We're saying the same thing.
I'm adding imo we'll never be the team FAs want to play for (outside of outbidding everyone else) if we pay mediocre players top contracts.
These one year deals are more conducive to getting us there because we are actually getting talented players much closer to their real value, if they work out like HB.
Most of the time I don't think it's an issue & works in the Texans' favor. Take a guy like Clowney who has availability issues. Before the season a low ball "bird in the hand" deal looks enticing if you're worried about an injury in the upcoming season will affect your value the next offseason when you will be a FA.
Clowney bet on himself & so far seems to be working in his favor. But had he got hurt again he'd be thinking about the guaranteed money he could have had.
These one year deals screws up that dynamic.

But I don't care where they rank Kareem Jackson, you will be disappointed paying him $11M/yr knowing you have no choice but to do it again a second year.
Same thing with Trent Brown. My opinion of course. We're going to find out he is yet another FA that plays better in NE... & we're not going to be NE in the 2nd or third year of his contract.
Is he better than Davenport? Probably. Do I want him as my LT for the next three years? No. I don't.
The money has to make sense. Long term for the health of the team, it's got to make sense. We have to protect Watson better, that is also true.
Watson has a reputation for holding the ball too long. I'd rather teach him to learn to throw it away than be locked in to a bad deal for multiple years. I'd rather get RBs & TEs involved in the passing game than be locked in to a bad deal.
I have a different philosophy but understand your post.
Spend top $$$$ to sign 1 or 2 differencemakers in FA and I'm talking about paying enough to make guys want to play here. Not saying we tried and failed again.

We will find out about Brown, but it's only 3 yrs. That buys you time to draft a young LT and let him learn, while keeping Watson better protected in the meantime.
I would love to see us draft Andy Isabella. He can play inside or out. So when Fuller or Keke goes down we don’t loose a step.

Anyone know if the Texans are interested in any of the AAF players? Other teams seem to be signing some of the players but haven't heard anything about Texans. Was hoping they might be looking at some of the OT's.

I would prefer to beat the bushes after the draft and bring in as many UDA as the roster limit rules allow.
Lots of players that just need a chance. Scouts need to earn their paycheck.

Receiving it was Jack Easterby, whose official title — character coach/team development – is as surprising to see in an NFL front office as his role has become indispensable for the longest-running dynasty in NFL history.
A review of the media guides of the 31 other NFL franchises revealed New England is the only one to employ a character coach.
“I always make sure everybody’s here,” Easterby told USA TODAY Sports. “If someone wasn’t on time, or was taking too long in the bathroom, or skipping, I need to know. I like to get ahead on any issues.”
Easterby won’t be considered for any head coaching jobs and goes mostly unnoticed by those on the outside, but he may be the most crucial member not named Bill Belichick on the coaching staff.
“Character and the kind of people you hire is something that our country is in desperate need to get back to evaluating,” Easterby said. “Unfortunately, sometimes it matters most when we count it the least. And when we evaluate it the least, it matters most. It’s tough, but we have seen a lot of businesses and industries fall because of a lack of character.
“One of the things we’ve seen come up in our culture lately — from the (Harvey) Weinstein case and so many others – we’ve seen that choices matter.”

Wonder what Colvin and Bouye told Gipson...obviously wasn’t too bad if he still decided to come here. More evidence that what’s being said amongst players and the locker room about BoB & the Texans in general not quite matching up with what some posters on this board think is being said/thought.

I can't imagine a defensive player having a bad thing to say about the Texans.
Now if only BO'b can take the same hands off approach to the offense.

Good offensive players don’t hit the market or aren’t made available as often as good defensive players. The ones who do are often malcontents/head cases (Antonio Brown, Leveon Bell), have run afoul of the law (Kareem Hunt, Mike Vick) or arent really good anymore & past their primes (Andre Johnson, Dez Bryant........Demaryius Thomas). In which case, you don’t really want any of those guys.
But as much as I rail on Lamar Miller, he was a solid signing at the time and a definite upgrade over Blue. I would’ve also liked for them to go after Mark Ingram this year, but the Texans not snagging any good offensive players speaks more to what’s out there & available than any slanted & flawed view you’re insinuating.

Just about every critical comment about how the Texans coaching staff/FO handle players & things on the field has come from a defensive player.
Coach Reed unloading on Wade Phillips' defensive scheme.......
Swearinger unloading on BoB & the db's coach..........
hell even this year with honey badger low key getting at the FO about their antiquated practice of not negotiating contracts during the season.
Outside of Brandon Brooks' comments about his time here under BoB, hardly any criticism has ever come from the offensive players. & lets face it, there have been plenty of folks leave or let go from here that could've been critical.

Lamar Miller would be good in a system that didn't run him up the middle and is able to get him in space
OL is the biggest need and the only dudes who wanted to come here havent been healthy in years and sucked last time they were healthy.

I agree with you about Miller but I still don't understand this whole "want to come here" mantra. F/A either want to go to the Pats to get a ring or they want to go to the team throwing the stupidest money at them. This year it was Trent Brown and Bell, a couple of years ago it was Oz and, to a lesser degree, Miller. We could have Bell, badger and both Browns on the team right now but you yourself pointed out how that would put us in cap hell for the next 10 years.
Actually I agree with you but it started with someone saying all these defensive signings prove the players want to play for O'Brien. I don't think it shows that.

Oh I didn't see that. Actually for the most part I don't think what coach is there really affects a players decision unless its a Belichick or a coach with a really bad rep. I don't think a player signing or not signing shows they do or do not want to play for BoB. Ultimately its like any other job, I like the boss I work for and get along well with him but if someone came along and offered to double my pay for doing the same job I'd put in my two weeks that day. Players, F/A in particular, aren't any different.

If u could take your agenda down for a second you’d see that this is the truth. With rare exceptions, good offensive players simply don’t hit the market all that often and if a team uses a franchise tag, more often than not it’s used on an offensive player. Those guys bring in the bucks.

What I DID insinuate is the disconnect fans have with how bad they think a coach is versus what players may or may not think about that coach. Gotta believe Gipson doesn’t entertain coming here If Colvin and Bouye told them how horrible of a coach they thought BoB was.
