I went to the Texans Web site and I found a clip of Kubiak's press conference today where he introduced the DE and Sage. From the get go you are told that these are the people Kubiak wanted and we got who he wanted. You need to credit the GM, Casserly and his collegues for doing that. Again this is who KUBIAK wanted. They were at the top of the list. They are football players with CHARACTER. That's what he said.

Now, as I have stated elsewhere, I wanted to hear from Kubiak and we have. I listened to what he has said and I will have to trust him until I have reason not to. He was enthusiastic about these three individuals and they are obviously his choices. We will have to see what happens, but I was happy to hear that these are people he wanted. The DE is particularly interesting and is well spoken. He is bright and articulate. He seems to have a quick wit and an infectous smile. My nerves have been smoothed and I hope Kubiak will continue to provide us with information as we make our way to the draft. I think it would lend a lot of encouragement to the fan base and go a long way in boosting the morale of the fans, the team and the community.

If you haven't done so, I would suggest you go to the web site and listen to the approximately 7 minute interview. Once, again, these are the people he and his coaches wanted and they were at the top of his list...........

What?! Ok. He wanted them. Do you want people to begin to bash him along with CC? Cause it isn't going to stop (the bashing of CC), if that was your intent.

No, what I'm saying is that you need to look before you leap and listen to the players that have been signed and begin to form an honest opinion of what they might have to offer. My first impression is that they are people we really would like to have on our ball club. Like it or not, I will reiterate, these are people Kubiak wanted and were at the top of his list and Casserly got them for him. At the present time I see no reason to criticize anyone for these selections. If these were planned aquistions, as stated, then they have a plan on how to fill the rest of the holes. That's all you care about, and if it works, then we can all celebrate. Wouldn't that be a nice reward.....

kubiak says Rosenfels has 'ability in this league to be a starter someday", 'His best days are ahead of him' and 'be a part of our football team and compete with David'.

Sounds like Kubiak is very high on these guys and looking forward to implementing them in the Texans new schemes.

He mentions more than once about 'pushing David to make David better and make our football team better' and re-interates that he thinks 'Rosenfels has starter quality in this league'. "He will be given every opportunity to compete"

After hearing this video clip I am getting excited by the fact that there doesn't seem to be anymore 'gimme' positions on this team, including Carr's. That is something lacking on the old regime. Regardless of poor playing certain individuals were the starters continuously. Competition at EVERY position is how teams in this league get even better.

I wasn't too thrilled initially with these FA picks, but after the video clip, I gotta say it changed my mind and looks like Kubiak has done his homework and is implementing his plan and scheme as best he can.

I just listened to the audio/video and one word stuck out to me that Kubs continued to say over and over. . . COMPETE. It surely sounded as if Sage is being brought in to compete with Carr. He also said he felt Sage had qualities to be a starter in this league.

I don't think Kubs would hesitate to start Sage if he felt it was best for the team.

Maybe, just maybe, we might have our first QB competition going on the team.

I've been under the impression all along that Casserly is a GM that gets the players the coaches want. It was evident with Capers, and now confirmed with Kubiak (in addition to all the Capers picks we've let go).

I say we give the new FO a grace period before ordering a firing squad. Some folks are freakin' out way too soon. We've got many months to go before any real action begins. Pace yourself. :howdy:

So...you're saying I just have to convince Kubes to bring me in as the new MLB and I get a fat contract? Swweeeet. We go way back. I once sat next to his kid's babysitter's boyfriend's high school shop teacher's barber at a Broncos game. I'm in. :redtowel::sarcasm:

Ok so I watched that. Casserly has always been a GM that just got what the coach wanted and Ferens has been the model of overspending, it likely comes from his days as an agent and trying to gouge teams he might as well spread the love. Weaver is overpaid for what he brings to the team. Yeah the likely hood is if we offered him 18.5 he would have went somewhere else, but DE that dont get to the QB are not in high demand as you can see in FA. Pressure is what is wanted and Weaver does not do that. Realize this people and I am now in a whatever the Texans do does not matter I will be in my seat screaming next year, but on third downs we will have a D line currently of Peek, Weaver, TJ/Robaire, Babin. That does not strike fear to me, and the obvious adjustment for teams will be to throw on rushing downs to take advantage of the fact Weaver will be at DE. The same way many teams did in Baltimore. I seriously hope this guy gets the job done and I dont want much out of him just 40+ tackles and 7sacks. I will be happy with that.

