Our Biggest needs in order

Going into Free Agency and the Draft, does our front office know what our biggest need is ?

I hope they do, but, I see a lot of wholes, and I'm not sure the a RB with our 1st pick, is our top need. I'm sort of wondering if its the last position we need to worry about ?

Lets Break it down.

QB - Carr - so far looks like a Jake Plummer, but some critics say he'd be better with a good O-Line.....so its possible, although nothing screams SUPER BOWL leader.

RB - Davis - just missed having another 1000 yard season. Is great when he's healthy, gets dinged up though. Backup Morency - supposedly a runner with great vision, should be capable to step in for Davis when he's injured, if he can't then he was another one of the wasted picks last year.

WR - AJ - has potential to be top 3 WR, needs some other guys to step up so he doesn't face triple teams. So we need a 2nd WR, some say Gaffney, some say no. Do we have a 3rd WR ? Jerome Mathis might turn out to be a Santana Moss.....mainly a kick returner then slowly bloom into a great WR ? MAYBE......probably should've been given more of a shot last year at running some routes in games. At least we've got promise.

TE - Mark Bruener/Marcellus Rivers - Mark "Stone Hands/Feet" Bruener should beef up and fill one of our needs at OT or OG.....and Rivers looked decent as an all around TE, but probably can't stretch the seem on a regular basis. So a good TE would be much appreciated, especially when you consider what Kubiak's offence can do with a good TE. And lets not lean on Joppru to produce for us again this year.

O-LINE - Its pathetic...Don't get me wrong we have some decent lineman, they've just gotta figure out how many they have then get rid of the deadbeats...ALA Steve Mckinney and fill the holes. Its safe to say the team isn't going anywhere until this whole unit improves. at least 2 good lineman away from an OK offensive line.

Now D-fence

D-LINE - Was Travis Johnson really a 1st round talent ? Hopefully we find out this year. Can Babin holdup as DE in the NFL, we all hope so. Do we even have the personnel to go back to a 4-3 base defence ? There seem to be a lot of IFs here. But, it still doesn't look as bad on paper as our O-line does.

LBs - Is Wong done ? Are we going to have to put Greenwood in the middle ? is Peek our 3rd down DE or a strong side backer now ? Good thing Shantee Orr got a chance to show his stuff last year. Probably need at least one LB.

DBs - The young safeties look legit. They might not be standouts yet, but, are serviceable and way better than Matt Stevens ever was. Dunta Robinson is gold, no doubt. P-Buch is bronze at best, hopefully this coaching staff can light a fire under him every game or we're toast. Faggins is a decent nickelback. A replacement for P-Buch would be nice, but not sure they have the picks or Free Agent JAM to fill that need. Not sure if anyone in the front office wants to admit that they wasted a lot of last years picks on P-Bust.

So here's my final list in order of need.
1st - O-lineman
2nd - D-lineman
3rd - TE
4th - O-lineman
5th - LB
6th - WR - unless they finally start working with Mathis on receiving instead of just Kick Returning
7th - DB
8th - QB

Filling those top 6 needs with GOOD players is essential if they want to finally see what they have in David Carr. The only problem with this, I fear, is that Carr finally gets some help, but, might not be able to much of anything with it. So, bypassing 3 great QBs in this years draft might end up being the bigger mistake in the long run. Just my thoughts, what do you think?

And here's to Casserly not getting any say in whose drafted or brought in through free agency this year.

Marcellus Rivers looks like he has good speed. He has good athletic ability, as well. I would like to see how Kubiak uses him. He should become a safety valve for Carr.

I think you will see an improved offensive line based on the new blocking scheme. The Texans definitely need more linemen, but there should be a change in their success right away.

I'm just curious as to the formula you have that gives a RB the top answer to what we need most ?

You are 100% RB is not the teams biggest need, but playmaker is. Other than AJ the Texans don't have one playmaker on offense.

Bush helps you as a RB, slot WR and punt returner. Give D-cordinators fits trying to account for him AJ, and even DD at the same time.

O and he is good in blitz pick-up and pass protections, something Davis is terrible at

It's about getting the best player if you are drafting #1.

1. Rush End (DE)-Mario Williams
2. Durable Running Back-Reggie Bush
3. Left Tackle- FA
4. Safety- Chris Hope
5. OLB- LaVar Arrington

Spend the money I give for season tickets to bring these guys in!

Bush chews up yards, regardless of where he is. No, RB is not our top need but as others have said on many other threads, we need touch down makers. Only three exist in this draft. Young, LenDale White and Bush. No one ranks Young or White ahead of Bush except in Texas. When you have the potential of a Young or Bush, you have to take them unless presented with an awesome trade. Just a reminder, we have two picks in 3rd round.

