I think the combo of Thomas/Akins will surpass Daniels by more than a little bit
based on what...?
Athletic ability...? You probably have a point there.

But based on this "scheme" vs. the one O.D. excelled in...? I don't see it.

Mike Remmers just wrapped up a great visit with the New York Giants. Very good chance we could be getting something done with them in the not too distant future.

Josh Kline from the Titans as a possible Saffold consolation prize?
Him being released would not count against compensatory pick formula right?

Very strange seeing no chatter about Justin Houston taking visits with a team. If the Texans trade Clowney i’d hope they grab Houston on a 2-3 year deal. Still one of the best pass rushers in the league.

I keep seeing this mentioned about compensatory picks. My understanding is that any UDFA signed by a certain date count against the signing team's formula, regardless of how they became a free agent... though the team that cuts a player under contract is not eligible to receive compensation. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that knows with certainty if I am wrong.

You may have heard of a regime change with the Browns. Or let's put it another way. Let's see where the Browns and Texans stand at the end of the year. My money is on the Browns. They've passed the Texans by and are making moves, via trade and FA to put pieces around Mayfield while he is on his rookie deal. What pieces has Gaine added to Watson during FA while he is on his rookie deal?

The Browns are not only relevant again, they are an early AFC SB contender. The Texans? Well, they have a lot of cap space, so there's that.

It took them well over 20 years to do so bwhahaha. Maybe if we dabble at the bottom for years on top of years. Just maybe we can finally be like the Browns who you say has finally passed us. Even though they haven't even played the season yet.

I don't even think it is that deep...Blackson has a different role and is a BO'Gaine dude in terms of body type (6'4 320) versus 6'3'maybe 300 maybe Covington who is more quickness 4-3 DT which Brandon Dunn (tendered RFA) is nearly a twin. Joel Health re-signed is more 3-4 end like Blackson. That's not saying that Blackson was not relatively overpaid, but there is plenty of football to the dudes who were kept.

I would like to see Watt on the inside more.
I don't have a problem with that deal. Crennel obviously sees something in blackson and he probably got some outside offers. Sounds like Covington didn't have much of a market
His back and knee respectfully says "no."

I know.
And notice that I agreed with you from a strictly athletic ability standpoint.

But you were predicting future success and we all know athletic ability is not the whole picture.

Who the hell us Briean Bobby Calhoun !!???? Can somebody tell me about this guy????
Former #Browns CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun signed a 1-year deal with the #Texans, source said. He started 15 games over the past two seasons.
He only played slot and dime with the Browns.

***************************************************************************************

Boddy-Calhoun has spent the last two seasons starting for the Cleveland Browns starting 15 games of the 29 games he has appeared in.In 2018, he appeared in all 16 games and had 56 total tackles with 2 passes defensed and 1 forced fumble. Boddy-Calhoun has appeared in 43 games with 21 starts and putting 138 total tackles with 3 intersections and 19 pass deflections.

In 2018, Boddy-Calhoun allowed 42 receptions for 506 yards, 12 yards a receptions and 9.0 yards a targets. He also allowed two touchdown passes.LINK

Interesting blocking TE prospect if he can do it.
From a previous post:

Fisher actually played some TE and HBack in his rookie season. I like Fisher, but his atrial fib, even though calmed with an ablation procedure is far from an assurance that he will be free of the arrhythmia, Multiple such procedures are not uncommonly required, even after years following the initial procedure. But what may be even concerning is the lumbar disc herniation that landed him on IR last November. This may have something to do with his desire to lose weight and change position, although this may not make his risk of re-injury all that much different.

Our biggest issue on defense is CB play. The second biggest issue is interior pressure. All of our pass rush comes from our edge guys. We get absolutely no pressure up the middle (which actually affects the QB more).

QB Hits last year...
Watt - 25
Clowney - 21
Mercilus - 14
Covington - 8
McKinney - 5
Mathieu - 4
Reader - 3
Blackson - 2
Ejiofor - 2
Cunningham - 2
Scarlett - 2
Watkins - 1

We had 64 hits from our edge guys. We had 14 from our interior guys and we just let a guy with 8 of those 14 walk and re-signed the guy with 2.
Maybe because Watt was used at times inside?

When he’s thinking about it I wonder what Watson thinks about his protection right about now? So far the Texans have done nothing to help him.
Probably one of the two mistakes of youth.

1) Believing what he is told that they are going to solve the problem in the draft.

2) The ego of youth "I can take these hits"

He already said something along the lines of #2

I just hope we find him some level of protection before we get him killed or shell shocked. It would be nice to not be looking for a QB again in the near future

Carr sucked. Nothing would have given him what it takes to be successful in this league. Stop the revisionist history. With that said, I strongly agree we need more bodies on the OL to protect the Watson investment.

