Texans to hire Brian Cushing as Asst. Strengh and Conditioning Coach ... Seriously.

The old saying goes "Slow feet don't eat!"

Texans o-line all year:

He's basically an intern... some making it bigger than what it is

Then they should have named him a defensive QC assistant.

Naming him asst S/C coach, the Texans are either thumbing their noses at the NFL & it's policies, or they're as clueless as we think.

I'm praying for the former.

The Texans havent made an official announcement, so the team hasnt named him anything officially yet. It's been reported that he will help with the s/c and the defense but no official title has been handed down. Quite possibly a role to see which direction if any, he wants to go in.

Plus even if it is strictly S/C Cush knows a lot about nutrition and working out to maintain strength through out the season and through out injuries. Listen to him on Arians podcast, he is very passionate about it

That may very well be the case. But his history of alleged use is slap in the face worthy.

Word around the campfire is that he started juicing as soon as he stepped foot on the USC campus, and continued all the way through his NFL tenure.. he just happened to get caught a couple times.
Steroids not only give you the physical capabilities necessary to compete but also the mental attitude one needs to dominate the gridiron.
Personally.. I'd rather see everyone juiced to the gils (if they want to) and put on some truly miraculous games and feats of physical prowess.
Therefore.. who cares what he did and while it may be humorous given his new position.. you have to believe he probably knows what he's doing in the gym.. so, kudos.

That would lead to a Bodybuilding Competition type of move:

NFL: Athletes are all-natural.

XNFL: Extreme competition where the athletes are "max juiced". Less rules would be needed since the game could surely be extended due to penalties and ejections.

Wait, XNFL......XFL, my God man you have discovered Vinny Mac's plan for how to compete with the NFL.

"No, no congressman, its not actually football its football entertainment."

This is the worst suggestion ever. If you look at cycling, you had to be drugged off your face to even get on the tour in the 90s and 00s. It becomes a choice about whether to compete in the sport or not if PEDs are "optional".

As for the hire. I like it. Dude always kept in shape, made the most of what he had left for several years after a devastating injury. One of the longest tenured in team history. One club man. Getting in at a relatively low level to learn his new craft.

People love to hate on Cushing. I'm not a fan of the PED suspensions, and he was past his best for a significant portion of his career, but all things considered he was a great Texan who played his heart out.

I've been asked what kind of prescription drug(s) would Cushing possibly have been taking for the consequences of head injuries...........changes similar to those seen in dementia and Alzheimer's. Most likely an indirect stimulant such as Modafinil (Provigil).
According to Burke, many of the modafinil studies carried out in healthy participants found that the medication could boost energy, and participants reported less fatigue and better reaction time. A similar effect in people with dementia might help to improve social function and, by extension, brain health.

There are a host of other prescrption drugs on the NFL list of prohibited stimulants that are used to treat chronic post head trauma symptoms and dementia symptoms.

Brian Patrick Cushing (born January 24, 1987) is a former American football linebacker who is currently an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at USC, and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played for the Texans from 2009 to 2017 and became the team's all-time leading tackler.

Anybody got any idea what happened to Cushing after the Caserio coup ?
His wiki page still lists the strength coach position but he's nowhere to be found on the Texans website.

Seems so long ago we raged over drafting Cushing or Clay Matthew. How important was it really? What defines important anymore are but silly fantasy games.

I remember wanting RS to draft Cushing and trade back into the 1st for Matthews. What could've been.

Yep, Fantasy Football is killing the sport slowly.

What sucks is the players that made this sport great got played squat and the players of today ride their coattails to become instant millionaires. While the older players can’t walk or pay their medical bills.

The Earl Campbell era guys were well paid for that time.

But not paid the generational wealth guys are paid today.

Nope.
In 1981, the average NFL salary was 90K.

That's the equivalence of $272K today.

Today, the average NFL salary is nearly $2M.
That's more than 7 times than the Earl's era, inflation included.

In less than a decade, the NFL minimum salary contract is just a tad over a million a year. That means the minimum salaried player is being paid almost twice what they were just a few years ago. At some point in time, the minimum will have to bring down the maximum, meaning the very top high players will eventually get pushed aside except for the exceptional.

Or ticket prices go way up.