I will be honest. Once again the Texan's FO has surprised me. Now I thought Greenwood was an odd aquisition. I think he will fit better in a 4-3 this year.

The bigger question being; is Weaver going to get to the QB frequently? Personally, I would rather see Mario Williams putting his hand down next to Travis Johson.

I know very little about Rosenfels either. One thing can be noted though, he was not able to surpass some lackluster QB's at Miami (not sure if that was the coaches or him).

Jameel Cook was backing up a pro-bowler fullback in Alstott so I could see him having a great deal of untapped potential that went unrecognized. I sure hope he can plow the way for Reggie Bush. ;) DD should enjoy having a new blocker in front of him also on thrid down.

Mod Squad
Cook might be more of the type of FB that Kubiak is looking for in his offense. I don't think Cook is much of a bulldozing type of FB. Quite the opposite actually. I think he fits more into a FB that is a weapon on offense, and is able to catch the ball out of the backfield more. Does this mean that Norris might not make the final cut? Possibly if Kubes can't find a use for one of the best blocking FBs in the game who is also a poor receiver out of the backfield.

So really, what do we need Casserly for? He's not this so called "genius" we've been hearing about since inception, so we can go ahead and clear that up. If you say Rosenbench will challege Carr then I've got some good beach front property in El Paso to sell at a great price. Weaver is a good replacement for Walker....if we were in a 3-4. I'm still scratching my head over this one. But I guess I could be wrong, I mean, he does have a great smile....something you look for in a Defensive lineman in the National Football League.

I believe that Kubiak already told you what Casserly is for if you (or should I say y'all) will clean the crap out of your ears and listen. What do want him to do . . . get players that Kubiak doesn't want?

If you have a problem with these players, then why don't take it to the man who told Casserly who to go get? What is this? Is there some sort of unwritten rule on this board, where criticism of the head coach is frowned upon just because no games have been played yet. Yet, at the same time, it's OK to rip Casserly, even though he's working with a new coaching staff?

I dunno . . . sounds a little two-faced, if you ask me.:(

I think they wanted to get someone that could play LDE on 1st and 2nd downs, was a good run stuffer yet had some semblance (a pulse) of pass-rushing skills. If that is all they wanted Weaver fits the bill, but they overpaid. If Weaver also moves to DT on 3rd downs and provides a pass-rush (next to TJ), then he might be worth more than I think. I really am not stunned that they went after this guy. He is the type of DE I thought they would target since they will probably have Peek and Babin manning the two DE positions on passing downs. The only way I saw us getting a stud DE, was if we traded down from the #1 spot and drafted Super Mario.

I like the Weaver signing .... Mainly because he is strong against the run . I think that was a major problem with last seasons defense .(probably more directly related to the Texans LB's last season in the 3-4) Stopping the run is the first step to a good pass rush ...... 2nd or 3rd and long allows the D-linemen to get after the QB much more aggressively ..... and a good pass rush is the defensive backs best friend .

The Jameel Cook (FB) signing looks to be an insurance policy for the possible loss of J.Wells ..... Cook is a special teams stand out , a good blocker and skilled reciever. I expect the backs to be highly involved in the passing game , Cook fits the system and fills a need on ST.

As for Sage Rosenfels .... I looked at his stats w/ Miami last season and one thing stood out ..... 61 attempts and ZERO sacks .....Sacks have been a major problem since this teams inception , maybe Rosenfels can help Carr improve in this area .The 81.5 QB rating isnt bad for a back-up either.

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235151

None of these guy's are ALL-PRO top end talent ..... But this team was so bad last season that improving several positions with good players is going to make a dramatic difference in the end result.

Right now I wont make any predictions about next seasons record .... Its too early , the team still has a ton of holes , and the draft is still about 40 days away ....BUT at this point anything over 5 wins next season will be considered a huge improvement in my book ....

After the FA period cools down and the draft is completed Ill make a detailed post (as I do each year) about where I think the team will finish , what they can do to improve and what I think they did right or wrong this off-season.

Go Texans!
How is this guy NOT animprovement over Gary Hurt Foot Walker?

