NFL Random Thought of the Day

Will Latest Case of Laser Pointer Usage Finally Cause NFL to Take Action?

    • There have been a few cases of a fan pointing a laser pointer at an opposing player over the past decade. It should lead the NFL to rethink stadium security policies and how those policies connect to the integrity of the game.

Even a laser beam to the face can’t stop Tom Brady. But pointing a laser at him could lead to criminal charges and a permanent ban from an NFL stadium. It could also lead the NFL to rethink stadium security policies and how those policies connect to the integrity of the game.

The NFL is investigating a suspicious green beam that repeatedly appeared on Brady’s uniform, helmet and skin during the AFC Championship on Sunday. As KMBC's William Joy shows through images posted on Twitter, the beam nears Brady’s face several times, including during crucial moments of the game. One such occasion arose when Kansas City Chiefs safety Daniel Sorensen intercepted a pass thrown by Brady. Imagery shared by KCTV’s David Harris also reveals that the beam reached the helmet of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Nnadi and possibly other Chiefs and New England Patriots players who were positioned near Brady.

Just piggy backing:

Noticed the same site had a story about KC firing DC Sutton. Haven't noticed it being posted here yet.

Teams losing in the AFC playoffs firing co-ordinators.

Just maybe having a co-ordinator isn't the be all answer.

Losing them hasn't slowed BB down.

In a conference call, the NFL says that concussions dropped 29 percent this regular season compared to last year. Still to be determined whether it's a trend or a blip, but either way it's a significant decrease

10:36 AM - 24 Jan 2019

Some are questioning if the NFL can be believed.

Cam Newton underwent his second throwing shoulder surgery in 2 year. In May of 2017, Newton had a repair of a partially torn rotator cuff and returned for the regular season. This last one was an arthroscopy. The team will not put out a timeline for recovery. They said that it did not require "major reconstruction." This season, it was evident that his throws for the most part had no velocity, distance or accuracy. Even if it were debridement of his rotator cuff and/or labrum, this is not a particularly good situation for the young man's future. We should know more by the beginning of the season.

There have been 310 torn ACL’s requiring reconstructive surgery in the NFL since 2013!

2018 = 52
2017 = 51
2016 = 49
2015 = 50
2014 = 45
2013 = 63

I've been able to determine that Cam Newton did not have a "simple" debridement. He underwent a 2nd rotator cuff repair for a partial tear. Not great news.

Lions’ Trevor Bates arrested, accused of punching police officer
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 26, 2019, 12:59 PM EST

Lions linebacker Trevor Bates was arrested early this morning in New York City and accused of punching a police officer.

Bates was initially arrested after a cab driver said he refused to pay his fare. At the police station, police say, he flew into a rage and punched a sergeant, according to the New York Post. The officer suffered a concussion and needed three stitches.

“We are aware of the arrest of Trevor Bates earlier today in New York,” the Lions said in a statement. “We have not spoken to Trevor as of yet and are still in the process of gathering more information. The Detroit Lions will have no further comment at this time.”

Police reportedly took Bates to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

One storyline to follow for 2019: The #Redskins are planning as if they won’t have QB Alex Smith next season, sources say. They believe he’ll miss the entire season with his broken leg issues and are acting accordingly. If he’s ready, they will be pleasantly surprised.

As I see it, with Smith having had multiple surgeries due to complications of infection, he will be extremely fortunate to ever return to football. In fact, this scenario colors his chance of return as bleak. From a photo from last week while Smith was at a Wizard's game, he is seen in an external fixation device. This tells me that his fractures are unstable........and that portions of supportive tibia and overlying soft tissues required removal due to the infection. This makes it almost a given that he will need placement of bone grafts, and soft tissue grafts and/or flaps to replace the missing supportive bone and soft tissues.

What a bunch of pathetic crybabies. Apparently this is the first time in their franchise's 50 year history they have been screwed over by the refs. Welcome to the club. Hell, even the Patriots probably get screwed over once every 49 years. Sounds like the Saints are the luckiest franchise ever.

Yeah, it should have called. But was that pass catchable? It looked too low and 10 feet away from the receiver. Pretend he had caught it - would have been short of a first down. The only reason the Saints "would have won the game for sure" was that a penalty would be an automatic first down and they could have run the clock down. The Saints did nothing to win the game themselves. Even then they could have stopped the Rams from driving down for the game tying field goal. Or when THEY GOT THE BALL FIRST IN OVERTIME they could have scored themselves instead of throwing an interception and letting the Rams get another field goal.

They didn't get screwed any worse than the Chiefs. Without the totally bogus roughing the passer call, the Patriots probably don't get a TD on that drive. But just like the Saints the Chiefs had their chances to win and didn't take advantage of it (although the Chiefs did not get the ball in overtime). The difference is the Chiefs fans aren't making a court case out of it.

