The Sporting News Mock

Intersting stuff. They have the Texans going Bush and then Orien Harris the DT from Miami, Rd 2. I just can't see that after last year. Especially since Lawson is shown going in the middle of this round along with Mercedes Lewis. They also have Brick going 3rd to the Titans and VY dropping all the way to 11th and the Rams. This may be one of the most random Mocks I have seen. I am a member so I can't get you into the link but the Top 13 are:

Charley Casserly says he is open for trade business, but it’s unlikely that any team will offer the booty required to get this valuable pick. So, that’ll leave the Texans to select the most versatile offensive threat in the draft and team him with Dominick Davis.

New coach Sean Payton wants a cerebral pocket passer, and Leinart is a proven winner with all the physical tools.

3 (3) Titans D'Brickashaw Ferguson T Va.
The Titans’ coaches worked with Ferguson at the Senior Bowl and believe he is the cornerstone to anchor their offensive line for at least the next decade.

4 (4) Jets A.J. Hawk OLB Ohio St.
New coach Eric Mangini prefers the 3-4 defensive scheme and needs a another playmaking outside linebacker to make the system flourish. Hawk is tough and smart and would be the perfect fit.

5 (5) Packers Mario Williams* DE NC State
The Packers need a dominant defensive end to line up opposite Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila to play the attacking style preferred by new coach Mike McCarthy.

6 (6) 49ers Jimmy Williams CB Va. Tech
Williams would fill a dire need for a team whose only above-average player in the secondary, Ahmed Plummer, was recently cut.

7 (7) Raiders Michael Huff S Texas
Huff had a tremendous senior season and has backed it up with a strong showing in postseason workouts. The Raiders have several pressing needs, but a versatile playmaker who can anchor the secondary is near the top of the list.

8 (8) Bills Haloti Ngata* DT Oregon
The Bills need a dominant run stuffer and inside penetrator to shore up their porous run defense.

9 (9) Lions Tye Hill CB Clemson
Tight end Vernon Davis would be quite tempting, but the Lions already have a lot of receiving threats and should address other needs. Hill could line up opposite Dre Bly to give the Lions two top-line cornerbacks.

10 (10) Cardinals Vernon Davis* TE Maryland
Davis is the best receiver in the ’06 draft and is a tight end. He shows good hands, the speed to stretch the field and would bring another dimension to an already potent passing attack.

11 (11) Rams Vince Young* QB Texas
New coach Scott Linehan was the offensive coordinator who oversaw the development of Daunte Culpepper in Minnesota and sees some common traits in Young. And Young would be under no pressure to play right away and could sit for a couple years behind Marc Bulger.

12 (12) Browns Chad Greenway OLB Iowa
Outside linebacker is the key position in coach Romeo Crennel's defense. Greenway is instinctive, aggressive and fast. He is strong against the run, can play in coverage and rush the passer.

White possesses the size and speed the Ravens need to re-establish their physical running

The Titans need a dominant player to anchor a young line, especially with the recent cut of left tackle Brad Hopkins. Winston, a former tight end, is extremely athletic and is on the rise after some strong postseason workouts.

8 (40) Lions Darryl Tapp DE Va. Tech
New coach Rod Marinelli loves to have depth at defensive end and would use Tapp as a pass-rush specialist while he develops his body to play every down.

Arizona must upgrade the cornerback spot opposite ’05 first-round pick Antrel Rolle. Phillips is smart and physical.

The Bills are expected to cut wide receiver Eric Moulds, and Hagan is a polished receiver who shows the speed and physical style to complement Lee Evans.

The Browns are trying to survive with veteran stop-gaps Cosey Coleman and Joe Andruzzi at guard. It's time to bring in some young blood.

12 (44) Ravens Johnathan Joseph* CB S. Carolina
The Ravens, with Deion Sanders' retirement and Dale Carter getting older, should add some young depth in the secondary. Joseph has excellent speed and good size.

