline. Inside hand on hip just nudging, then elbow coming up "going for the ball." What, who wree?

Glenn is one my all time favorite Texans players. He was a bright point when there weren't many for the team.

He won the Steelers game almost alone.

But he really impressed me talking to Dunta.

Also, and I think but don't know, he taught AJ, go talk to the refs. Glenn and then AJ would talk to the refs. Watching on TV you wouldn't see that. Glenn played the line of PI hard but the refs liked him.

Thanks to that dirty loser Matt Slauson and that careless dildo Jamaal Charles.

Ruined a Hall of Fame career.