Seriously, he's probably the same type of player as Walker except he's younger and probably smarter.

I know he had some missed games last year, but it was the first time he had been injured in his career and the doctors have cleared him...

So I say we give him a chance. I can't see us drafting Mario Williams now, which is interesting because I think his draft stock is rapidly rising.

My guess is that CC develops a list called "mediocre players willing to take below market compensation" and hands it to Kubiak. Kubiak can then say "he got who he wanted" but I'm sure it's in the context of CC's list.

Exactly.

What a difference a year makes!

Last year at this time most of the posters were forecasting 7-9 or better and playoffs. Ibar was warning about an oncoming trainwreck.

Now Ibar is optimistic and many posters are wringing their hands and crying 'woe is me all is doomed'...:(

Gonna be real interesting to see how it all plays out..:D

I think Ibar and myself were the charter members of last seasons "Chicken Little Club" (My rep is just now making a comeback from the beating it took last pre-season) ..... Again we are on the same page , lets hope our forecasting stays true to last years form and this team is much improved.:homer:

I am praying for a good season, so hopefully this year will be better. Plus, the Texans now have a solid offensive system, which should make Gaffney a lot better, and help out the D a bit. I don't think the Texans will make the playoffs this year, but this is a solid chance that with a new system in place, maybe the Texans will turn things around. I'm looking forward to this season with the new players.

Pre- free agency needs:
1. Left OT that can pass block
2. Defensive end that is a sack machine
3. TE that can block and catch to relieve pressure on Carr
4. Middle linebacker
5. # 2 wide reciever

We got or may get:
1. Same guys as last season that mgt may improve and perhaps an L.O.T 2nd round- Max Jean Giles?
2. DE that hasn't found QB more than once every 4-5 games.
3. Putzier may sign
4. Wong
5. Oh, boy. Walters? Mathis?

Did we need another back that can catch a pass? I thought DD, Morancy & Bush could do that and we already had a f.b. that could block. Hopefully Cook is a lot better than who we have.

Draft: 1st- Bush 2. Giles 6'4" 341 may not drop out of 1st 3a. Best DE or MLB or C.B. avail 3b What we don't get @ a. 4th round:what we didn't get in 3rd. 5th:A blocking full back that can catch- oh we just spent $millions for Cook. And there is always next year's draft & Free Agency.

Guess we could start a poll after Training Camp and vote on:

Its really too soon for me to cast a vote, but we should all have an opinion after training camp.

Thank you! Really it has been interesting so far. I like what Kubiak says and the way people seem to react to him. If you noticed in the interview he had long talks with the players before signing them. It appears he told them what he is looking for and expecting of them.

Kubiack has a different style and he exudes much more confidence than Capers. He seems to apply pressure to himself as well as the players. He seems to take on the responsiblility of getting it done.

So many people on this club were misdirected over the last few years and it will take time to reteach them and head them in the right direction. I think we will begin to see what this is all about when the TC's start and when we see how people react and begin to fit together. Of course when we have the 1st preseason game we will get an even better feel. Hopefully, they won't just play one series and say that's it. I would think they would want to play their starters longer this year to get some needed game time and experience working together.

The next surprise could be the draft. That will be interesting for all of us. We all have our prejudices and it will be interesting to see what the outcome is. The one thing I feel confident about is that they will be people of good character, people who our coaching staff truely feels they can work with and people who will fill the needs of the ball club. What the exact mix will be is hard to say, because it will in part depend upon their evaluations of what they think WE NOW have. I believe their assessment is that a lot of people on this ball club have been playing out of position and are a lot better than we think. That is my gut feel and has been for a long time.

Of course my personal focus will be the O-line and how that group comes together. Will it be a blend of old and new? Will it be the same old line? Will it be mostly a new O-line? The real question, however, is will they be effective?

For many the focus will be on the defense and the questions are similar. This is going to be an interesting year to watch. GOOOO TEXANS...............

If, 1)Putzier signs and becomes the TE everyone says we need, ( I don't like TEs)2) Bush is 1/2 of a "future hall/fame" he is alleged to be 3) we get Giles or another decent Left OT in draft (I am in the trade down for D'Brick group) 4) Peek & Babin are finally what are expected.5) our two 3rds & the 4th give us solid players, I will be happy regardless of the record. That leads to my last comment for next years draft & f/a as I think it will take 2 years to get us to a level playing field.:ok: And finally, I agree that by training camp, we will know what we have to put on the field at least.