13 (45) Eagles Brodrick Bunkley DT Florida St.
Bunkley is the attacking, one-gap style of tackle Eagles coaches prefer. Bunkley can rush the passer and stuff the run, and he showed amazing strength at the NFL Combine by bench-pressing 225 pounds an amazing 44 times.

The Rams will diversify their passing game under new coach Scott Linehan and need a tight end capable of making plays in the deep middle.

15 (47) Falcons Kamerion Wimbley DE Florida St.
Brady Smith could be a salary-cap casualty, and Wimbley could contribute as a rookie pass-rush specialist opposite Patrick Kearney.

If the Vikings cut veteran safety Corey Chavous, as anticipated, this would be a no-brainer of a pick.

Whitner shows great speed and range, which could free up Roy Williams to play closer to the line of scrimmage.

18 (50) Chargers Pat Watkins S Florida St.
The Chargers must upgrade their talent and depth in the secondary. Watkins has good size and excellent speed.

19 (51) Dolphins Alan Zemaitis CB Penn State
The Dolphins cut veteran Sam Madison, and Zemaitis would be a fine replacement. Zemaitis is a coach Nick Saban type of cornerback -- sound, tough and smart with good ball skills.

20 (52) Patriots Manny Lawson DE NC State
Lawson could play end in a 4-3 scheme but would be an outside linebacker in New England’s 3-4 defense.

The Titans may pass, but there is NO WAY Vince drops past Oakland, Detroit, and Arizona. I could even see NYJ taking him if TN takes D'Brick.

I also can't see us passing on Winston, Pope, or Marcedes in the 2nd.

ive been saying for a while that I see Vince Young dropping into the late top 10.. said it even before he the Wonderlic fiasco.

I could see him sliding to 11 easily.

No way VY drops to of all people the Rams. Bulger is their guy, and is still relatively young. And it was nice to see the moron who made this mock didn't address the Texans' o-line problems in the first two rounds. Nice, going on five years without noticing the main problem staring them right in the face.

This mock is terrible. Just about any of the mocks posted here in the mock draft section are better.

Sorry the link won't work because it is a TSN membership thing. I am on their NFL news and their fantasy site. I just thought it was a very "off" mock and have seen much better. Good for discussion though because I assumed people could see VY dropping...I'm not one of them. I did agree with the Packers pick though because all I'm ready lately is that they are enamored with the guy. I thought they could go O-line easily too.

This is the kind of draft that proves that all of us know just as much as these people do. There is no way in hell we take a DT in the 2nd...do these people not realize that we already have too many and too much money tied up into the ones we have?! Although......they may be taking into account that Casserly is still our GM...LOL.

Absolutely. We're going to pass on what could be a very good OT which was giftwrapped and handed to us first in the second round, to go after another DT. That sounds Texans-ish to me.

This is one of the worst mocks I've ever seen, and coming from a supposed "reputable" source it is impressively bad.

Nine teams have held pro day workouts. More than 100 scouts, coaches and personnel people representing all 32 NFL teams were in Miami on Saturday.


LSU defensive tackle Claude Wroten did not work out at the Combine and did not impress at the Tigers' pro day. In front of representatives from 25 teams, Wroten did 24 reps on the bench press, but then was unable to finish his 40, pulling up during the run. Maybe he should have worked out in Indy, huh?

Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle appears over the injury bug and is now the target of several teams looking for a developmental prospect as a future starter.

Georgia tight end Leonard Pope is starting to draw attention for something other than his 6-7 height. Pope had an excellent Combine and the athleticism he showed in combination with his height is intriguing. One coach said, "The target area he presents will make some average young starting quarterback a star." Imagine what a player like Pope could do for Rex Grossman in Chicago or David Carr in Houston.

Look for North Carolina State's Manny Lawson to go higher in the draft than expected, especially with so many teams switching to the 3-4 defense and desperately seeking outside linebackers who can rush the passer. The Browns, Patriots and Steelers are always seeking guys like Lawson.

Pittsburgh guard Charles Spencer is seeing an undercurrent of interest building. One offensive line coach said, "He's raw, but he's tough and strong. He plays a year at guard and moves out to left tackle after that."

