Lions | Harrington wants out
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 11:47:36 -0800

Tom Kowalski, of mLive.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington has told the Lions' front office and coaching staff that he does not want to play in Detroit. The Lions have been in talks with free agent QB Josh McCown (Cardinals), which could allow the team to move Harrington.

the jets have made stupid mistakes before by trusting in Pennington, but come on Joey Harrington has had great receivers to throw to and he still sucks,

he has

1.Mike Williams
2.Roy Williams
3.Charles Rogers
All 1st round picks

4.Scotty Vines
5.TE-Marcus Pollard

and the jets dont have that, they just have Lavernues Coles

"Great" receivers???

Mike Williams was a rookie this year and spent a year out of football so he was rusty, Rogers never touches the field and Roy Williams has been injury prone his first 2 years in the league. That cast doesnt sound too great when you see that it is never on the field.

I dont blame Harrington for wanting out, I dont see anyway for him to succeed there...

With Millen at GM, dont be surprised if they look at Santonio Holmes with their first pick....:stirpot:

It seems that the Toronto Argonauts will have a new QB. Seriously, who the heck wants Joey Harrington? Millen can't trade him to the Lions. But he's going to try.

I would'nt be surprised if he ends-up in St.Louis or KC. Bulger has been injury prone lately, and Green isnt getting any younger.:stirpot:

Martz has repeatedly said that he wants to tear down Harrington and build him back up. Martz wants to make wholesale changes in how Harrington approaches the job of playing quarterback and even, apparently, suggested to a national football writer that he'd like Harrington to change his uniform number. Not exactly an ego booster, eh?

There was a recent rumor that there was a rift between Martz and Harrington, but this has almost nothing to do with Martz and everything to do with Harrington. Martz believes Harrington can be successful in Detroit: the question is whether Harrington wants to be in Detroit.

I remember the following teams had some interest in Harrington during the '02 draft. Maybe they still do:

Buffalo - Completely new organization, though
Kansas City - They need a backup QB, as well
Cincinnati - Could use a starter on opening day if Palmer can't make it back
Redskins - Probably won't be interested

Harrington's former HC Marty Mornhinweg is the Eagles OC. Minnesota could use a backup. Ravens always need QB help. Joey will land a backup job somewhere.

Did the Lions not sign Jon Kitna at QB? I would want out as well if the only help my crappy team got was a new QB, and I was the old one.

Does anyone else think it is a little funny that this happens right after Bradford signs with Detroit? :)

I don't know what Harrington is thinking. It makes him seem like a bit of a wuss.

(And as an aside, it says a little something to Carr's character that he has been through all the stuff here and hasn't gone Harrington/Couch on us).

Then Retire Joey, it's what you should have done once you sank this team to the very bottom . And this is a team with a history of failure. HOW THE HECK DID YOU SET THE BAR LOWER JOEY YOU POS!!!!!

yeah that and we already have JP/KH, even though they suck they're still better then Joey Harrington :spy:

I could potentially see the Chiefs going after him. They are going to eventually need a replacement for Trent Green, might as well give him a shot and have him sit and learn the system for a few years.

I can't imagine that he will get too much money.

I don't see anyone succeeding there. How many coaches has Harrington had? How many "systems" have been put in place there and what kind of a front office thinks that it needs to draft a WR every year for three years with their first pick?

Harrington might be destined for obscurity. That's entirely possible. So was Jim Plunkett though so keep that in mind. I'd take a chance on him if I were the Jets. Most likely it would be better for his career if he went somewhere (other than NY) and sat behind someone else for a year or so first but really anywhere is better than in Detroit for him. In it's own way Detroit was as much of career killer for Harrington as Houston was for Carr. Different way of course but the end might very well be the same without changes.

Honestly people, I am waiting for the article that states, "Roy Williams wants out of Detroit" In the future, please don't post anything except that story. :stirpot:

:offtopic

Forgive me for just now crawling out from under my rock but exactly when did CBradford become a Lion or more importantly, when did we cut/release him?

