FIRE O'BRIEN NOW!!!

Yeah, his wife got cancer. The Texans had to move on.

That's the narrative but tell me why he isn't back and why he isn't coming back if they really wanted him here.

Doesn't matter he's gone and that's a good thing. Time to move on, good times are ahead.

Not when they had so much $$$$ invested in Os and your boss (Ricky) tells you to play Os.

Why dont you think he went back to Savage particularly after Savage saved the season against the Jags?

You wont see him make the wrong decision this yr.

I think O'Brien is an idiot, that's why. Why did he start mallet? Why start Savage over Watson?

Patdstat (OBrien defender) was defending starting osweiler over Savage.

OBrien chooses who to play. If he gets convinced by Rick, then he's an even bigger idiot than I thought.

I think McNair saw 4 good games by Watson and wanted to keep O'Brien and Watson together.

Turned out to be a fluke.

We dont know this.

Watson was coming off an ACL and the team had an 11-5 season with a QB that was coming off an ACL and had a puncutured lung. Upgrade the talent and you will see a better Watson/Offense.

At that point it will all be Watson's improving on his own and BOB sucks.

I did think osweiler would suck. Classic case of overpaying a free agent from another team. Very risky.

Denver would have offered similar money but not nearly the same amount of guaranteed money.

Also, people wondering why we have depth issues should look at the assets we lost throughout the osweiler debacle, including lost picks and foregone free agents.

What other options did they have that offseason? Stick with Hoyer or hope to draft Paxton Lynch. They went with the option I think majority of people would have picked.

It was a fluke because OBriens ol, system, and playcalling suck. We have enough data.

People have "told you this" about a thousand times now - you don't read it, and come back and ask them to "tell me this" again.

The side you don't agree with aren't the only people whose minds won't be changed.

Other than it is something to talk about during the offseason, I don't know why we keep coming back to this topic no one is ever going to come out and say what really happened - and ALL of us only really seem to believe the Twitter-verse and the media when they post something we already agreed with or support the narrative.

Not everything has to be a conspiracy, I personally agree with the side that is leaning towards, "My wife has cancer, I have left the org, keep my personal business out of the media and let me be with my family"

Sometimes there is good reason to go with a placeholder instead of overpaying some scrub.

But Goff and Wentz were both drafted that year. Guys like Foles, Cousins, Keenum and Fitzpatrick were also free agents for possible placeholders. All far better than osweiler.

Drafting Goff & Wentz wasn't an option. There was no way we could have moved up that far in the draft. Cousins was tagged by the Redskins.

We just went through two seasons of placeholders w/ Fitz, Hoyer, Keenum & Mallet. QB play was the obvious biggest weakness of our team at that time. Playing hindsight, yes, going w/ one of those guys other than Os would have been a better option. But they weren't looking for a placeholder that offseason, and Os probably presented that best realistic option of being a franchise guy.

The Texans swung, missed, and now have moved on from Os. I don't criticize them much for that move.

They couldn't afford to go with a place holder, they just had their QB completely **** the bed, they had to make a big move. Yes Goff and Wentz were both drafted that year and both had big question marks on being busts or not. Not that it mattered because how exactly were they suppose to get low enough in the draft to get them when all the teams in the top 10 needed QBs. Also no, at that time none of those guys were far better than Osweiler. They had more tape than Osweiler but they were not better.

You are looking at it in hindsight and in hindsight yeah it was a bad move, but look at it at that moment without the benefit of hindsight and, at the time, it was the best option they had.

It's easy to see 20/20 in hindsight

Because people keep bringing it back up and I point out that one guy is still here and the other is gone. Actually it's not people it's only Cak.

But you're right this is going nowhere and I will try to not take the bait next time. Truth is that it doesn't really matter and good times are ahead.

I blame them for making a bad decision by a supposed QB guru and offensive genius. Usually disastrous decisions like that lead to getting fired.

Although I hope if I screw up badly at work my boss accepts that I just took a swing and missed.

Many on here wanted them to trade up using whatever it took to get Goff (Me) Wentz (Texian) before the draft.

I hate this MB ran Texian off. He was really good to talk the draft with.

Well Rappaport/Glazer reported Ricky made that call.

