Alliance of American Football (AAF)

OzzO

.. and then?
Never heard of it and apparently just had a QB draft.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...g-scott-tolzien-zach-mettenberger/2135490002/

Former NFL quarterbacks Christian Hackenberg, Scott Tolzien and Zach Mettenberger were among those selected in the Alliance of American Football's inaugural quarterback draft Tuesday night.

Hackenberg, who threw for more than 8,400 yards in three seasons at Penn State before the New York Jets selected him 51st overall in the 2016 draft, went to the Memphis Express, as did Mettenberger, who previously started 10 games for the Tennessee Titans. .....

Seems they gear up next year.

The Alliance of American Football (AAF) is a planned professional American football league founded by Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian. It is set to commence play in February 2019, one week following the National Football League's Super Bowl LIII championship game. The AAF consists of eight centrally owned and operated teams, all but one are located in cities on or south of the 35th parallel and all but one in metropolitan areas that have at least one major professional sports franchise.....

- Eastern Conf
Atlanta Legends
Birmingham Iron
Memphis Express
Orlando Apollos

- Western Conf
Arizona Hotshots
Salt Lake Stallions
San Antonio Commanders
San Diego Fleet

Tangent.... wikipedia notes a revived XFL will start in 2020

Spring league with a team in San Antonio, I'd watch a game or two of it. I doubt it'll be broadcast on any of the major broadcast channels though.

Many football fans will watch a game or so of it. Like they watch a game or so of every alternative league that tries to pop up, ever.

And then they go on about not caring about really, really poor football that they have to investment in otherwise, as always.

I hear they’re going to get rid of the kickoff and the PAT. I think I’ll watch at least one game, to see how that works out.

Is this going to be like American style rugby?

I'd watch Hack & Mettenberger play rugby.

I wonder if they reached out to Ryan Mallett.

The San Antonio Commanders uniform.

What I found interesting, is that Apollos and Stallions were 2 of the name finalists for what became the Texans. The Apollos have the Astros color scheme.

What if this would have been the NFL team in Houston? (I added the star, I thought it needed something :)) ...

The AAF will use the same eligibility rules as the NFL (3 years post HS). Link

Just saw Oliver Luck say that the XFL will not use the same eligibility rules. That could end up being a true developmental league for kids that don’t go or stay in college. It would make it more interesting considering you would be watching some players that would be true NFL prospects, not just players that aren’t good enough to play in the NFL.

I've missed the distraction of spring football. It usually never amounts to much, or ever lasts, but it's good to have a few games to watch in the spring. Even if it is minor league. Somewhere, in a box, I still have a few Gambler mementos, some unused tickets and a few game schedules. I used to have a Gamblers hat, I have no idea of what happened to it.

I'm pretty sure I'll get a Houston hat for the XFL team, if they have a cool name and logo.

Season starts Feb 9 and airs on CBS. Some additional info on notable players and coaches along with the schedule.....

Wow, I live in Florida and can't believe that I never heard that Steve Spurrier is coaching the Orlando team. I also can't believe that he took that gig. He had a cushy job just hanging out at the Swamp being an "ambassador and consultant" for the athletic program there. They must be paying him a lot of money. I also now understand the colors that Orlando team adopted. Orlando is all about the Gators.

The list there didn't have a QB for the San Antonio team, just two RBs. I wonder if the coach of this team is an OB fan. LOL

Marquise Williams
Logan Woodside

Both of them have at least seen the inside of an NFL training camp, but not for any length of time. It'a a minor league, so that's to be expected. And every team is an expansion team this year. LOL.

I'm already a San Antonio Commander fan, for however long they can hold my interest.

Interesting factoid about Mike Riley, the HC of the San Antonio team. He was the Chargers HC from 1999 to 2001, they never made the playoffs. He was the HC of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL before that and won a Grey Cup in 1990. At least this guy has actually taken a team all the way in the pros. Damn near 30 years ago, but still, he actually did it once.

From what I've read, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but CBS is only "broadcasting" one game the first week, and after that you have to have CBS Sports Access to watch the games. Which means you either need cable or a subscription to CBS All Access, neither of which I have or am going to get.

If I'm right, that's to bad. I was looking forward to watching a few games.

That is a bummer, I checked it out and it's $99 a year for a subscription, no way it's worth that. Will probably stream the games via reddit or something if I can.

CBSAA is $10 a month at Amazon (or $5 a month if you want to watch commercials). I might get it for one month just to check out the AAF and see if the 2nd season of Star Trek is any better than the first one.

They have some good coaches. Mike Martz is the coach of the San Diego team.

There will be one game televised each Saturday and Sunday on CBSSN. I have DirecTV so I get that channel as part of my service. This is being billed as a development league. I'll watch just to give me something to fill the time until next NFL season.

From your own 28? Must think your defense sucks

I mean generally if you're going for an onside kick, it's because you need to score again quickly and don't have enough time to waste with your defense being on the field. So if you don't get recover it the game is all but lost anyways.

I like the idea, my only issue with it is it would get rid of those random surprise onside kicks teams try like once every 4 years. Think Sean Payton's gutsy onside kick to open the 2nd half would have never happened with this rule

Yeah, call me a snob or whatever, but i'm not interested in watching reject NFL football players play. If the NFL gets that bad, I'll go watch the Sachatuwan roughriders..