He became a free agent as soon as the CBA was settled.

He was signed to a four-year, $7.4 million contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus by the Lions on Monday.

wow, our FAs are just being signed left and right......... Early in FA no less.

Milford Brown is penciled in as the starting RG for the Cards and Bradford is a 4th receiver at best. I dont really believe this Harrington nonsense. I think it might be blown out of proportion. He likely was saying it is going to be hard to improve his image in Detroit, but in no way does he want to go from competing for the starting job to a backup. Martz has done wonders with QBs that are or have been considered questionable. His system lends itself to QBs. Harrington will be the most athletic QB Martz has worked with recently and he should succeed in the system.

Lions just signed McCown, this is coming a week after the QB School held by Mike Martz

That should tell you all you need to know about what a smart coach is like.
He gets rid of pieces of crap like Joey Harrington.

Joey could go to the Jets...but everyone in the NFL considers him a joke...so maybe he should stick to playing the piano.

Got some personal animosity towards Joey eh?

I don't get the hate. So Harrington isn't the second coming of Joe Montana. Lots of teams have won with less QB talent than he brings to the table. Oh yeah, I forgot. Those teams were "teams" and were coached by guys who knew what they were doing and assembled by guys who knew what they were doing. The Lions can claim none of that.

Harrington needs out of Detroit. If it's even possible for him to go forth and have a respectable career he needs out of that mess.

Why do I hate Joey? Because he has no accuracy, turtles up after being hit. Was unable to throw the ball durring the stretch in 2004 were Kevin Jones was the leading NFL rusher for the last 8 weeks. Or when James Stewart had 1000 + yards
He goes on 8 game stretches of the worst possible QB play every SINGLE year.
Is the QB on top of the worst record in frachise history.
And I hate everyone who makes excuses for him even more.
He can't even complete 60% of his passes in a WCO
He can read defense while playing inside the most conservative offense possible.

Good players don't need excuses or stats. You can see it no matter what.
You can't see anything but a POS with Joey Harrington.

Looks like the Lions are going to have an all out war for the QB position this year. So far they have signed Jon Kitna, Shawn King, and now Josh McCown. Can't say I blame Joey for wanting out of Detroit.

Yo, David the sands of time are a fallin! Do ya feel the heat?

:coffee:

:wherewill The same place I was last year. One of the few remaining fans left in Reliant Stadium at the 2:00 min. warning!

Joey Harrington was pouting durring QB school which in turn pissed off Mike Martz. Little Joey doesn't like to be yelled at so he told management, I hate everyone and everyone hates me. Then Demanded he be cut or traded.

Class to the end Princess.

I think the Joey Harrington time in Detroit has been one big fat diaster.

He's not the right guy for that team and he's really shown nothing to warrant any other team taking a huge gamble on him.

Career backup. Maybe.

Put me down as not impressed.

Joey Harrington is going, going -- but not gone yet.

The Detroit Lions quarterback won't be back with the team next year, but he might stay on the roster for a while. The Lions will try to salvage something out of the situation and attempt to trade Harrington -- and they might be willing to wait for the right deal.

Harrington's fate in Detroit was sealed Thursday when the Lions signed free-agent quarterback Josh McCown (Arizona Cardinals) to a two-year deal, just two days after signing free agent Jon Kitna (Cincinnati Bengals). McCown and Kitna will compete in training camp for the starting quarterback job.

Those signings squeezed Harrington out of the Lions' future plans, but Harrington played a big role in punching his own bus ticket out of town.

Harrington was so adamant about leaving the Lions that several people close to the situation believe he sabotaged his appearance at last week's "quarterback school" with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

During the classroom sessions, when asked to go to the board and break down plays, Harrington put forth little effort. When asked to either open his playbook or to take notes, Harrington either refused or was extremely slow to do so. He was lethargic and uncooperative. According to sources, it was quickly apparent to Martz that Harrington had no desire to be there.

