I liked Gaine's draft a lot. Free agency not so much other than Honey Badger.

Hopefully he nails this offseason. We'll still be handcuffed with poor coaching IMO.

I'm not a big thread starter, but you should start up a thread that asks if fans think Gaine will nail this draft. I think after reasearching the talent he can find 4 solid contributors. Reid to Coutee type contributors. If this happens and they can find a couple of guys in FA then good time will be ahead.

Forget about Coaching for the offseason and lets take an in depth look at the draft.

Give us a few weeks to vent on coaching. It's months to the draft

If Gaine nails this offseason then this post could be wrong.

What Odds do you give Gaine to nail this offseason?

And someone needs to define exactly what "nailing the off-season" means.
I don't know if you guys noticed, but goalposts tend to move a lot around here...

Adding 4 Reid/ Coutee type contributors.

Regardless of position.

Re-sign/franchise Honey Badger, KJax & Clowney (trade an option) and get, draft or FA, 2 OL, 2 CBs, a 5' 10" 220 lb bulldog RB with vision & read OB the riot act on watching Pittsburgh & New England 24/7 until training camp.

powda, austins23 & I are working on Devlin.

Lmao. You saw my plan for Devlin. I'm arranging a tsunami for ob.

so if Gaine adds a couple of WRs and DBs that make a few plays, but ignores the O-line, you're giving him an "A" grade on the off-season?

While Coutee showed some promise from time-to-time, he had just 28 catches for 287 yds and 1 TD. That level of "contribution" should be easy to match. Until he shows he can play a full season Coutee is just another Will Fuller.

Now Reid, OTOH, was a true "contributor"; three INTs - one a pick-six - a FF, ten passes defensed.... I'd like four or five of these "contributors", thank you.

And at least two of them should be O-line guys.
Or for me the off-season is a :faildetector:.

Looked at as a season yes but that's cursory. Little dude (nickname for Sue) blew up 2 games for 110 yds. That talent level is not easily replaced. He's worth hoping this year was a fluke and bad judgment by the medical staff. He's like TY Hilton & Wes Welker had a love child.

Gaine could've had a couple more gold stars on last year's draft class resume, had OB utilized the Jordan's instead of running Griffin's arse out there every week. The Jordan's will be effective when finally given a chance to play consistently.

Okay, now that's a definition!

And if this secret Devlin plan involves moving him out of Houston, I want in!

Agreed, of course if they dont fix the OL then this offseason will be a fail for me because lord willing we will be sitting here having these same discussions this time next yr.

The all star games start next week. Followed by the combine. It's closer than you think, my guy who caters the crawfish boil called yesterday and confirmed for April 27th.

You don't do your own crawfish? Tsk, tsk.

Artichokes come out of crawfish boil fantastic by the way. So do asparagus & mushrooms. Just something to add on. You've got a big pot of flavor, why not use it?

Lol, wasn't watching and 1st boxer started lapping at the water coming off the cooked crawfish. Gets about 10 licks in, head comes up, runs over to the wife, knocks the beer out of her hand and starts drinking. "Honey, can you get him another beer and a bowl?"

People who come over can bring whatever they want and throw into the pot.

One of my 3 dogs always drinks beer with me. He's like will you get me another sir, Particularly during the crawfish boil. I think it's his favorite time of yr. You really should try to make it down to the livable forest.

I'm enjoying looking at this yrs OL class. It's much better than some are making it out to be.

halftime we were down 21-zip. Final score was 21-7.
The fact is that the defense woke up in the 2nd half and SHUT OUT Andrew Luck & Co.
Where were the halftime adjustments by the offense??
I think that's a little misleading. Whenever a team jumps out in front with a big lead the intensity level and play calling changes. If the Texans had scored more points, I think the Colts would have too. Early in the second half they were already more interested in protecting the lead and using clock than scoring points.

You can call me a dick in person. Knock it off here.

Ouch if they get a QB like Flacco, Wentz, Foles, 2 of which will be on the market.

Only if you promise to call me a dick.

Do you see Kubiak leaving his best friend Elway? I dont, I think he will continue in some type of advisory type role with the Broncos. If he turned down the Broncos OC position I cant see taking an OC position elsewhere.