LT
DE
CB
ILB
TE
G/C
S

LT- 1st or 2nd round

DE 1st or 3rd rd

CB 2nd or 3rd

ILB 3rd, 4th, or possible 2nd if we trade 4 picks

TE 3rd, 4th, 5th or 2nd w/ trade

G/C 4th or lower,

S late rd possible

Most everyone seems to agree with our basic needs & areas that need to be upgraded. this draft should be able to fill nearly 1/2 doz. needs if done well. there is only one LT & one DE that stand out who would fit our system, flip a coin one would help improve Carr the other the Texans pass rush, I might also add the Texans really need to stop the run which would be MLB and there is one of those who also stand out in this draft as well, but we can't get them all.

My best guess would be a trade down to address a couple of these needs.

1a. LT
2a. DE
2b. MLB
3a. OG
3b. CB
4. TE/FB
5. WR
6. SS
7. QB
2

The TrailBlazers passed on Michael Jordan because they didn't "need" a SG they needed a big man. Hello Sam Bowie, good bye greatest player ever.

Not saying Reggie is MJ, but you don't pass on a prospect that is this good. Espcially when is he something you need like a playmaker.

I'm not worried though, I think the guys that make the descions are gonna do the right thing and Draft Bush, unless someone gives us a godfather offer.

If we are just talking needs.. not players and where they will be available.. I figure it like this.

1. CB
2. DE
3. OG
4. TE
5. FS
6. OT
7. RB
8. WR
9. MLB
10. OLB

WHAT!!!

no, no, no...

it looks like this:
1. MLB
2. LT
3. SDE
4. FS
5. OG
6. TE
7. C
8. RB
9. OLB
10. WR

my top 10 needs with possible options for each position. Small analysis included.

1. MLB - Arrington, Brooks, McIntosh. Arrington is a stud that will show a commitment to bettering out LB's. Brooks is the best LB in the draft in terms of talent. He is the best MLB in the nation. McIntosh is an option if we don't go with the first two.
2. LT - D'brickashaw in the first, maybe a Jon Scott in the second, D. Colledge in the third. All are possible options, but FA LT's are not the answer. For evidence, see also: Victor Riley
3. SDE - Mario in the first, Kiwi in the second, Ray Edwards in the 4th. Abreham though FA. My favorite option is Mario or Edwards.
4. FS - Ko Simpson at #33, Chris Hope
5. OG - This will be a hard position to fill. Hopefully McKinny can slide over to LG. Maybe a Settersom in the 5th or maybe even a Spencer in the 4th.
6. TE - V. Davis in the first, M. Lewis/L. Pope in the second, Fasano in the third, Klopp in the fourth, Thomas in the fifth. The FA TE class does not offer a "complete" TE like our team needs.
7. C - Mangold in the second, Settersom in the 5th, Bently through FA. Bently is young and proven, and therefore likely out of our price range. Settersom has experience in the zone scheme, while Mangold is simply the best C in the last 8 years or so, who also happens to fit our scheme well.
8. RB - We ONLY need a big, bruiser type. We have DD, and a clone. Wells may walk, but he does not really excell at his short yardage job, and another option may be pursued.
9. OLB - This is a hard position to fill, but Hawk in the first or Arrington through FA. Arrington would probally be forced to play MLB for us, soley out of need. Orr will hopefully be able to start, while Peek will hopefully be released/traded.
10. WR - We have our stud, we have TWO solid posession guys. We have an ideal #2 reciever in Mathis, and we have an untapped CFL stud. We might look to bring an Antonio Bryant type through FA, but my personaly favorite who actually fits our budget: Charles Rogers. He has as much talent as AJ, and we will see it if he is able to stay healthy all year.

He is a RFA and the Lions are reportedly not going to match an offer.

Where do you get that from? He signed a 7 year contract in 2003 just like AJ. Here is a free agent list for the Lions without him on it--Link

I totally agree, that what we do in FA can relieve some pressure on what we do in the draft, allowing us the luxury of spoiling ourselves with some talent not desperately needed. Signing solid offensive guards, mean we can adress the Line with our high second..... I could see trading down to mid/late 1st round, if we also add some defensive talent, a pass rusher, or a solid run stopper, that will allow P. Buch to focus on his responsibilities.....

But I sure hope you guys are right about Carr....

What has Charles Rodgers done since he came into the league? The Texans should draft Bush if they want to win championships not just games. A playmaker with an It factor is needed to get to a championship level and win. Derek Jeter has the IT factor as does K. Bryant, Tom Brady, Shaq O'neal, Tim Duncan and Chauncey Billups.