After Martz and Harrington had words, Harrington went into a meeting with Lions officials and told them he didn't want to play for Detroit any longer. Harrington was so determined to leave the team that, according to sources, he said he'd be willing to restructure his contract in any way that would quicken his release.

Harrington's desire to leave the Lions was sparked not by the management or the new coaching staff, but the entire negative environment that surrounded him, including fans, media and his own teammates. According to sources, Harrington told team officials during an emotional exchange that "I hate everybody on this team and everybody hates me."

Martz, along with Lions president Matt Millen and head coach Rod Marinelli, were unavailable for comment on Thursday. Harrington is reportedly vacationing in Thailand.

The Lions begin their voluntary off-season workout schedule on Monday and Harrington is not expected to attend.

Harrington has a salary cap figure of about $12 million for this season: a $4 million roster bonus that is due on June 15, a $4.5 million salary for the 2006 season and $3.5 million in pro-rated signing bonuses (from previous seasons).

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, the Lions can designate Harrington as a June 1 cut, but can actually release him before that date and still benefit. In that scenario, Harrington would cost $3.5 million against the team's salary cap in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

However, if the Lions trade Harrington, his total cap number hits immediately and $7 million would come off Detroit's cap this season. In 2006 salary and bonuses, the Lions will pay Kitna ($4.5 million) and McCown ($4 million) about the same money they were going to pay Harrington this season.

The Lions know they aren't going to get great value for Harrington, but the team has only six draft choices this season so they're eager to add whatever they can -- even if it's late-round picks on the second day of the draft.

The Lions are in no financial hurry to deal with Harrington. The only way they'd be pressured to make a move is if they need his $4.5 million salary cap money to go to signing another free agent or when June 15 arrives, because that's when his $4 million roster bonus is due.

Harrington's offer of reducing his contract to accelerate a quicker release doesn't mean anything because the only numbers that count -- the total of $7 million in pro-rated bonuses -- can't be changed.

Good move by Joey... I do think it's classy, that he'll walk away from that money, knowing he is going to have to prove himself to another team. I can understand people thinking Carr had it worse, on an expansion team and all. But that teams been loosing for decades, they aren't going to turn any of that around with the way they've been doing bidness. Heck one of the Greatest Running Backs of all times lost the will to play because of them dolts.....

I am a Joey Harrington Fan, and I'm eager to see what he does.. but I wonder why he's in Thailand, and not in Tennessee, New York, Oakland, even Dallas.

I think he's taking up Muay Thai so is he did come back to the Lions he could have somewhat of an offense.

Actually, Harrington never really had a good offensive line or decent talent around him (if you don't count all the first round receivers he had to throw to). So it's hard to judge him or say what he can really do.

I think he just needs better protection and good coaching. 4 years isn't enough time for a QB to develop. I think the Lions are giving up on him way too soon. :ok:

IMO, his WR's have been borderline bad. Rogers is a pothead, Roy Williams gets hurt when he sneezes, and Mike Williams should be a TE. Their offense is pretty bad. They should just give the ball to Kevin Jones since he's their best weapon.

I don't want to make this sound like I think Joey is horrible, but..........HE IS. I mean I would rather take his younger brother Mike Harrington, who just graduated out of IDAHO, thats right Not OREGON.

which makes me wonder, HOW DID JOEY EVEN GET TO OREGON, he deserved to go to idaho, well this one is for u joe, RETIRE and STOP WASTING the NFL's TIME.

Yeah...he's never been given the opportunity to succeed. The FO ignored the major problems and tried to solve them with LBs...I mean WRs.

Harrington - sabotages the coaching clinic after receiving praises from the new coaching staff

Carr - busts his tail at Reliant Park everyday after receiving praises from the new coaching staff

Yeah, they're the same guy. (drip, drip)
