Robaire Smith

Doom Capers

Waterboy
What are we doing with Robaire? It says Peek and Babin will compete for right end and Weaver will be left end. What is Robaire doing? This guy is a hard worker and plays a lot harder than most of the people on defense. Any idea what we are doing with him?

As of now Robaire and Payne will be the starting DTs, presumably Peek and Weaver (if we actually signed him, which I've still yet to see confirmed other than a Chronicle article and a spinoff article on ESPN, but no mention on our website, on the feeder on ESPN, or the actual transaction pages on ESPN.com, NFL.com, or CNNSI.com) will start at DE with Babin getting some time off the bench too. If we're paying Weaver that much money (much more than he's worth) he's definitely going to be a starting DE, hopefully he's not really getting that much and they'll consider cutting Payne and moving Weaver inside to DT where he is a better fit rather than having a guy at DE that is a pretty good run stopper but basically a non-factor in the pass rush. Mario will likely excel in both run support and pass rush and I would easily take him at #1, but if we did sign WEaver for the reported amount it's looking less likely we go for Mario.

So we spent a high first round pick on Travis Johnson last year and he cant beat out Robair Smith or Seth Payne?

Yes, definitely one of the worst decisions by our former staff. He has done nothing to put himself in the starting lineup over Smith or Payne.

on pass rushing downs in the 4-3, he moves inside to DT because he can't really pressure the QB. This is what they did in Baltimore with him. He is a DE/DT even in the 4-3. Its not as obsurd as you make it out to be.

Yeah, thats why he has an amazing number of sacks in his 4 year career.....14.5.......

Your arguing against yourself now.

He moves to DT from DE so they can put a "Peek" kind of guy on the field. They know his obvious weakness and do not let it be exploited more than it needs to be.

If he put up 14.5 a year, he would stay at DE. Since he puts up 4.5 a year or so, he is considered a liability on passing downs.

Exactly what I was getting at. He might need to gain a little weight to be a full-time DT if that's what they plan on doing, but if he is really getting $26.5 million for 5 years I doubt they plan to have him play DT.

Peek is already going to start on the other side, with Babin coming off the bench.

If Weaver gets put in at DT, he will get put on his back faster than Paris Hilton infront of a video-camera....:shocked

I wouldnt garuntee that peek is going to start at DE yet. He still needs to gain some more weight

Right now, unless you have an insider, and judging by your comments you dont, its still a toss up for WDE.

Babin actually appears to be the front runner, not peek. Weaver is a big guy already, who is very good at stopping the run. He'd be a good 3-4 DE.

YTF usually I agree with you, but Peek is the front runner right now for WDE. He is penciled in right now, but Babin does have a shot. The LB coach and D-line coach are both fighting for Peek and it looks like the D-line coach is going to win this one.

come on now everything at this point is all speculation, i wouldnt gurantee anyone is gonna be starting, not until they prove something to the new coach, and they havent started yet.

Peek is OBVIOUSLY our WDE right now or we would not have given out that mid level tender. Robaire Smith will have to stop disappearing in games for long stretches for me to warm up to him. He will rise up vs the Titans and bat a few balls down but he will go for games without ever getting his name called.

Good stuff, Vinny......:ok:

Vinny in the titans 43 defense Robaire played quite well. Other than that I agree that he has to step up other than against Tennessee.

I lived in Nashville during this period (I followed the Oilers to Memphis then to Nashville physically - yes, I moved with the team) and I was one of the few who thought we overpaid for him after watching him up close. So far I've been right.

Ohh no doubt we overpaid for him. I agree totally. He had one good year and it was his contract year. Then we give him top dollar. If he gets the one gap duty he can be pretty effective though.

Hopefully. He is a big body and all but I don't see the elite fast-twitch gap penetrating 3 technique spurts you do. Hopefully he will play up to most of his contract here now that we are in a more traditional d...but if we are going to more of a cover 2 look we will not be blitzing as much so we need to get a good pass rush with our 4 lineman alone...and right now we really do not have one single proven pass rusher on the line at any of our positions. It's all on spec for next year...just like most of our team.