Hmm...

Well, I was just regurgatating what I thought I read earlier in the offseason. I could have sworn he was getting released, or was a RFA. I thought I even saw it on a football main page.

I guess even the best of us can be wrong once in a while...:spy:

I seriously think we need a QB more than we need a RB, sooooo:

1. Matt Lienart/Vince Young
2-DE
3- OL
4-OG
5-Safety
6-OT

The Texans already filled their biggest NEED ..... That was the entire coaching staff . Now if only they would have sent Casserly packing as well ...:stirpot:

As for positions that need an upgrade (Not in order I would draft) I'd list them as Interior O-line top of the list , DE , CB , MLB , FS , WR (Bradford and Gaffney both FA's) and TE.

The Texans interior O-Line is probably the worst in the NFL .... McKinney is continually pushed back into the pocket (What there is of one) and is playing out of position , The guards Milford Brown and Fred Weary probably dont start for any other team .... decent depth but not starting calibur.

With the switch to the 4-3 defense the Texans have no true DE on the roster . As it stands right now we will likely see Peek and Babin battle it out for the weakside position .... Im not sure either of them are NFL quality DE's. With the impending release of G.Walker they have no one to man the strong side either ....

The D-backs outside of D-Rob arent stellar . Faggins is likely a nickle back on most teams (which he should be) , Burnt Toast ... Errr P-Burnt ... Err Phillup Buchannon should be used on special teams if that , the guy couldnt cover a baby with a blanket and couldnt tackle a cadaver .

The MLB position is also in question mainly because of K.Wongs injuries , otherwise he would get the nod there ....Wong has played MLB in a 4-3 in Minn. and played pretty well . I doubt he will be ready come opening day so this is a position of need as well.

Free Safety .... Gary ... errr Marcus Coleman , sorry I got confused there because of the comedy act he put on last season .... Coleman got his just reward with the roster cut .... CC.Brown did a decent job filling in as a rookie but along with G.Earl is much better suited to playing the Strong Safety position . I would not want to go an entire season with those two at the safety positions.

Bradford is likely gone (FINALLY) he shouldnt have been re-signed last season , Gaffeny is also a UFA . With two of their top three recievers likely to be gone this is almost a position of desperate need .There are some FA's out there to consider ....Troy Brown anyone ?

Then you have the TE position where we have seen the likes of Billy Miller (I like Billy ... see avatar) who could catch but couldnt block and M.Bruener who COULD block but just CANT CATCH . For the better part of four seasons every time one of the Texans TE's has gone on the field the defense has been able to predict what type of play was coming ....enough said ....

As for where I would draft them would depend a lot on what kind of value there is at each pick in the draft . I dont think there is any REAL value for the Texans picking #1 overall because the same players the Texans SHOULD be targeting are very likely to be there after the next two picks . The positions I think are the biggest need being tackle and center arent generally taken in the first round . Add to that the two players I think would have the biggest impact on the team dont really merit the #1 overall selection in V.Davis and M.Williams. They are first round talent to be sure .... but there are better players at higher priority positions who would/should go ahead of them if any other team was picking #1.

The problem here is the trade down options seem to be severly limited. That leaves looking at possible game breakers ... Bush ? Young ? at the #1 which pushes all the NEED positions down a round ... Its enough to drive us all nutz between now and draft day .

Best case for this team is to trade down to #4 and have the choice between D-Brick , M.Williams , AJ.Hawk and V.Davis ...Worst case would be to trade down to the point that all the top talent is gone and you get stuck with the second tier talent ..... Kinda like Casserly did last year when he got stuck with Travis Johnson. :brickwall

Just fact checking for myself. My top target would be Antonio Bryant but I certainly wouldn't mind an inexpensive scenario (certainly 2nd day if a pick involved) that would bring Rogers to Houston. Is he on his 2nd or 3rd strike for the banned substances program?

um...since when was Jerome Mathis as legit #2 WR?

I love him and think he can become that guy, but to say he is already is very homerish (and this is coming from me, who is a HUGE homer :homer: )

What we need is a playmaker, especially if we are in the AFC the stronger of the conferences.

It'd be nice to have someone who will allow our playmakers to do their job.. D'Brick..... will help give Carr/DD/Vince/Reggie time to do their thing. Mario will rush QBs into making quick/bad/ill-advised throws, P Buch will look like a shut down Corner, and Dunta can go to the pro-bowl. He'll also command Double teams, opening holes for Earl, Wong, Polk??, AJ...

Playmakers.......
