Mario at #1 ?

texman8

Waterboy
Unless Bush blows the door open at his pro day; Mario Williams would be a great fit at #1. He's a athletic monster....fills a great need for our 4-3 defense. Pass Rush...Next coming of Reggie White?
D'Brick would be another good pick.Yeah, we could move Pitts to Guard. But we can get OL in later rounds ..2nd or 3rd.
Do we really think Peek and Babin are the answers at DE?
In this draft, Hall and Lawson are the only players that come close to Williams. They're more like tweeners, though. Williams is a 6-6,295 lbs,4.6 speedy freak.

Best case scenario,we trade down ;we can get him and extra picks.

I'd take him even if we can't trade down.

no way do you pick this guy at the 1 spot...would never happen...most likely scenario would be in a trade down and a pick up of a few extra picks.

id trade down with either the Titans or Jets.. take whatever they would offer..even if it was just a 4th rounder.. and then take Williams.

Course... if Bush doesnt blow people away at his pro day.. it could change the whole top 5 anyway..and we may HAVE to take Mario #1 if we want to guarantee getting him.

This is an option far too few contemplate IMO. IMO there are serious questions about Bush, Leinart, Young, Cutler but 3 of them will almost certainly be the top 3 picks. Seems perfectly reasonable IMO for the Texans to drop down to get a phenominal "safe" pick and to save a tremendous amount of money in the process. The other option I believe was pulled off one time by the hated Cowboys--they went to a player not deemed worthy of #1 overall and got him to pre-agree to take a lessor salary even though they would draft him #1--at a minimum save the money.

Titans or Jets will not accept the trade!!!

Is there any reason they would?

Titans might accept if they are obsessed with Matt Leinheart.

But I think it is obvious that Jets won't accept the trade. One of the three quaterbacks(Leinheart, Young, Cutler) will fall anyways and even if they don't they could still draft Ferguson. And Jets have a lot of holes to fill, so they need their 2nd Round Pick. The only team I think will accept the trade is Oakland Raiders. But I don't think anyone wants to do that.

Trade down will be the best for us if it is POSSIBLE, but I don't think it is possible.

Draft Vince or Reggie

Fergueson will not last past 4, and very unlikely that he last past #3 overall. We are less likely to get our target if we don't take him #1 overall. D'brick will not be there as long as Mario will be.

So what? I didn't actually specify how far to trade down, but the difference between Ferguson and Williams is not worth taking either one at #1 in order to insure we don't miss on either at #4 for instance.

I have been thinking along these same lines.
It would most likely upset the general public, but if it comes down to the draft, and no blockbuster trade is offered us, give up the #1 for the #3 or #4 plus another first day pick (even a 3rd or 4th) and get our pick from DBrick or Mario and see a real $ savings on the contract.

I can't see using the #1 on OT, DE, with Vince & Reggie sitting there....... I do think the Texans can(and only the Texans) can get away with drafting a guy like D'Brick with the #1 overall...... any other team, or any other player other than Vince or Reggie, and everyone will be thinking WTF........

Personally, I'd love to drop to #4, get Vince, then go OLine, with our two early seconds..... if we get another 1st in our trade down, I'd take a pass rusher.

Anyone out there remember the 1985 draft? Buffalo had the first pick and received a lot of public pressure to take Flutie (who was coming off a great career at Boston College). They went with Bruce Smith instead. Hard to argue with that DE at #1....

Thinking outside the box is a good thing. Our need is OL and DE, not RB and QB. If we can't get a trade we take the best available player at our need. "Reaching," and I use that word very cautiously, a couple of positions to take Williams is not as ridiculous as some want to make it. There will be a high base associated with the #1, but the bonuses would not be as large as a RB or QB.

You're right...... RB & QB are not immediate needs.... and it's hard to justify using a #1 overall for either.