Ok that is starting to sound weird.

He's gone from Denver. Elway denied several teams interviewing him obviously thinking Fangio would go "no problem." Elway got cornered when Kubiak & Fangio didn't get along. Now Kubiak is a free agent & he wants to non-HC again.

We'll see. Much rather it be Baltimore than the Jags. Preference would be Dallas but that won't happen.

O'Brien doesn't like change. Crime that our backup back was Blue. So much out there but BOB just doesn't realize what else is out there and won't risk making a change.
I think that is his philosophy with everything. Play calling, etc. Only go so far with him and we saw it this year.

Not liking change is an organizational issue. given the conservative nature (not referring to political) of Bob McNair, it is not surprising that he has hired and kept people who he is familiar, who in turn have hired and kept people with whom they are familiar, who hire and keep players with whom they are familiar, etc.

I don't get "just hire an OC and Bill O'Brien will be great!" ****. Isn't that what that loser George Godsey was?

I don't think that's a fair statement … that everyone will be happy if we "just hire and OC"

The issue is that we know OB's contract was recently extended and its highly unlikely that ownership eats that loss and fires his ass. Not after 11 wins and a playoff loss … at home.

We know we are stuck with OB for at least another year and probably more …

So really the best we can hope for is that they hire an OC which (hopefully) takes playcalling out of OB's hands as well as alters the playbook …. adding some more imaginative routes that scheme WR's open instead of relying upon Watson to play superman or DHop to catch everything in his radius no matter how contested to get a damn 1st down.

So what was that at the end of the Jags game? Or against Miami? Against Dallas?

If I remember correctly those were games where the offense was called "correctly." Lots of little things the defense had to consider creatively added to the offense from time to time utilizing our players according to their strengths.

What is frustrating to me is that we've seen O'b call the game like we believe the game should be called. But then he flips & goes back to lame.

I'm sure there is a good reason for his decision. But it's frustrating not being able to figure it out.

I think he relies on his 'game plan offense AND defense too much. Sometimes it works like the Miami game and sometimes out of desperation he turns Watson loose like the Dallas and Washington games. At the end of the season he relied on Watson a bit too much. What changed in/after the second Indy game to radically alter his mindset? Was it injury to Miller? His play-calling changed dramatically (or Watson took it on his own ). Last 3 games and playoff were not good games

I think that's a simple answer and a reoccurring theme since he's been here - Quality of opponent.

Look good against poor teams , look mediocre against the mediocre teams and piss poor against the good ones ….

And sometimes Watson just pulls his ass out of the fire.

His offense looked good against elite teams like the Patriots and Seahawks as well.

I just wish he would stick to one game plan. Master that one first.

We did last year. They beat us but Watson threw for over 400 yards and four TDs against what was then one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Yeah, but I thought the coversation was about the Texans recent failure of a season, not our 4-12 season when nothing went right other than getting Savage out of the lineup for a few games

Quality of opponent is the theme for ALL coaches lol & the game develops & is called according to who has the most matchups and talent in their favor...always has been. The great equalizer is usually the qb, not the HC.

Look at the games yesterday. The Colts looked nothing like the offensive juggernaut they’d been looking like against everyone else. Luck looked like HE was in his 1st playoff game.

So what is the most likely explanation for this? Reich all of a sudden forgot how to call plays? Luck all of a sudden forgot how to read defenses? Unlikely considering both were going against the 31st ranked defense. That game unfolded for the Colts almost identically to how our game against them did for pretty much the exact same reasons. They got down double digits early in the 1st qtr in the blink of an eye. Matchup wise, they couldn’t protect Luck all that well as the chiefs sacked him 3 times & pressured him a number of other times. Castonzo and Smith had a tough time holding up against Houston and Ford. Look on the other side as well. The abundance of weapons for KC ripped that defense to shreds b/c the Colts couldn’t match up w Kelce, Hill and Williams.

It’s not nearly as much X’s & O’s as ya’ll think it is.

Except if you were to give Andy Reid one offseason this team would improve immensely.