F David Carr and that family.
Carr did suck. He had the talent to be good ,and the work ethic to be a journeyman.

He failed the team as much as the team failed him. The ol they put in front of him will always be a prime example of how to ruin a qb as fast as possible because we all saw it first hand. I see no flaw whatsoever in using that as a reference point with Watson. You did infact finish your post by saying we need more ol. That was the point.

And yeah, f carr.

What I saw was an OL drastically improve by changing the QB, & get better every year since. To the point of sending a Center acquired with a 6th round pick to the pro bowl.

Hmmm .... we have now fallen to the level of "F David Carr and his family". He still owns the record for the most sacks in a season, and the most fumbles recovered - by anyone - ever. I was 51 at the time, (probably the oldest fan on this board). I watched guys like Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, Norm Van Brocklin, Y.A. Tittle, Bobby Lane, and George Blanda .... and all others since. In my early youth, I wanted to be a quarterback .... not a fireman or cop or cowboy or astronaut or president .... a QB .... I would throw the ball - literally, all day long. Suffice to say, that I watched them very closely. Without a team in Houston for 15 or so years, I was especially attentive to David Carr. I could go on about Carr for a while, but let me just say - he had an excellent arm, high levels of athleticism, intellect, and immeasurables. The only fault he had, was too much character, and way too much guts ! I would watch those games, while literally screaming "STAY DOWN, STAY DOWN" ! I've always considered myself a person of integrity, but in his situation, after they had killed me - once too often, I would've just laid there with a finger high in the air ! F David Carr ??

I agree with a lot of your sentiment. It has however been widely reported that Carr was no film junkie. Last to arrive, first to leave. That has always sat wrong with the fan base.

And in 5 years he couldn't learn not to run out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. Those "sacks" didn't even involve getting hit.

No arguing that. My personal favorite is throwing the ball away on a 2 point conversion.

As I said before, he failed the team and the team failed him.

I understand the disdain for Carr, but my personal disgust for Casserly far out weighs it. Not sure why more people here don't loath casserly.

I wonder if that was from the outset, or once he was in a wheel chair ? Seriously, if that occurred well into the season, I could understand .... an eventual feeling of "what's the use?" .... or, if he came to camp with that attitude, the coaches should have called him in and discussed it !

I depends a lot on what part of the season they occurred. If were far enough along, he could have been asking himself if that extra yard was worth "two broken ribs and a punctured lung" !

What you saw was in Kubiak's regime after Carr took an ass kicking for 4 years. Dude was already shell shocked and ruined by then.
I guess we'll never know since we didn't stock the line with first round picks. But I'll say again they revamped that line every year & never improved protecting the QB.

Maybe these life long coaches kept screwing it up year after year. Or maybe the young, pretty, talented prospect was one of those that just wasn't going to make it.

He didn't see the whole field. He didn't extend plays by making plays outside the pocket. He wouldn't just throw the ball away... & honestly I can't remember but I think I had a problem with him not calling a timeout when he needed to. He ran into sacks.

I know there's a difference in run blocking & pass blocking. I know it's possible & most likely for a line to be better at one & not the other. But for a line to be among the best running the ball & among the worst protecting the QB... that's something special there.

On a tangent here but hearing the same thing being said about Rosen as the QB with all the talent in the world but not being the pro necessary to make it work. Sounds like the Cards may get out from under him just a year into the project as well.

He was a legit prospect. He squandered it and the team helped him. I cant imagine Brady being Brady with the line he had. Just impossible to overcome.

Brady wasn't sacked a record number of times, but his Jersey wasn't spotless at the end of the game either. He figured out how to accomplish the task at hand, which wasn't "carry the whole team" in the first 6 years of his career. It was get 1 first down, or get us in field goal range, or get us 1 more yard.

Now he makes everyone around him better but that wasn't always the case.

Lots of room here. Are we arguing the GOAT vs one of the bigger qb busts in years?

Probably not a fair comparison (though I'm the one who brought it up.)

Just any - all quarterbacks - need some semblance of protection to be competent.

That 1st year for carr I worked night shift and I'd wake up to catch the games on Sunday. It was maybe his second game but it was against the chargers. They beat his azz like no qb I'd ever seen before. It was truly a stomping.

He took that beating for years. No qb I ever saw could've been successful after 4 years of that.

thunderkiss, you know that the pass protection weaknesses are very often found in the ZBS teams, creating problems in the red zone .... but some of the college - spread offenses seem to be finding more success in tighter quarters .... and .... were you by any chance a lineman ? Your handle seems to lend itself to that possibility.

Who is this David Carr you speak of? I honestly have no memory of David Carr playing QB for the Texans. During his entire time in Houston I lived in Minnesota. And that was before NFL Redzone and Game Pass. Sure, I saw “highlights” but nothing stands out. Except his hair.