Interviews and empty promises ain't going to change the fact that we still haven't addressed one of our immediate needs (O-line/WR/LB). And the last time I checked isn't the GM higher up in the organization than the head coach.....Kubiak has to say he's happy w/ the spare parts he was given. How else is he going to get this hoopty running again?

I'm with you. It didn't take long for the euphoria created by the coaching change to wear off. These moves are being made with Kubiak's input, no doubt. Offensive players who can block and catch seems to be the theme. Makes sense if you are going to run the type of O Denver runs.

New coach, new scheme, new players, #1 overall pick and already people are writing off the team in the fog of free agency. I don't get it. I'd be morose and incoherent if Capers was still the coach.

I thought we'd go after at least one stud pass rushing DE in FA and let Babin and Peek battle out the other spot. What's even more wierd is how a 3-4 DE is coming over to play in 4-3 on a team that just switched from a 3-4. Am I crazy or does that not figure right? We still have like 6 DT's over 300 pounds. I just don't see Weaver as having a lot of fire, something gravely needed on this team. We lose Walker and gain someone of lesser caliber. Does that sound familiar? Flash back.

let's just wait and see huh?
Jake Plummer turned the corner with Shanahan and Kubes.
2 coaches (HC & OC) with a ton of exp. and 2 rings, back to back no less.
Plummer helped take a team that sucked (AZ) for years to the playoffs and actually advanced a round by beating Dallas in Dallas.

The building blocks were there alot more then they are here.

Lets look at some Championship winning coaches:
*Cowher has been a HC for a very long time....lost one and finally got one.
*Bill Belichik worked with Parcells, got fired from Clev, and had to have his starting QB go to the ER with bleeding in the chest cuz his O-line supposedly sucked only to have his back-up QB take them to the Suber Bowl.....3 freakin' times, gotta little lucky huh.
*Dick Vermeil couldn't swing the deal in Philly, then went to broadcasting, then came back. Then when all felt right, his QB broke his leg and they had to with the Arena League guy, they gotta little lucky too.
*John Gruden took over a Bad *** team and hasn't been back since.
*Brian Billick....Don't know enough about him
*Mike Shanahan was fired as the Denver O-Cood at one point and fired as the Raiders HC at another, he got himself two rings.....with a 1st rd/1st pick QB who has great leadership skills and a sixth rd RB.
*Mike Holmgren seems to be the only one that went from OC to HC of the Pack and won one while losing another.

Those of you guys who think Kubes is gonna be this great HC and turn around Carr must have a Crystal Ball cuz I don't see it. I sure hope you guys are right.

Yea I caught that too, that just seems out of whack to bring in a 3rd stringer and say that he will compete. But by the Carr haters accounts, Sage should be able to compete since Carr is so bad. Isn't that the right logic? It seems to me that you really can't put too much into what coaches and GM's say when they make acquistions, it just has too much sugar coating on it.

exactly.

Course we didn't play Ragone, our 3rd stringer last season, for any gametime at all. Not even those blowout, obviously a lost cause, games. Now I wonder why that was? Controversy? Or were we really trying to get that all time sack record AGAIN with our 'just you wait for his potential to show up' broken down hoopty Carr.

so you're in the "very Pro-Bush group" and the "Trade down and get D'Brickashaw" camp? interesting...
If you notice the first sentence in my post was the last line of post I quoted. I do not know how that happened. I do like Bush, but honestly think we can do good with the backs we have. I am very big on Morancy but that is probably unsupported optimism for now. I think Dbrick next to Pitts would be awesome for Carr & DD, especially if Putzier signs and is as good as others claim.

Once, again, these are the people he and his coaches wanted and they were at the top of his list...........

wow ! I need to either save this post or get a network admin to investigate this to see if the I.P. address is correct.

When the Cards made it to the playoffs in 1998, Plummer was 324/547, 59.2 completion percentage, threw for 3737 yards, 17 TD's and 20 INT's for a QB rating of 75. Nothing spectacular. In Carr's last 2 seasons he has completed more than 60% of his passes and has thrown for more TD's than INT's.