You just dont want to believe 2 of the most well respected NFL reporters.

And that's OK. Your mind isn't going to be changed.

There was no way we could have made either of those trades without completely hamstringing our team, which would have hurt either young QBs development and quite possibly turned them into a bust. People still want to lament the fact that the Watson trade has hurt the depth on this team, and that was only an additional 1 and possibly a 2 if you are of the belief the Osweiler trade also contributed to getting him here. I mean look at how much the Rams and Eagles had to give up to get the 1 and 2 spot and they weren't nearly as far back as we were.

I advocated going after Prescott that year, was a QB we could reasonably attain in that draft, and I felt really good about him compared to the likes of Lynch, Cook, etc.

Oh yeah, forgot ob also picked osweiler over dak

They reported OBrien didn't like osweiler. Knowing OBrien, he didn't realize this until halfway through the season

I disagree, I believe that Osweiler was Rick Smith but I agree with Smith, I would have done the same thing. I do agree that Smith got Mallet and Hoyer because BoB wanted them and them being so bad is why I think Smith ignored BoB when it came to Osweiler.

Fair enough! That's quite possible

I'm sure he hated him in otas. The question is if he hated him at the time of signing.

Who knows, but I don't think he was really on board with the signing either. I don't know many coaches who would be on board with signing a QB to a huge contract when they have never had a meeting with the guy to learn his football acumen.

I agree but then we're talking about OBrien here. He saw mallet for years and said "yep, he's my starter"

To be fair Mallet would have been a great QB had he just learned to have a softer touch at times..........and spot receivers...........and watch for defenses...........and to be a mature adult...........and how to change the batteries in an alarm clock. Other than those minor flaws though he could have been a great QB.

So sold on Mallet that instead of trading a 3rd for him during the draft to get him before OTA's and TC he waited until after the preseason so we could get him for a conditional 6th, and then the next year brought in Hoyer to compete with him and chose Hoyer as his starting QB to begin the year... I really don;t think he was enamored with Mallet, probably was just a QB with the tools you want who knew his system that could be acquired cheaply

Then resigned him for another year and named him starter at some point the next year also. And got rid of Keenum to make room for him.

OMG they got rid of the goat Case freakin Keenum???? Just shut the team down right now

Yea they re-signed Mallet to a cheap prove it deal, not exactly indicative that OB was fully sold on him, and you are right he did pull Hoyer and started Mallet for a bit, then apologized to the team for the mistake he made with his judgement. Like how you are phrasing it makes it sound like he expected Mallet to be his next Brady, and how it actually played out proves quite different.

Keenum isn't great, but he's way better than Mallet. Not sure what's up with O'Briens talent evaluation skills.

O'Brien has made several of these judgment mistakes.

He was only going to carry 3 Qbs, Fitz was the 1 getting paid an declared starter, Savage was the newly drafted rookie, and Mallet was the guy that knew his system that had upside. If you're going to act like the Keenum today was the same QB as the Keenum in '14 you're crazy. Keenum was a BAD qb then, wasn't very good with the Rams, went and had 1 magical season with the Vikings then went back to being a bad qb. Let's not make this out to more than it really is, every coach wants a guy that knows his system pretty simple

I don't think Keenum is good, but Fitz+Keenum are much better than Hoyer + Mallet. If he can't even do the placeholder thing right then what can he do right?

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sp...-Bill-O-Brien-wastes-his-chances-13487739.php

The Texans had a three-point lead and with a touchdown drive could put the Eagles into a desperate double-digit deficit situation. Instead of attacking with a quickness, an almost standard coaching move on such a turnover, the Texans went conservative.

While the Eagles went for broke all day (4-for-4 on fourth down) trying to win the game, the Texans were trying not to lose the game. A game that the Texans knew could lead to their earning a first-round playoff bye for the first time in team history.

A dreadful rushing attack meant they would need to win the game through the air, but O'Brien tried to win the game on defense and field position. A game in which his secondary was so depleted that they had players on the field who were not in the NFL a few weeks ago.

In the end, the Texans put together a spirited comeback and took a lead with two touchdowns in the final five minutes, before the defense blew the game. That is because O'Brien finally cranked up the offense. When the Texans were desperate.

It took O'Brien too long to figure it out.
