I think the Texans under BOB feast on weak teams, are iffy against other mediocre teams, and get their butts kicked by good teams. A large part of the their record this year was the benefit of playing a schedule based on last year's record. During all of BOB's tenure, how many games have the Texans come out with a good gameplan, good execution, and then made good in-game adjustments (both sides of the ball)? After a miserable showing, like against the Colts, BOB always says, "Their coaches really had them coached well and ready to go... they had a great gameplan... we have to coach, plan and execute better..."? To date, oddly enough, only the special teams are performing at a high level (or at least a high level by Texans' standards).
So, how, when and where does better start? It must be a top secret plan that requires more than 5 yrs to begin.
I can't rule on Gaine's talent evaluation after only one, crippled draft (thanks RS). So the jury is out on him.
However, I think that the Gaines must immediately find a real OC with a creative mind that can utilize the offensive weapons and tell BOB he has the offense. I would advocate for a bright, young OC and turn him loose - modify, adapt, or dump BOB's dysfunctional playbook. Ideally, this person would be an offensively innovative coach from the college ranks, an NFL Asst. OC, or QB coach from a successful team. This rules out an in-house hire. The OC would call the plays and make the adjustments. If BOB does not like this, he can fire himself.
I would take a hard look at RAC as the DC, as well, and determine if I need to find an Asst. DC, or DC willing to come in and make changes that better utilize the talent. For those that defend RAC, ask yourself, "What would the Colts have done to the rest of the league if they had Watt, Clowney and Mercilus as parts of their defensive unit?"
I can't say that any of this will happen, but at least some has to happen or we are going to remain stuck in NFL Mediocre Hell as we continue on the path to be the Houston Bengals, the Houston Lions, or the Houston Jaguars...
