The players are trickling back into town. The first team meeting is Monday, as well as the start of mandatory workouts. Things will be shaking at Reliant next week, even if we fans won't see it.
 
I expect this will be pretty tame. Mostly introductions and discussions of the "big plan." The great thing for the Texans will be walking into the room with Kubiak and Mike Sherman standing there. Forget every other move they have made or will make, Kubiak and Sherman are the two biggest and best moves they have ever made.

Yeah.

It's about restoring faith. You have to have faith that what you are doing will succeed. Nobody ever knows for sure that a new system will work, but confidence that it will really makes a difference.

It's about setting expectations. No two coaches do everything the same. So the players are gonna find out what they are expected to do.

It's about creating trust--that if the players do all they are supposed to do, the coaches will put them in a position to succeed.

It's about getting guys fired up. Yeah, it is their job but it is FOOTBALL. A game of aggression and emotion. They aren't robots and having to slog through last season had to be difficult. It was amazing that Capers was able to keep all that discontent bottled up for most of the season, but sure enough, after it was over, the unhappiness with the schemes bubbled up.

The Texans fan base also needs our faith restored, our expectations changed, our trust restored and our enthusiasm rekindled. A season like the last one really makes people sour, and the best thing for this team would be to get the fanbase out of its reflexive pessimism. Winning, of course, does that better than anything, but there are other ways that can help fuel winning.

One of the best things that Mack Brown did at Texas when he first came to Texas was change his expectations for the fans. He wanted them to wear their colors and show up early and stay late. Though the fan base was certainly pretty good before Mack showed up, after Mack, you could tell the difference in energy in the stands.

The best selling point that the Aggies have is that their fan base is supportive. They brainwarsh their Freshman right away.

I know this might be a little to rah rah of a suggestion for some, but right now, Gary Kubiak has a lot of stored good will and I am hoping he uses it to reach out to the fans and ask them to help. Reliant Stadium needs to get REALLY loud again. And that the Texans should redouble their efforts to reach out to fans with this new start.

I think these will be 3 strong points in the meeting.

1) Let the players know what is expected of them and let them know they will be accountable to meeting those expectations.

2) This is a major point. Let them know there will be a system put in place to fit them and their strengths and weaknesses.

3) This is definitely something the new coaching staff has on their radar. They'll let the players know there will be less thinking (reading and reacting) and more taking the game to the other team. Let them react.



I think they'll be telling the players (like the o-lineman) what positions they'll be competing for too.
 
well it's encouraging that the players are meeting on their own but i would have prefered to hear that carr and johnson were constantly throwing the ball around together...they both need to be working together to add to their chemistry on the field...as for kubiak and sherman...the best thing IMO they can tell this team is forget last year...forget everything coach capers ever said...we're gonna win here and winning is all we need to be thinking about...amen

So far, at any press conference Kubiak has held there has been a noteable absense of a note pad. Perhaps we should buy one and send it to him so he can become an acomplished coach.

Why would HE need one at a press conference? Because the press is so brilliant he needs to take notes from them on how to do his job?

I think you got it backwards - the press takes notes to write their stories. He is the one giving the information.

I think you are missing an inside joke here. Capers was famous for the notepad he wrote in during games. It was a frequent topic of scorn - what is he writing in the book?

It was funny the first few times, but the 11,294th post was a little redundant - please don't add to them here! :eek:

I still remember the hamburgers explanation, that one was a classic.
 
I could not agree more that it's about restoring faith in the players and the fan base but the Texans are not taking the obvious steps that would do both. The Texans need a fresh start and that includes inspirational leadership on the field. However, for reasons beyond any rational comprehension, they are sticking with a guy at quarterback who has been a marginal player and a complete bust as a leader and who has squandered all the fan and player good will in the process. carr will never inpire anything but despair and amazement that anyone could be dumb enough to continue to pay him countless million of dollars even though he has never shown any flashes of being a top tier NFL QB.

Even more amazing, is that fate has provided the Texans with the chance to ditch carr and draft a QB who is a proven inspirational leader with outstanding athletic ability who could immediately demostrate that the Texans are back on the right track. VY taking the field for the Texans would inspire people all over Texas (including countless disaffected Cowgirl fans) to embrace the Texans as their team and to forgive the countless mistakes of the past and the building process that the team as a whole will be going through for several years because of the Texans endless personnel mistakes.

Unbelievably, McNair ignores the huge opportunity VY presents because he can't accept the fact that he blew the carr pick and a boat load of cash on a guy that has ZERO potential to inspire anyone in a positive way. It is sort of like watching a trainwreck about to happen and not being able to do anything about it. Its a disaster about to happen that is freakishly fascinating in its abject stupidity. The only positive that will come of McNair's folly will be the sick momentary adrenaline collapse into astonishment on draft day that anyone could be dumb enough to pass on the VY opportunity to emotionally and spiritually repair this trainwreck of a franchise with a guy that also happens to be an outstanding athlete, and a proven championship leader with unlimited upside potential.
 
ok we have a new staff, some new faces, the draft is coming up, and i'm going out so what could be better, than knowing the start of pre season football is just right around the corner. :yahoo:

It's going to be hard to screw up the draft, and because of that I can't wait to see who we get.