I have a subscription to this site, too... and they've been terrible since it was first posted months ago. I don't see it getting better on any Tuesday until the end of April............

Their scouts are pretty good, though, and I saw the same thing printed on Pope.

I really believe that if we can trade down and get either Mario or D'Brick, then Pope would be an incredible pickup in the 2nd rnd. We know about his receiving skills from film, but blocking has always been a question for me...



Here's a little more from their Pope evaluation:

Blocking: Has great potential because of his size, strength and athleticism. Must add bulk to be effective. Gets to the linebacker level quickly. Has improved blocking in open field. Is powerful with good hands. When locked on, pushes defender out of plays.

Bottom line: Pope has ideal height and great speed for his size. He needs to bulk up for the NFL, but he has the body to handle the weight. A highly productive early-entry junior, Pope's all-around skills make him a late first-round or early second-round prospect.

Seems like an unlikely choice in rd. 2 but it does give pause for thought.

Kubiak/Casserly just may decide to address the defense in this draft.

Lots of posters calling for O linemen, but Kubiak may decide to use this year to accurately judge just what we presently have on our O line.

An equal amount of posters (me included) think the players on this team, especially the O line, have been severly under utilized.

To me it would make sense if we used this draft to address the needs to convert from the 3-4 to the 4-3.

Just thinking that Kubiak may choose to be absolutely sure what is broken before trying to fix it.

Either way, the Saints can get well in a hurry as they also could go directly for need and take NC State defensive end Mario Williams.

With the Saints getting Brees, offensive coordinator Norm Chow is doing the two-step in Nashville. His former prized pupil at USC just might land in the Titans' lap as Steve McNair's near-future replacement.

The Jets will be players in the Leinart trade sweepstakes. If they stay put, they will take Hawk as the much-desired athletic outside linebacker for coach Eric Mangini's 3-4 scheme.

The Buccaneers need a strong right tackle to better protect Chris Simms' blind side.

24 (24) Bengals Nick Mangold C Ohio St.
Rich Braham is nearing the end of his career. Mangold could take over as a young leading line-caller to help protect franchise quarterback Carson Palmer as he returns from a knee injury.

25 (25) Giants Gabe Watson DT Michigan
The Giants will show 4-3 and 3-4 fronts, and they are thin at tackle with the loss of Kendrick Clancy. While Watson is a character concern, he would be the best run-stuffer on the board here. The Giants can take him for his versatility, and defensive coordinator Tim Lewis would push him every day.

26 (26) Bears Max Jean-Gilles G Georgia
The Bears need a road grader to pave the way for Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. They also must better protect fragile quarterback Rex Grossman.

27 (27) Panthers Laurence Maroney* RB Minnesota
DeShaun Foster has been known to break down, so Maroney would bring need depth at his position.

28 (28) Jaguars Ashton Youboty* CB Ohio St.
Even with the signing of former Viking Brian Williams and the presence of Rashean Mathis, the Jags need defensive back help, especially in the high-flying Colts' division.

Reliable Rod Smith is getting closer to retirement and speedy deep threat Ashley Lelie has been inconsistent. Moss, brother of the Redskins' Santana, would give Jake Plummer a viable downfield threat, stretching the field and also fighting for the ball underneath.

The Colts must account for the loss of Edgerrin James here. Williams is a hard runner between the tackles and has a low center of gravity. He hits holes hard and can provide enough balance to complement their prolific passing attack.

Harris offers some explosive inside penetration, which would take big pressure off pass-rushing ends Grant Wistrom and Bryce Fisher.

32 (32) Steelers Antonio Cromartie* CB Florida St.
Last year, the team gambled by drafting an injured prospect in the first round -- tight end Heath Miller -- and the move proved to be genius. Cromartie missed the '05 season but ran well at the Combine. If he stays healthy, he could give the Steelers’ secondary the speed it lacks

Even if they take Alabama's DeMeco Ryans in Round 1, the Browns can take Lawson to stand up and play outside. He brings great size (6-5, 241) and blazing speed (4.43).