The National Fixed League

This is just another case in point although its high profile will hopefully affect change. You know somethings fishy when the 2 officials making the cal 1. lived in the LA area 2. Used to play for the Rams. The NFL was stupid for letting these guys ref that game so that the appearance impropriety could never happen. Also it should tell you something when the bookies in Vegas were giving $$$$ bet on the Saints back to people who bet on the Saints.

I was rooting for the Rams due to them building their team thru the draft/FA and trades and I'm hoping that Cal allows Gaine to build the Texans the same way. But there's no way after the way the Saints got screwed I can root for the Rams to win the SB.

The good thing is that with legalized betting hopefully change is forced on the NFL. It looks like the NFL went to great lengths to make LA become a successful NFL city and make sure their new high priced palace will be filled next yr. Follow the $$$$.

If the league is fixed, the refs knew a Rams player would piledrive a Saints receiver? They knew that the Saints would let the Rams drive for a FG? They knew that Brees would throw an INT in OT? Or did they make him throw it? Or was it not actually an interception and that was just another fixed call?

If the league is fixed then WTF with all your criticism of Kubiak and Smith over the years? Or your praise of the Patriots? If it was fixed then maybe Matt Millen was a great GM and Hue Jackson was a great coach.

Pick a story and stick to it.

Freddy you can bury your head in the sand if you wish. Actions speak louder than words and only a fool would bet on NFL games.

The difference between you and I is your arrogance will never let you admit that fixing games by a league is possible. It's been going on for yrs. Think about the 70's Pittsburgh/Oilers game. Different league but look at the NBA as a guide. You need to follow the money and you will find the truth. The NFL wants to be successful and what better way than to try to do everything possible to have the Rams in the SB. The NFL is helping Kroenke sell those high priced PSL's in his new palace next year.

All you have to do is remove your face from the Smithiak crotch long enough to see the truth. But we know that's not going to happen.

Is that clean enough for you Cak. You and I have had conservation's much worse, even though we both know Freddy is much more sensitive than we are.

They better have reasonable trade expectations. Really unlikely they'd carry Foles at $25 mil. Wentz hits the cap for $8.5 mil.

How many teams are in desperate need for a QB? It only takes one but I can't think of any off the top of my head that are that desperate for this year

Their both free agents, so technically we have no one behind Watson at all... and Lechner was forcibly retired :choke:

I’d keep Foles and trade the guy that Foles has to step in for every year.

No argument with being apprehensive about Wentz's injury history moving forward. Not sure though how that equates to backing up a brinks truck for Nick Foles though.

He's put up some numbers against garbage defenses, then played decent to quite poor against everyone else while their defense balled out. And that's when he gets to play with the house money situation of being the plan b qb. Should we also (and by we I mean the eagles or whomever may be thinking of making him their guy) just sweep under the rug how he handled being the actual man when he had his chance?

Wonder what Gaines plan is concerning our backup QB? Free agent, someones PS or draft a prospect?

Gotta get over the "have to have a veteran backup" fetish.

Anyone's guess I suppose.

Right because the whole world knows it's a bluff.
After a team tags a player how long do they have to rescind the designation, is it all the way up until the regular season games start ?

At any time unless it's signed. Once signed they're hooked.

Cincinnati Bengals have hired James Casey to be TE coach..

Good for him, good dude.. I hope he has a great coaching career. I'm going to keep a eye on him. They guy basically played his entire career in Kubiak's system, so I bet he at least knows how to utilize TEs..

Report: Nick Foles informing Eagles he is voiding option
Posted by Charean Williams on February 5, 2019, 8:53 PM EST

Well, that didn’t take long.

Not long after a report came out that the Eagles have informed Nick Foles they are exercising the $20 million option on his contract comes word that the quarterback is informing the Eagles he is voiding the option, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Both moves were expected, with Foles paying the team $2 million to buy back his freedom.

The Eagles now can place the franchise tag on the backup quarterback in hopes of trading him. The franchise tag for quarterbacks is expected to be around $25 million for next season, with the window for use of the tag opening Feb. 19.

Foles must sign the tag for the Eagles to trade him.

The price for Foles is expected to be around the third round, Schefter reports.

By placing the franchise tag on Foles and seeking a trade, the Eagles control where Foles ends up. The Giants and Washington both likely enter the offseason in the market for a quarterback. So Philadelphia can keep Foles from ending up with an NFC East rival.

I'm trying to understand how Foles will recoup the $2 million. He knew by voiding the option the Eagles will place the franchise tag on him. No team will sign Foles to an offer sheet and lose 2 #1 picks. The Eagles will trade Foles, but not before Foles agrees to a contract extension with the team trading for him. Maybe the $5 million difference between the contract option and franchise tag could put more pressure to make a trade. But, I doubt the Eagles want to bring Foles back and create another QB controversy. Seems like Foles should have kept the $2 million and let this play out.

thought that was weird too. if I were the Eagles I'd waive the $2MM as a gesture of good will to the guy that brought them a title. easy for me to say, it's not my 2MM.

Could be he's trying to force them to use the tag?
