McClain: Texans' first steps in reshaping offensive line
John McClain , Houston Chronicle May 14, Updated: May 14, 2019 11:03 a.m.
Right tackle Seantrel Henderson, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the first quarter of the first game at New England last season, has been cleared to participate in OTAs. He'll be trying to hold off the competition from rookie Max Scharping, the second-round draft choice.
Julién Davenport, the returning starter at left tackle, enters his third season and is trying to withstand the challenge of first-round pick Tytus Howard and veteran Matt Kalil, who signed as a free agent. Kalil, who missed last season at Carolina because of a knee injury, is being brought along slowly until he's 100 percent and cleared to play.
That's five tackles for two starting positions, including a swing tackle who can play both sides and be active on game days.
Howard and Scharping started on both sides in college. Depending on how he develops and how Henderson performs, Scharping could get a chance to compete for a starting job at guard.
The starting guards from last season, Senio Kelemete (left side) and Zach Fulton (right) are returning. Matinas Rankin, a third-round pick last year, played tackle and guard as a rookie. He's going to compete for a starting job at left guard.
Greg Mancz returns as the backup center who also can play guard. He's been a reliable starter when pressed into service. He was active as the swing center/guard because he can play both positions.
